Lewis Joe Adams
Tuscola

Lewis Joe Adams went to be with the Lord, Sunday, November 21, 2010. He was 48 years old. Service will be held at First Baptist Church Tuscola on Saturday, November 27 at 2 p.m. with Brother Jay McGaughy officiating. Interment will follow the service at Tuscola Cemetery. Directed by Fry ~ Bartlett Funeral Home, Tuscola. Visitations for Lewis will be Friday, November 26 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at the funeral home in Tuscola.
Lewis was born in Abilene, TX to BJ and Patricia Osborn Adams. He grew up in the Abilene area, and graduated from Abilene High in 1980. Lewis cherished his childhood memories of his Nanaw, who often made him a homemade country breakfast of biscuits, sausage, gravy, and eggs at her house before school. Nanaw taught Lewis to drive, and allowed him to drive himself to Mann Middle School before she continued on to work. Lewis' Mom was his #1 football fan, and he loved to ride motorcycles with her. Lewis' childhood hunting trips with his Dad, family, and friends began a lifelong love of the outdoors.
With Pamela Davidson Adams, Lewis had three children, Jeremy, Joshua, and Jennifer. Lewis' family grew on September 17, 1994, when he married Rhonda Kennedy, and gained a daughter, Cassie Kennedy. Their blended family found a home in Ovalo, Texas, where Lewis taught the children to drive, hunt, fish, and most importantly taught them about his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Lewis was proud to watch as one by one the children accepted Christ.
He began his career in trucking logistics at McLane Co. in Temple. Lewis' career included Stempel Manufacturing, Family Dollar, Fehr Foods, and Austin Express Deliveries. He relocated to Austin for a rewarding job as general manager for Noble Logistics. While in Austin, Lewis met local Austin musician Ricky Calmbach, and developed a close friendship with Ricky and his wife Courtney. Lewis and Rhonda loved to dance the night away when Ricky and his band played local dance halls.
Lewis loved the fresh air and tranquility of his home in Ovalo. He enjoyed Texas country music, dancing, football-football-football, and race cars. He was devoted to his family, and treasured his memories of family vacations to Ruidoso and Red River, New Mexico. He was his children's #1 fan and loved watching them play sports for the Jim Ned schools. Lewis was blessed with three granddaughters, Madison, Emily, and Lily. Papaw's girls were the light of his life and he enjoyed playing at the playground, reading to them, and taking them for rides through the pasture in his pickup truck.
Lewis is preceded in death by his father BJ Adams and sister Feather Ann Crawford.
Lewis is survived by Rhonda, his wife of sixteen years; his children Jeremy (Hope) of Temple, Joshua (Chelsey Glenn) of Stamford, Jennifer (Gherjuan) Robinson of Holloman AFB, and Cassie (Evan) Owens of Abilene; granddaughters Madison and Emily Adams, and Lily Kennedy; mother Patricia and husband, Jim Colwell, of Amarillo; step-mother Vonita Adams of Ovalo; sister Patty (Aubrey) White of Buffalo Gap; sisters in law Linda Brannon of Georgetown, and John and Becky Strother of Round Rock; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. The family wishes to acknowledge special friends: Ricky Calmbach, Bill Kennedy, and Bro. Jay McGaughy, and his special great-nephew Garrett, who was like a grandson to Lewis.

Browns overpower Patriots 34-14

CLEVELAND -- Soaked to the skin from a Gatorade shower, Eric Mangini met his mentor at midfield and did everything he could to contain himself.

It was tough not to smile.

His Cleveland Browns battered one of the NFL's best.

Rookie quarterback Colt McCoy scrambled for a touchdown, Peyton Hillis hammered for a career-high 184 yards and two scores and the Browns, using some trickery and a ton of offensive imagination, pounded the New England Patriots 34-14 on Sunday.

Two weeks after stunning New Orleans, the Browns (3-5) pulled off another shocker. Well rested after their bye week, they ended New England's five-game winning streak and did it decisively, outplaying one of the NFL's top teams for all 60 minutes.

This was no fluke. The Patriots (6-2) were battered, baffled and beaten badly.

