Midland, Texas - Rev. Melvin Roy Mathis, 87, of Midland passed away Monday, March 10, 2008. He was born November 17, 1920 in Crews to Iva Rhetta Woods Mathis and William Cornelius Mathis. He grew up in Crews and graduated from high school there. He attended McMurry College and graduated in 1943 with his Bachelors Degree. He married Eunice Robinson on May 31, 1944 in Quail, Texas. He received his Masters in Education from Hardin Simmons University in 1950. He served in the ministry in the North West Texas Conference, the New Mexico Conference, and the South Central Conference. He taught history at Odessa College for a number of years. Melvin and his wife retired to Winters in 1993 and moved to Midland in 2000.

Melvin is survived by his wife, Eunice, of 63 years; 3 children: Jean Alvey and husband Larry of Midland, Brenda Wilson and husband Kregg of Bovina, and Mary Mathis of Bethlehem, PA; 5 grandchildren: Kendra Parsons and husband Tim of Los Angeles, CA, Crystal Bingham and husband Shane of North Richland Hills, Chris Wilson and wife Miriam of Seattle, WA, Kody Wilson of Seattle, WA, and Mandy Rosas and husband Brian of League City; and 4 great-grandchildren: Logan and Jayce Bingham of North Richland Hills and Benjamin and Chloe Rosas of League City. Melvin is also survived by his twin brother Elvin Mathis of Abilene and brother Bill Mathis of The Woodlands, TX. Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Claude Mathis of Florida and his sister Margurite Mathis of Winters.

The family will receive friends at the Winters Funeral Home at 7:00 PM, Thursday, March 13, 2008. In celebration of his life, funeral services will be held Friday, March 14, 2008, at 10:30 AM at the Winters Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Joe Chamness officiating. Burial will follow at the Crews Cemetery under the direction of the Winters Funeral Home.
