I am asking for your prayers during a trying time in my life. A little over 5 years ago, my truck was rear-ended and I received a severe whiplash. I have been working through those challenges all this time through physical, massage and chiropractic therapy, injections, radio-frequency ablations and meds.
I was diagnosed with Cervical and Thoracic Spondylosis Syndrome in the facet joints; Occipital Neuralgia; Cervicogenic Headaches; Pulsatile Tinnitus. Surgery was never on my list, until I learned of the Occipital Nerve Decompression Surgery. All the pain that I was having from my cervical, up into my head seem to be a classic case of the greater and lessor occipital nerves being compressed in some way. A couple of months ago, my husband and I made the decision to go ahead with the evaluation to see if I was a candidate for this type of surgery.
I came away from that visit not only deemed an excellent candidate for nerve decompression surgery, but informed of the possibilities of life again without so much pain. I will still have some challenges with my thoracic and lower cervical, but this head pain should be reduced by 80% following the surgery and 3 months of rehab, according to the doctors prognosis.
The surgery is scheduled for December 17th in Houston. Please pray for my family, the doctors and care unit, the rehab team and myself during these times. Praise be to God and thank you for your prayers in advance. ~ Your Classmate and Friend, Debbie Dacus Stewart

Gwynelle Johnson, 74, passed away on Tuesday, November 26, 2013 at Hendrick Hospice. A funeral service will be held at 3:30pm Sunday, December 1, 2013 at the First Baptist Church of Buffalo Gap, Steve Joiner officiating. Burial will follow in the Tuscola Cemetery, directed by Fry~Bartlett Funeral Home, Tuscola. A visitation will be held from 5 to 7pm Saturday, November 30, 2013 at the funeral home.
Gwyn was born on June 19, 1939 to J.K. and Melba (Yoes) Johnson in Abilene. She was lifelong resident of Abilene, where she raised her two sons.
She worked 27 years as secretary to the District Attorney of Taylor County.
She is survived by her sons Kenneth Welch of Brenham, and Fonzie Johnson and wife Jennifer, and their children Seth, Jayden, and Jeremiah of Bastrop; uncle Bernice Johnson of Tuscola; sisters, Anita Dison and husband David and their son Kyle of Abilene; Carolyn Teten and husband Richard and their children Toni and Matt.
She was preceded in death by her parents.

 J.E. "Cotton" Howard

James E. Howard, 88, went to rest in the arms of Jesus, his Lord and Savior, on Sunday, November 24, 2013. A funeral service, with military honors, will be held at 1:00pm Saturday, November 30, 2013 at the Bronte Church of Christ, where he was a member. Burial will follow in the Dewey Cemetery, directed by Fry~Bartlett Funeral Home, Tuscola. A visitation for Cotton will be held from 4 to 6pm Friday, November 29, 2013 at the funeral home.
Howard, known to friends and family as J.E. or Cotton, was born on December 16, 1924 in Hardeman County, Texas to John and Harriet Swindle Howard. He will just miss celebrating his 89th birthday. Always sporting a radiant smile, Cotton never met a stranger and was gracious and kind to all who knew him. He graduated from Tuscola High School in 1942 and joined the Marine Corps. After serving his country during WWII, he settled in Midland, Texas to work in the oil industry. This work led him to positions in Oklahoma City, Odessa, Abilene, San Antonio, Corpus Christi and finally to Saudi Arabia. Then they settled in Houston where he retired from TIW Corporation (A Pearce Industries Company) in July of 1994.
Cotton married Hazel Williams on May 25 1946 in Abilene, and they had two children before her death in 1960, Carla Kay and James Kent. After Hazel's death, he married Coleen Joy Raper, who had three boys, Terry Wayne, Tommy Wade, and Larry Lynn. Two years after Coleen and Cotton married, they had a child, Robin Nancille.
He is survived by his children, Carla Kay Howard Moore and husband Tom of Lubbock, Texas, Terry Wayne Howard and wife Mary of Katy, Texas, James Kent Howard and wife Cheryl of Castroville, Texas, Tommy Wade Howard and wife Jodi of Seguin, Texas, Larry Lynn Howard and wife Deb of Blackwell, Texas, and Robin Nancille Howard Gandy and husband, Geff of Fair Oaks Ranch, Texas.
Cotton was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, Coleen Joy, his parents John and Harriett, four brothers, Buck, Tice, Oliver, and Victor, four sisters, Rachel, Verna, Ruth, and Mary.
An extremely proud grandfather, he will be missed tremendously by his 13 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren-they will miss their "Grandpa Cotton Candy". Cotton was also an admired uncle to countless nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He taught all, that Jesus is the Lord of life-His kind spirit and love for others made it simple to see in the way he lived.