It had to be particularly satisfying for Mangini, who defeated Bill Belichick, his former friend and mentor. The pair's relationship was damaged years ago and they ignored each other during pregame warmups. After the game Mangini shared a brief handshake with Belichick.

Hillis, healthy at last after being slowed by a thigh injury, scored on a 2-yard run in the first, and then put the Patriots away with a 35-yard burst late in the fourth to make it 34-14. He carried 29 times and picked up all 60 yards on Cleveland's game-sealing drive.

After the score, Browns offensive coordinator Brian Daboll was flattened by Pro Bowl tackle Joe Thomas as they attempted a celebratory chest bump on the sideline.

New England's Tom Brady went 19 of 36 for 224 yards and two TDs to rookie tight end Aaron Hernandez. However, Brady lost for the first time in five career starts against the Browns, who jumped to an early 10-0 lead and led by 17 entering the fourth.

Receiver Wes Welker kicked the extra point on Hernandez's second touchdown because Stephen Gostkowski suffered a thigh injury in the first half.

Brady was hindered by several dropped passes and a crucial fumble by tight end Rob Gronkowski just before halftime, when the Patriots, who came in averaging a league-leading 29 points per game, blew a chance to cut into Cleveland's 10-point lead.

With the game out of reach, Brady was replaced in the final minutes by Brian Hoyer.

McCoy, making his third straight start, had his best game as a pro. The third-round pick completed 14 of 19 passes for 174 yards, and his TD run in the third gave the Browns a 24-7 lead. With no receivers open, McCoy tucked the ball and sprinted for the left corner. He covered the final few yards with a headfirst dive, the kind of heads-up play that typified Cleveland's day.

Phil Dawson kicked field goals of 38 and 37 yards for the Browns, who may just be better than their record shows in their second season under Mangini. With the exception of a 28-10 loss to Pittsburgh, each of Cleveland's losses has been by 10 points or fewer.

After pulling off three trick plays two weeks ago to upset the defending Super Bowl champions in New Orleans, the Browns went back to their magic act to open a 17-7 lead.

On first down at the New England 11, wide receiver Joshua Cribbs took the snap at quarterback and handed the ball to Chansi Stuckey, who had lined up directly behind Cleveland's right guard. Stuckey took off toward the left corner, and by the time the fooled Patriots reacted, it was too late to catch the Browns' wide receiver, who beat them to the orange pylon.

The gadget play wouldn't have been possible if not for McCoy avoiding a sack on third down and throwing a 6-yard pass to Cribbs for a first to keep the drive going.

New England had a chance to pull closer, but after catching a pass from Brady, Gronkowski was stripped by Browns safety Abram Elam at the 3 and Cleveland recovered with just seconds left.

Shockingly, the Browns were up 10-0 before Brady took his first snap.

Cleveland took the opening kickoff and drove to the New England 21, where they had to settle for Dawson's first kick.

The Patriots then botched the ensuing kickoff as up backs Sammy Morris and Gronkowski couldn't decide who was going to catch it. Browns defensive back Ray Ventrone recovered, and two plays later, Hillis punched it in to give Cleveland a 10-point just 3:49 in.

New England's offense was outgained 132-21 after one, with Hillis outrushing them 63-11.

Brady and his receivers were out of sync and he was just 1 for 6 for 10 yards before taking the Patriots on an 11-play, 79-yard scoring drive. Brady's pass was intended for Gronkowski, but the ball deflected high in the air to Hernandez, who made a leaping grab at the back of the end zone.

