Virgil Steve Vaughn, son of Virgil Roy 'Runt' Vaughn and Billie Eva Sue Stevens and buried in Texas State Veterans Cemetery, Abilene, Taylor County, Texas.


Virgil Steve Vaughn passed away Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2013, at the age of 64. Celebration of life: First service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Jan. 3, in the Texas State Veterans Cemetery, Abilene. Another service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, at Celebration Community Church, Fort Worth.

Steve was born Nov. 28, 1949, to Virgil Roy and Sue Vaughn in Abilene. He proudly served our country by enlisting in the U.S. Air Force.

Steve began his career as an LVN at John Peter Smith Hospital in the ER, later earning his RN. The largest portion of Steve's career was spent as a licensed nursing facility administrator after earning his bachelor of arts in hospital administration. He spent over 40 years in health care. He was past president of the TGRA and was also co-founder of the ICOA Chapter of Austin. Steve is loved, admired and respected by many and will be dearly missed by everyone who knew him.

Steve was preceded in death by his father, Virgil Roy Vaughn, and life partner, Tony Dunlap. Survivors: Mother, Sue Vaughn of Abilene; sister, Sherry Gowin and husband, Bob, of Abilene; sister, Judy Blackwell and husband, Larry, of Archer, Fla.; brother, Terry Vaughn and wife, Penny, of Merkel; nieces, Misty Braly and husband, Russell, Lacy Gowin and Shelley Scott and husband, Brandon; nephews, Scott Blackwell and wife, Lisa, Ricky Vaughn and Chad Blackwell and wife, Jodie; five great-nieces; a great-nephew; and many friends.
