Orla Mae 'Dimples' Johnson Hughes

Orla Mae 'Dimples', daughter of Taylor J. Johnson and Mae Barnard, married Charlie James Hughes and buried in Garden Park Cemetery, Conroe, Montgomery County, Texas.


 After 94 years, Orla Mae Hughes left this life for her new one on September 18, 2014. She entered this world as the daughter of Mae and Taylor Johnson on August 14, 1920 in Ovalo, TX. She met the love of her life, Charlie J. Hughes, on a blind date in Winters, Texas. Married on December 5, 1939, they traveled the US during World War II, spending time in Arizona, Oregon, and Pennsylvania. Settling in Canyon, Texas, they raised their three children.

Orla worked as a secretary for the Principal of Canyon High School and spent time as a secretary at West Texas State University. She spent her later work years at Pantex in Amarillo. Always quick with a ready smile, she was affectionally known as "Dimples" or "Dimps" to her friends and family. She loved and adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. After retirement, Orla and Charlie moved to April Sound on Lake Conroe. They spent time as active members of April Sound Church, enjoying their friends. They delighted in spending time with the grandchildren whether on trips or Thanksgivings at the beach. She loved to cook and many good things came out of her kitchen, not the least of which was her lasagna and strawberry pie. She also kept a great supply of snacks in her pantry. She cherished the bear hugs from the grands and great- grands.

Orla Mae (Mamma) was greatly loved and will be greatly missed and is survived by her children, Ron Hughes of Arlington; Neal Hughes of Montgomery; Lynda and husband Bob Sasser of Conroe; grandchildren, Alyson Hughes of Richardson; Erik and wife Ananda Hughes of Kiel, Wis.; Brian and wife, Heather Sasser of Houston; Kim and husband Tom Hayden of Nashville, TN; Ronnie Hughes of Montgomery; Tai Hughes of Conroe and Her nine great-grandchildren will miss her ready smile and sweet spirit.

Funeral services will be held Monday September 22nd, 2014 at 10:00am at Cashner Funeral Home and Cemetery located at 801 Teas Rd. Conroe, Texas 77303 in Cashner Colonial Chapel. The family welcomes all her many friends to join them at visitation at 9am prior to service in Cashner Colonial Chapel. The family wishes to express our heartfelt gratitude to all of the caregivers at Village Green Alzheimer's Home for their caring and compassion.