Helene Cook Tyree
10/04/1909 - 10/24/2010

Helene Rose Cook Tyree, 101, died peacefully Sunday, October 24, 2010, in Raleigh, North Carolina. A memorial service will be held in the spring near the Cook ranch in South Taylor County, Texas, where she was born October 4, 1909. She will be buried beside her husband, Houston Tyree, in Dewey Cemetery, near Lawn, Texas.
Helene was the youngest child of Henry Barton (H. B.) Cook and Sallie Wells Cook. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her siblings, Constance Cook Montgomery (Ky), Paul Cook, Bond Cook, and Ruth Cook Raper.
Her parents were early leaders in the community. Her father was a pioneer rancher in the area and very active in civic and political matters, serving as Sheriff of Taylor County from 1896 to 1898. As a young woman, Helene's mother played a small organ and led the singing as her father, George W. Wells, started Baptist churches all over West Texas. After marriage she was very active in Lawn Baptist Church and the community for the rest of her life.
Helene and her sister Ruth often rode a pony to school, two miles from the ranch. They took the train together to study at Mary Hardin Baylor, a school for girls in Belton, Texas for one year and then finished high school in Abilene after their father died. Helene completed one year at Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene.
Soon after Helene, Ruth, and their mother returned to Lawn to live, Helene met Houston Tyree at the local drug store when Houston and his father stopped at the soda fountain on their way from Abilene to Goldsboro where they were in the oil business. Houston and Helene were married December 21, 1929. They had one child, Sallie, and a very happy marriage.
Houston, Helene, and Sallie moved from Lawn in 1944 to Sulphur Springs, in East Texas, where they made many friends quickly and were active in the Methodist church. Helene and a friend began the Girl Scout program for Hopkins County, and Helene served as a Girl Scout leader. Her troop had an excellent exhibit at the county fair. The family moved to Bryan, Texas in 1947, where they made many good friends and were active in the church.
In 1949 they moved to Miami, Florida, where Helene shared large pink grapefruit and key limes from the trees she tended in the back yard. She also rooted little lime trees to give to her many friends and neighbors. Books were important to Helene from a very young age, and she also spent spare time writing, including pieces about her experiences and observations and her autobiography.
When Houston became the Tennis Pro at Miami Shores Country Club in the 1960s, Helene enlisted a friend to teach her bookkeeping so that she could keep the Pro Shop books for Houston. She continued to keep meticulous personal financial ledgers and records after Houston's retirement. Grandchildren Valerie and Ty always had a good time on long visits with "Grana" and "Grandang" in Miami Shores.
Houston suffered a head injury from a fall while playing tennis in 1978. Helene cared for him in their home as he gradually declined physically and mentally. After his death in 1982, she remained in Miami until she decided to move to Raleigh in 1990, at the age of 80, to be near her family. She was very happy in her apartment in Raleigh, and she made many friends of all ages. She often noted she had lived "40 years in Texas and 40 years in Miami."
In 1999, after a fall in West Virginia at a Tyree family reunion, Helene moved to an assisted living community in Raleigh. When she reached 90 years of age she began to wonder aloud if she would reach her 100th birthday. And she did. On October 4,, 2009, Helene had a wonderful 100th birthday party with her family and all the residents and staff, enjoying an excellent juggling show, a slide show of photos from her first 100 years, and ice cream with a very large cake decorated with roses because Helene's middle name is Rose.
Helene's health gradually declined, but she continued to enjoy eating, wheeling herself around the facility in her wheelchair, looking at the clouds and trees, and straightening or cleaning if she noticed any bit of lint, as she had done all her life. She often looked at the tall pines, oaks, poplars, and other trees and observed, "We don't have tall trees like that in Texas."
On October 4, 2010, at her 101st birthday celebration, Helene demonstrated her lifelong love of sweets as she enthusiastically ate a large piece of cake.
Helene's health began to decline rapidly after experiencing seizures on October 18, 2010. The staff and Hospice of Wake County provided excellent care for Helene and kept her comfortable in her final days.
Helene is survived by her daughter Sallie Tyree Everette (John), her grandchildren Valerie Everette Woods (Duncan) and John Tyree Everette (Amy Colvin), nieces and nephews Doris Montgomery Hanks (Dick), Billie Ruff Cook Willis, Paul Cook, Jr., Jan Cook, Pete Tyree (Pat), Bill Tyree (Joanne), Neel Tyree (Beverly), Dick Miller (Joanne), Fenton Miller (Carol), Bill Miller (Carol), Jack Miller, Bill Tyree (Ellen), Andrea Tyree, Tom Tyree (Maxine), Robert Tyree (Mary), and many other Cook and Tyree extended family members.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Cook-Mayfield Memorial Library or to the Dewey Cemetery Association, c/o Cook-Mayfield Memorial Library, P.O. Box 97, Lawn, Texas 79530.
Your condolences, memories of Helene, and photos can be shared online at www.CremationSocietyNC.com.

