TUSCOLA – Robert Ivan "Bob" Self, loving father, brother and uncle, died Monday, April 19, 2004, at Hendricks Hospice Care Facility in Abilene following a three-year struggle with leukemia. Services will be 2:00 p.m. today in First United Methodist Church with the Reverends John Hogan and Bill Alexander officiating. Burial will be in Tuscola Cemetery, directed by Fry-Bartlett Funeral Home.

Bob was born in Abilene, February 8, 1944, to Lois and Price Self and celebrated his 60th birthday this year.

He graduated from Jim Ned High School and attended Howard County Jr. College. After serving two tours of duty in the Navy during the Viet Nam conflict, he worked as a credit manager for Snap-On Tools in Dallas, retiring to the Abilene area in 1988. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Tuscola.

Preceding him in death were his parents, his older brother Bill Self, and a niece, Gretchen Self.

A colorful and charismatic figure, Bob will be missed by many. His original sense of humor and mischievous nature brought delight and laughter to legions of friends and relatives. Ever courageous in the face of mounting health problems, Bob remained endearing and entertaining until the end.

Bob was the adoring father of one son, Rhett Self of Austin. Also surviving him are two sisters, Lesa Schulze of San Saba and JoAnna Garza of San Antonio; four nephews, Sam Self and Jammy Morton of Hurst, and Willie and Payton Self of Dallas; six nieces, Corrie Schulze of Waco, Mindy Cantu of San Saba, Alicia and Elizabeth Garza of San Antonio, Melody Arnold of Hobbs and Allison Kurek of Winnie; two aunts, Lola Maxwell and husband George of Abilene and Billie Wilson of Gig Harbor, Washington; and several great nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family feels special gratitude to Dr. Anton Melnyk and staff of the Abilene Cancer Clinic, the stem-cell transplant team of Methodist Hospital in San Antonio and to Hendrick Hospice Care for the compassion and kindness shown to Bob and the family during his illness.

Memorials may be made to Tuscola Cemetery Association, P. O. Box 293, Tuscola, Texas 79562.
