Clovis Woodroe Griffing, son of Norris Alexander Griffing and Denara Elizabeth Baker, married to Floy Elizabeth Norris and buried in Elmwood Memorial Park Cemetery, Abilene, Taylor County, Texas.

The Rev. Clovis Griffing, 83, died Thursday, September 23, 1999, in a local nursing home.

Services will be Monday at 3 p.m. at Wylie Baptist Church with Dr. Ed Jackson officiating, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home 5701 U.S. Hwy 277 South. Burial will be in Elmwood Memorial Park.

The Rev. Griffing was born in Hill County in 1916 and moved to Abilene from Lawn in 1940. He married Floy Norris in Tuscola in 1937. He was a Baptist minister and a member of Wylie Baptist Church. He served as president of the Westgate Lions Club from 1964-65 and was a member of South Taylor County Lions Club. He was pastor and founder of Lakeview Baptist Church and Westside Baptist Church of Abilene; and pastor of Wilmeth Baptist Church and Bradshaw Baptist Church. He also served as past president of the Ovalo Homecoming Association and retired from Montgomery Ward. He was a U.S. Army veteran.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Olen Griffing of Grand Prairie; a daughter, Linda Cook of Los Alamos, N.M.; two brothers, N.A. Griffing, Jr., of Austin and Eugene Griffing of Brownfield; three sisters, Opal Middlebrook of Shady Point, Okla., Eloise Adkison of Fort Worth and Ruth Hinds of Littlefield; five grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
