Anna Sue Hembree Davenport

(September 17, 1929 ~ May 9, 2023)

Anna Sue Hembree Davenport, daughter of William Jarrett Hembree and Elsie Mae Jones, married to Curtis Wayne 'Sonny' Davenport.

Sue Davenport died on May 9, 2023 in Methodist Hill Country Hospital Fredericksburg following a brief illness. Sue lived in Fredericksburg since 2016 when she moved from Brownwood, Texas with her husband Curtis Wayne (Sonny) Davenport whom she married on February 8, 1952. She was born September 17, 1929 in Jayton, Texas to Elsie Mae and William Jarrett Hembree. She was preceded in death by Sonny as well as both of her parents.

Sue spent most of her early years in Jayton, Texas, a town her grand-parents and great grand-parents had significance influence in founding and establishing. During her teenage years her family moved to Ballinger, Texas where she graduated in 1947. After high school, Sue went to Baylor University where she graduated in 1950 with a bachelor's degree in Psychology and Education, specializing in teaching mathematics.

Sue spent much of her professional life as a school teacher, and then subsequently owned her own gift and collectables business after she retired from teaching. Upon graduation from Baylor University in 1950, Sue accepted her first teaching job in her hometown of Jayton where she taught high school math. One of her earliest students, a cousin, said Sue constantly drilled him on math while training him for UIL "number sense", enabling him to qualify for the state competition. Sue had the distinction of having taught every one of her three children 6th and 7th grade math, at Abernathy, Texas where she taught for 18 years. She retired from teaching in 1986 creating the opportunity for her and her best-friend and partner Bettye Martin Province to start a gift and collectables store, Treasure Chest Creations, in Brownwood. Although much of Treasure Chest's offerings were gift, collectables and jewelry items, it also sold crafts much of which Sue created with her painting, jewelry making, quilting, and crocheting. Sue's family often joked she started Treasure Chest Creations so she could go to the Dallas Market Center's Jewelry shows to buy herself jewelry.

Sue is survived by her children Dave and Clare Davenport of Fredericksburg; Susan and Mike Seifert of Dickinson; and Ken and Tammy Davenport of Northlake, Texas. Additionally, she is survived by her grand-children Ryan and Kadie Davenport with great-grandchildren Gage and Drew from Argyle; Trey Davenport of Austin; Casey and Kasey McCauley with great-granddaughter Lyla of Houston; Matt Davenport of Houston; and Christina Seifert of Dickinson.

During the last 13 months of her life, Sue resided at Heritage Place Assisted Living Facility in Fredericksburg where she was known for her "feisty demeanor". Sue made many friends of the residents and staff at Heritage Place. Her family would like to express their gratitude and appreciation to Connie Eckhardt and the entire staff at Heritage Place, as well as the great doctors, nurses, support personnel, and Hospice Group at Methodist Hill Country Hospital. A private family celebration of life will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family ask that any memorials be given in Sue's memory to St Jude's Childrens Hospital which she supported throughout her life.
