Seleta Bernice Askew Gladden

(February 23, 1920 ~ March 14, 2009)

Seleta, daughter of Mitchell Thomas Askew and Clora Leaze Haynie, married Calvin Eugene Gladden and buried in Elmwood Memorial Park Cemetery, Abilene, Taylor County, Texas.


Seleta Gladden, 89, passed away Saturday, March 14, 2009 in Abilene.

Her funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 17, 2009 in the Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by Ryan Prater, the spouse of her granddaughter, Kara. Visitation will be 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Monday, March 16, 2009 at Elmwood Funeral Home 5750 Hwy 277 South. Interment will follow the service at Elmwood Memorial Park.

Seleta was born February 23, 1920 in Lubbock, TX to Mitch and Clora Askew. When she was thirteen the family moved to South Taylor County, where she graduated from Ovalo High School. She attended Blinn Business College in Brenham, TX and moved to Abilene in 1939. Seleta retired from Scarborough Black Tarpley & Scarborough in 1986 where she became active in Taylor County Legal Secretaries. Before joining Humana Seniors Insurance Department, she volunteered for them.

Seleta and C. E. Gladden had four children who survive her; Sherry Brinlee and husband Toby of Colleyville, Texas, Randy Gladden of San Antonio, Texas, Karen Miller and husband Randy of North Richland Hills, Texas, and Trudy Jacques and husband Albert of Abilene, Texas. She is also survived by seven grandchildren; Mark Williams, Chevin Gladden, Damien Gladden, Melissa Higgins, Kara Prater, Zachary Jacques, and Ashley Jacques; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her brothers; T. W. Askew and Wade Askew, and one granddaughter Jill Williams Lenz.
