Carol Dean Landis Hughes, daughter Walter Ewing Landis and Ada Lois Craft, married Milford LeVene Hughes and will be buried in Elmwod Memorial Park Cemetery, Abilene, Taylor County, Texas on October 1, 2016.  Visitation from 11:00 - 1:00, services at 1:00 and burial thereafter.

Carol Dean Hughes, 80, quietly passed away on Monday, September 26, 2016.

Carol was born on April 30, 1936 in Ft. Worth, Texas to parents Lois and Walter E. Landis. After graduating from North Side High School in Ft. Worth, Carol married her high school sweetheart, LeVene Hughes, in 1955.

Carol, LeVene, and their young and growing family lived in several Texas and Southern California communities before finally settling in Abilene, Texas in 1974. Carol was blessed with three children, four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Having graduated from McMurry College in Abilene, Carol spent many happy years teaching at Jim Ned High School in Tuscola, Texas. She was involved in many student organizations at Jim Ned, sponsoring the student council, the PALS program and even chaperoning class trips. After retirement, Carol volunteered at the Medical Mission in Abilene. She was an active member of St. Paul Methodist Church. She also became a Master Gardener and loved spending time tending her roses.

Preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

Carol is survived by her daughter, Leah Hughes of Abilene; daughter, Marci Nelson and husband Miles of Midland; son, Blake Hughes of Midland; grandchildren, Erin Blair and husband Drew; Rachel Nelson; Miriam Eltis and husband Drew, and Sam Nelson; great grandchildren Isaac and Brayden; her favorite brother, Walter Landis, Jr. and wife Nancy of Falls Church, Virginia and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM at Elmwood Funeral Home at 5750 Hwy 277 South in Abilene, Texas on Saturday, October 1, 2016. There will be a chapel service at 1:00 PM led by Pastor Felicia Hopkins of St Paul Methodist Church, followed by interment at Elmwood Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Aphasia Center of West Texas, 5214 Thomason Drive, Midland, TX 79703 or a charity of the giver's choosing.

Carol's family wishes to express thanks and gratitude to the kind and gentle staff at Scharbauer Cottage/Manor Park for taking such wonderful care of her and also to Home Hospice for their aid in providing comfort to Carol and her family. Love and thanks go out to Karen Vick, who was a loyal and devoted friend always.