Below is an excerpt of the interview I had with Anna Bell in 2009.  Her full story will be in the Traveling Tales and Whispering Walls book by the Jim Ned Valley Heritage Preservation.

"I went to the Rogers school and then I went to Lawn the last two years. I always liked school but I don’t know if I had a favorite subject but my least favorite was Spanish when I got into high school. Then, you were required to have two years of foreign language to graduate. I didn’t have a very good teacher, I don’t think she was qualified to really teach Spanish and Spanish was real hard for me.   I graduated from Lawn in 1937 with 9 kids in my graduating class. I wasn’t a very strong child so I didn’t play sports very much but I do remember playing a little basketball at Rogers and we had big black bloomers were our uniform. They were big black bloomers with a white blouse was our uniform. We did a lot of memory work, I remember memorizing poems and what not but my favorite thing was participating in plays, school plays. I love that. I remember being in school plays at Rogers and then after I went to Lawn, we had several plays. Our senior year it was "Here Comes Charlie and I was Charlie and I was this little ole country bumpkin’ that had to move to the city to live with relatives and I had a pet hen, her name was Hortense and I carried her to the city with me. I remember during the performance I had this hen in my arms and she had to go to the bathroom just all down the front of me and it just about broke up all the class."

Please pray for the Kelly Denson Smith ('85) family and consider sending Kelly a note.

Kelly writes:  Our eldest daughter, Caitlin, was due in September 2010. On April 14, she was involved in a serious car accident. She has a fractured hip and a pelvis that is fractured in 3 places. Our grandson, Avery Jack, was born on April 15, 2010, but was too seriously injured to survive. He died the morning of April 15. Caitlin was in the hospital for a week and will spend 2 - 3 months in rehab. We are sad about AJ, but thankful that we didn't lose both of them.

Arnett Weeks Jr. remembered

Arnett Weeks

Arnett Weeks

Weeks died June 24 in Victoria after a short illness. Funeral services were Saturday at First Baptist Church in Bangs with burial in the Bangs Cemetery.

Weeks was superintendent of schools and football and track coach at the Jim Ned school district from 1959 to 1971. He later served as elementary principal in Anson and was superintendent and coach at Bangs school district from 1973 to 1985. Weeks was born near Goldsboro and graduated from Lawn High School is 1942.

He attended Howard Payne College and played football, but left in 1943 to join the Navy during World War II. Arnett earned a Presidential Unit Citation and three bronze stars as well as the U.S. Naval Commendation. He participated in three invasions in the Pacific — Saipan, Guam, and Iwo Jima.

His ship was sunk at Iwo Jima, but he survived.

In the fall of 1946, Arnett returned to Howard Payne to continue his education and to play football. He graduated from Howard Payne in 1949 and then earned a master’s degree from Southwest Texas. He began his teaching and coaching career at Grandview High School in 1949.

Arnett was athletic director and coached basketball, football, and track at Cisco Junior College from 1955 to 1958. After retirement, he assisted coaching track at HPU for about two years. He served in public educations for 50 years.

His daughter, Patsy Kennamer, of Bangs, said many of her father’s former students stayed in touch with him regularly.

“There are many, many of Daddy’s ‘boys’ from Grandview, Granbury, and Cisco who called and visited him frequently,” she said. “Daddy was inducted in the HPU Sports Hall of Fame last year.”

Kennamer said what really stands out is his love for the Lord and his love for children and young people.

Bruce Land, of Abilene, a retired coach and administrator, ran track for Weeks at Cisco Junior College in 1956-57 and was an All-American under Weeks for two years.

“Coach Weeks has always been an inspiration to me because of his Christian faith and his honesty and integrity,” Land said. “All these things helped me to mold my philosophies as I matured and became a coach and educator myself. I can think of no other role model that had a greater influence on my life than this man.”

Weeks was also involved in civic life. He served on the Bangs Independent School District board of trustees for 11 years and as the mayor of Bangs for one year.

