Mac, son of Elmo Stephen Jones and Ruby May Edwards and buried in Tuscola Cemetery, Tuscola, Taylor County, Texas.


Two Sisters, Two Tuscola Men Victims

Four persons were killed and two others were seiously injured in a head-on highway collision of two automobiles on the Tuscola highway, nine and a half miles south of Abilene, at 4:30 yesterday afternoon.

Killed instantly were:

Mac Jones, 22, of Tuscola, riding in a 1939 Nash sedan owned and driven by Mike Kelly, 29, Tuscola grocer;

Mrs. Ike Judkins, 59, of Dunn, riding in a 1941 five-passanger Chevrolet coupe driven by her brother, F.I. Garrett, Bishop farmer.

Injured fatally were Kelly and Mrs. Thomas A. McGee 61, 758 Palm, wife of the McGee Candy company proprieter, and sister of Mrs. Judkins.

Mrs. McGee died at Hendrick Memorial hospital at 7:50, and Kelly died at 10 last night at the hospital here.

The bodies of all except Jones were at the Laughter funeral home, pending completion of arrangements for services, Jenkins-Hodge funeral home at Tuscola was in charge of arrangements for the Jones funeral.

Injured are Garrett, 50 years old, and Mrs. Garrett, 49.

Mrs. Judkins and Mrs. McGee were riding in the car with their brother, F.I. Garrett, and Mrs. Garrett, and were travelling north when the car collided with the Nash driven by Kelly, who was traveling south.

ACCIDENT WITNESSES

Mrs. J.H. Childs and Fred Essary, both of 1815 West Avenue N, San Angelo, traveling closely behind the Garrett car, told state highway Patrolmen Paul Oder and M.L. Glasscock, who investigated the accident, the Kelly car seemed out of control and was on the left side of the road when the cars collided.

The injured were brought in Laughter and Elliott ambulances to the Hendrick Memorial hosptial here for treatment, and the Jenkins-Hodge funeral home at Tuscola made first arrangements following death of Mrs. Judkins and Jones.

In the collision, a tombstone in a trailer behind the Garrett car, weighing an estimated 300 pounds, was thrown over both cars and onto the highway 50 feet to the south.

STONE FOR FATHER'S GRAVE

Garrett, Mrs. McGee and Mrs. Judkins were brother and sisters, and the stone had marked the grave of their father, who died in 1901, and is buried at Wingate, members of the family said.  A new marker had just been installed, and they were returning from Wingate, bringing the former marker with them.

At the hospital last night, Kelly, operator of a Tuscola grocery, was given a blood transfusion.  Mrs. McGee received fractures of both legs and perhaps a broken arm, first examiniation showed.

Mrs. Garrett was unconscious for some hours after the accident, and was termed more severely injured than her husband, who was conscious but could not immidiately give a full account of it.

JONES A&M GRADUTE

Mac Jones is the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmo Jones of Tuscola and pioneer ranchers of the sector.  He was born Feb 15, 1919, and was graduated from Tuscola high school in 1937.

Jones was graduated from Texas A&M college last spring and turned down several jobs in the agricultural field to become associated with his father in the ranching business.  He has started a herd of registerd Herefords.

As a student at Tuscola high school, Jones made an outstanding record as a FFA boy and was the first boy in that school's history to win the Lone Star Farmer degree.

He is survived by his parents and three sisters, Mrs. Fred Allyn of Roby, Claire Jones, a junior at McMurry, and Maddie, Tuscola high school student.  He is a grandson of Mrs. C.C. Edwards, pioneer Abilenian, and of the late Ben F. Jones of Tuscola.

Funeral services for Mac Jones will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at the Presbyterian church in Tuscola.  The rites will be conducted by the Rev. J.W. Joiner, assisted by the Rev. W.I. Taylor and the Rev. Roscoe Trostle.

Pallbearers will be Boles Fry, H.B. Williams Jr., Rex Dillard, Jr. Doyle Taylor, Lloyd Stephenson, W.G. Marshall, Jr., T.A. Kirby, Jr. Frank Latta, Bobby Sayles, Burial will be directed by Jenkins-Hodge funeral home of Tuscola and Laughter's of Abilene.

Mike Kelly, son of Mr. and Mrs. James B. Kelly, son of Mr. and Mrs. James B. Kelly, of Tuscola, came there several years ago with members of his family from Beggs, Okla.  He operated the C.V. Morris grocery with his brother-in-law who owned stores at Tuscola and Snyder.  Mrs. Morris, of Snyder, is his sister, and there are other brothers and sisters, living at Beggs.

Mrs. McGee, the former Cora Garrett, was born in Kentucky, on Mar 16, 1880, and was the daughter of W.G. and Ellen Garrett.  Coming to Texas, the family first resided at Greenville.

WED 40 YEARS

Mr. and Mrs. McGee were married 40 years ago, on Jan 5, 1902, and there are five children.  Mrs. J.F. (Beatrice) Cherry, Dallas; J.A. McGee, Dallas; George L. McGee, Monahans; Mrs. Fred D. (Gustell) Miller, Lubbock and Noble McGee, Abilene.

Brothers and sisters include T.B. Garrett, Bakersfield, Calif.; Frank Garrett, Bishop; Mrs. Nora Forbus, Waco, and Robert Garrett of California, Mrs. McGee membership in the Loraine church of Christ, her husband said.

Surviving Mrs. Judkins, in addition to her husband, are two sons in the service, Price Jarrald, newly enlisted in the army, and Clinton Judkins, in the navy at Honolulu, and two other sons, Straigther Jarrald, Houston, and Garrett Judkins, in Louisiana.

Funerals Held for Mac Jones and Mike M. Kelly

Funeral services were held on las Friday and Sunday afternoons for Mac Jones, 22, and Mike Kelly, 29, victims of an automobile wreck on Jan. 29th, wich snuffed out four lives and seriously injured two more.  The other persons killed were Mrs. T.A. McGee, Abilene, and Mrs. Ike Judkins of Dunn; seriously injured were Mr. and Mrs. F.I. Garrett of Bishop.

Mack Jones, only son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmo Jones of Tuscola, was buried Friday afternoon at 3 o'clock in Tuscola cemetery under the direction of Jenkins & Hodge.

The services were held from the Presbyterian church of which he was a member, with Rev. J.W. Joiner, a former paster, officiating, assisted by Revs. W.I. Taylor and R.D. Trostle, local Baptist and Methodist pastors.

Medames H.J. and Henry K. Bass of Abilene rendered a vocal duet a request of the family.

Active pallbearers were Doyle Taylor, Rex Dillard, Jr., Bobby Sayles, Frank Latta, Boles Fry, Lloyd Stephenson, W.L. Marshall, Jr., Elmer Watson.

Mac was born Feb. 15, 1919, and was graduated from the Tuscola high school in 1937, he was also a graduate of A. & M. College, haveing finished last spring.  On returning home he was associated with his father in the raising of registered Hereford cattle.  He was a member of the Tuscola Chapter Future Farmers; and had the honor of being the first Tuscola boy to win the Lone Star Farmer degree.

He is survived by his parents and three sister, Mrs. Fred Allyn of Roby, Claire and Maddie Jones of Tuscola.
