Bert Young, 86, passed away Thursday, October 22, 2009 in Abilene. His funeral will be at 2:00 PM on Saturday, October, 24, 2009 in the Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel, 5750 Hwy 277 South, officiated by Reverends Jack Ridlehoover and Paige Baize. Interment will follow the service at Elmwood Memorial Park, Garden of Hope with Military Honors.

Bert was born October 22, 1923 in Taylor County to Sid and Betty Young. He graduated from Jim Ned High School, and volunteered to serve his country during World War II in the United States Navy. Shortly after the end of the war he returned to the Abilene area and married Floy Gooch on February 17, 1951 in Rule, TX. After marriage they settled near the family homestead to continue the tradition of ranching. Bert was a charter member of the ECCA Volunteer Fire Department and was an Honorary Deputy for Taylor County under Sheriff George Maxwell. He served as a volunteer for the Taylor County Stock Show for many years and was a member of both the Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers Association and Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association. He was also a member of Elm Valley Community Church.

Bert is survived by his sons, Gary Young and wife Janel of Elm Valley and Lowell Young and wife Johnna of Elm Valley; grandchildren, G. Bert Young and wife Amber, Traci King and husband James, Christopher Bert Young, Jessica Young, Shantel Young, and Tori Lackey and husband Brady; great-grandchildren, Ayden, Elaina, Rhion, Madalynn, Caleb, and Gunner.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Floy; seven siblings; and granddaughter, Krystal Young.

Pallbearers for the service will be; Bob Collins, Barry McCollum, Donnie Nelson, Jamie Smith, Danny Nelson, and Cody White.

Honorary Pallbearers will be; Oscar White, George Maxwell, Delbert Hall, Jim Graham, Joe Graham, Don Vickery, and Norm McVey