He is survived by his wife, Patsy, and three daughters, Patsy Kennamer, of Bangs, Nancy Henry and husband Bill of Godley, and Janie McClatchy and husband Ricky of San Antonio; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Two sisters survive him: Johnnie Ruth Duncan of Big Spring, and Peggy Sue Satterwhite and husband Bobby of Lawn.

Visit the "In Memory" page and post a special response about Mr. Weeks if you would like.

Dayne Leonard Gossett

Dayne Leonard Gossett, 65, passed away Monday, June 1, 2009. Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at Faith Baptist Church, 2300 South 20th Street. Burial will follow in Tuscola Cemetery, directed by Abilene Funeral Home.

Monday morning, God looked around his garden and found an empty space. He then looked down upon this earth and saw Dayne’s tired face. He put His arms around him and took him home to a place where he will no longer be in pain - a beautiful place where he can go fishing and chase birds all he wants. He will watch all the Texas Rangers baseball games, Dallas Cowboy’s games and Texas Longhorn football games.

Dayne Leonard Gossett was born on May 3, 1944, in Castroville, Texas, to the late Warren and Pearl White Gossett. He finished high school at Jim Ned (Tuscola) in 1963. He went into the U.S. Navy in August of 1963, where he received the National Defense Service Metal, Vietnam Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. He worked as a cook for Milono’s and various other jobs but the one he liked the best was driving an 18 wheeler from coast to coast. He and his wife drove for nine years together and then he drove by himself until his stroke in November of 1999. His pride and joy was his family and he loved spending time with all of them.

Survivors include his wife of 21 years, Joann Gossett of Abilene; two sisters, Jean Parker and husband, S. J. and Ann Seybold, all of Abilene; one uncle, L. E. White and wife, Juanita; mother-in-law, Norine Castle of Hamlin; sister-in-law, Yvonne Castle of Hamlin; and numerous cousins and friends. He never had any children of his own but he loved to spoil his nieces and nephews, Steven Parker and wife, Retha, Terrell Parker and wife, Tracy, all of Abilene, Jeff Seybold and wife, Cindy and daughter, Shelby, all of Austin and Melissa Mitchell and husband, Chad of Abilene. He also spoiled the great nieces and nephews, Neal Parker, Shay Onken and husband, Greg, and Leah Parker, all of Abilene, Tara Parker of Austin, and Kyle Parker of Abilene.

He loved to take Caitlynn and Cameron Mitchell to school in the morning and go back and pick them up in the afternoon, which was the high point of his day. He also loved going to church and seeing Neal lead the singing or play the piano; Leah play the piano or the organ; and Steven Parker preach.

Mr. Gossett was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, France Rardon and Jo Lynn Strakos; and a brother-in-law, Bud (Lloyd) Seybold.

50-Year Class Reunion was a great success - over 75 attended from the classes of 1958, 1959, 1960 and a few from 1961.  Several of these classmates had not seen each other since they graduated and were very glad they attended.  Teachers that attended were Oran Egger and Frank Hibler.  I got there a little late so I am not sure at the moment what the activities were before lunch but before the end of the Reunion there was a time of sharing.  Stories that went on for over an hour.  Remembering the good old days, appologies of less than kind treatment during school, kudos to those putting the reunion together and some very special speeches from Coach Kibler and Mr. Egger and a few others that brought tears to my eyes.  This is family, a common bond, no matter how many years shared or how many miles apart.

Abilene fire claims mother of three; 7-year-old in critical condition Cause of blaze yet to be determined Sunday, February 1, 2009 A woman died in a house fire in the 1200 block of N. 15th Street around 2:30 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 1, 2009.

In Abilene, Richard and Wanda Ulmer expected to wake up Sunday morning and attend church with their family. Instead, the couple were awakened about 2 a.m. Sunday to confusion and tragedy. Their daughter Michele Edwards, 39, was killed in an early-morning fire at her home on North 15th Street. One of their 7-year-old twin grandsons was flown to a Lubbock hospital in critical condition with third-degree burns over most of his body. Two other children suffered minor injuries. Edwards’ husband, Eddie Edwards, was not injured in the fire. The Ulmers raised three daughters in the house at 1234 N. 15th St. They said they gave the home to their oldest daughter and now live in a house behind her. Their three grandchildren often crossed the alley to get to the Ulmer’s home where a trampoline, sodas and swimming pool in the summertime are waiting for them.

