Mary Kathryn Brown McCombs, daughter of Caleb Steven Brown and Jennie Belle Aycock, married to Darlus Bee McCombs and buried in Memory Gardens Cemetery, Victoria, Victoria County, Texas.


VICTORIA - Mary Kathryn Brown McCombs, 96 went to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, July 30, 2012. Kathryn was born to the late Caleb Steve Brown and Jenniebelle Aycock Brown on July 12, 1916 in Content, Texas.

Kathryn married her high school sweetheart Darlus Bee "D.B." McCombs on December 12, 1935 in Fort Worth, Texas. She received her B.S. degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Library Science, Art and Social Studies. Kathryn started working as a librarian at Shields Elementary School and then moved to Victoria High School. She was employed for 21 years with the Victoria Independent School District, retiring in 1983. While at Victoria High, she helped develop the Learning Resource Center, which turned the library into a curriculum oriented program that serves all phases of education. The success of this program led Kathryn to serve as a consultant to other districts to help them develop similar programs.

In addition to her parents, Kathryn was preceded in death by her husband, D.B. McCombs; son, James Robert McCombs; brother, Caleb Brown, Jr.; and sister, Zuma Brown. She is survived by her beloved grandchildren, a great grandchild and several nieces and nephews.

Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from four until six in the afternoon on Wednesday, August 1, 2012, in the chapel of the Grace Funeral Home, 2401 Houston Hwy., Victoria, Texas 77901. Funeral services will be held at ten in the morning on Thursday, August 2, 2012, at Northside Baptist Church, 4100 North Laurent, Victoria, Texas 77901, with interment to follow at Memory Gardens, Victoria.

Serving as pallbearers are Thomas Johnson, Dr. John Starkey, Dr. Jim Lueders, Tommy Barnes, Robert Tripson, David Ham and Steve Brown. Serving as honorary pallbearers are Dr. B.T. Johnson, Greg Knabe, and Dr. Bruce Bauknight.

Kathryn was able to live her life on her terms through the support of incredible friends and caregivers. The family would like to thank the entire Dr. B.T. Johnson family, Peggy Berry and Josie Garza for their lifelong friendship and care of Kathryn. Her wonderful team of caregivers gave Kathryn dignity and comfort throughout her life. Words cannot adequately express our thanks. The family would also like to thank the Northside Baptist Church family for their ministry, support and continued prayers.