Michele Edwards was trapped in the bathroom of the house and is believed to have died from smoke inhalation, according to a news release from the Abilene Fire Department. Abilene fire spokesman Gary Hamner said neighbors told authorities they could hear the woman screaming from inside the burning home. She was found in the bathroom, where she had apparently turned on the shower to try to escape the flames, Hamner said. Hamner said the one 7-year-old twin boy suffered third-degree burns over 70 percent to 90 percent of his body and was flown to University Medical Center in Lubbock. His 9-year-old sister suffered minor burns on her shoulder and the other 7-year-old twin boy suffered minor injures. Both were taken to a hospital but are now staying with an aunt in Merkel, the Ulmers said. Eddie Edwards was in Lubbock Sunday with his son, the Ulmers said. Firefighters believe the blaze started in the room the twin boys shared but they have not determined the cause. “They lost everything they have,” Wanda said. A picnic table remains intact in front of the house. Everything else around the house is burned or badly charred.

The American Red Cross is assisting the family, along with other neighbors who are volunteering their help. The fire department received a call on the structure fire at 2:21 a.m. Firefighters found the house fully engulfed in flames when they arrived. Three fire engines, a ladder truck, a battalion chief, a fire investigator, a safety officer and fire chaplain responded to the scene. Abilene police officers and ambulance personnel also assisted.

Richard Ulmer said he knows Michele is in heaven, but will miss his daughter nonetheless. “I’ll miss her laugh,” he said. “And the happy person she was.” Richard said his daughter was a great mother who made sure her children were taken care of. Wanda said she will miss her daughter, after having her close for so long. “God, I’m going to miss her,” Wanda said.

Congrats to Jerry and Brook Randall ('84)

Anita Kaye Dunlap

Anita Kaye Dunlap

Haskell, Texas

Anita Kaye Dunlap, 48, beloved mother, daughter, and friend to a multitude of people around the world completed her worldly travels on November 1, 2009 after a valiant battle with cancer. A Graveside service will be 2:00 pm, Thursday, November 5, 2009 at Willow Cemetery under the direction of Holden McCauley Funeral Home, Haskell. A visitation will be Wed. Nov. 4, 2009, 5:15 to 6:30 at the funeral home. The family will also receive friends at 1103 North Ave. G, Haskell, TX.

Anita was born January 27, 1961; to Gene and Thelma Dean Dunlap in Haskell, Texas on a cold snowy day. Anita attended public schools in Spur and McCaulley, Texas; graduating from High School in 1979. She attended Angelo State University where she graduated in 1982 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Government and English. She continued her pursuit of higher education and received a Masters of Education in Special Education.

Anita was one of the survivors of the 1978 McCaulley bus wreck. This experience shaped her life philosophy of living each day as if it were her last. It inspired her ambition to travel and make a difference in the lives of students around the world.

A lifelong educator and sports enthusiast, Anita began her teaching and coaching career in Novice, Texas and continued in Hamlin, McCamey, Jim Ned, and Seminole before being hired by the U.S. Department of Defense Schools where she taught the children of military personnel in Iceland, Germany, and Japan.

Anita's career achievements were numerous, but they pale in comparison to her greatest accomplishment of all - the birth of her daughter, Shady Blue Destiny Dunlap, on June 19, 1997. "My Girl" fulfilled every wish that Anita had of being a mom! In her own words, "whoever would've thought a poor kid from a ranch in West Texas could have seen and done so much in such a short time? I have been truly blessed with family, friends, opportunities, education, and work."

Anita is survived by daughter Shady Blue, mother Thelma, sister Shirley Parker, brother James "Cookie" Dunlap and wife Judy, all of Haskell, and dear nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She was preceded in death by her father, 2 sisters - Leta Faye Dunlap and Carolyn Sue Wilborn.