James E. (Cotton) Howard, 88 passed away Sunday November 24, 2013 at Abilene Regional Medical Center. A Funeral service will be held at the Bronte Church of Christ on Saturday November 30, 2013 at 1:00 PM with burial at Dewey Cemetery in Lawn. Services will be directed by Fry Bartlett Funeral Home of Tuscola. A visitation will be held on Friday November 29, 2013 from 4:00-6:00 PM at the Funeral Home.

Billy Frank Thornton, 85, passed away on Tuesday, November 19, 2013 at Hendrick Hospice, from injuries he received in September. A funeral service will be held at 2:00pm Sunday, November 24, 2013 in the Bill Thornton
Arena (gymnasium) at Jim Ned High School, directed by Fry~Bartlett Funeral Home, Tuscola, officiated by Dan Harkness and Gary Don Choate. Entrance into the Bill Thornton Memorial Arena is located on the back of Jim Ned High School. A visitation will be held from 4 to 7pm Saturday, November 23, 2013 at the funeral home.
Bill was born to Isaac and Thelma (Windham) Thornton on October 17, 1928 in Abilene. In his family, he was the only boy of five. He graduated from Abilene high school and then went to work for WTU. During his early years as a meter reader for WTU, he would take his coffee break at Barnes and Williams Drugstore. This is where he met Laura and they married on March 10th, 1951 in Abilene. For the next 62 years, Bill and Laura where never apart for very long, always spending time with family and taking care of each other.
WTU transferred Bill and Laura to Tuscola where he became the local area manager and she was a stay at home wife and mother raising their two boys. Bill, after 41 years, retired from WTU in 1990.
Bill was a pillar in the Tuscola community, always quick with a handshake, welcoming smile, and slight chuckle. Bill captured the essence of rural Texas.
In retirement, Bill was always active. He was a member of the Southern Taylor County Lions Club for 58 years and he enjoyed gardening, he was often found working in his garden during the hot summer days. Bill's true passion happened during the school year when he could follow, and support his Jim Ned Indians. For 45 years he ran the score board and clock at the Indians' basketball and football games. Upon his retirement from the scoreboard, Bill and Laura had courtside seats for every game.
He and Laura are active members of the Tuscola Church of Christ.
Bill is survived by his wife Laura, two sons, Billy, Frank Thornton, Jr. of Santa Claria, CA; and Danny Lee Thornton and wife Rita of Grand Prairie; two granddaughters, Angela Thornton of Plano and Amy Thornton and husband Philip Wright of Smith Station, AL; two great grandchildren BlakeThornton and D.J. Thornton: two sisters Ina Mae McMahon of Enid, OK and Corine Parr of Richmond.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters Ada Bell Cody and Lawanda Lewis.

I cannot believe I missed announcing my granddaughter's birth: Oh Happy Day!! Debbie Dacus Stewart ('84) is the proud "Nana" of her granddaughter, Primrose Irelynn Renee Stewart, born 27 Mar. 2013, 11:50 a.m., 7 lbs 5 oz, 18 1/2 inches. She was 6 weeks pre-mature and stayed in the hospital for 2 weeks. She is now 6 months old and sooooo healthy, smiling, giggling, rolling over and just a joy!!

Marvin Joe Rutland, 91, passed away September 21, 2013 in his home. A funeral service will be held on 10:30am Wednesday, September 25, 2013 at Lawn Church of Christ, directed by Fry~Bartlett Funeral Home, Tuscola. Burial will follow in McBee Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 6 to 8pm Tuesday, September 24, 2013 at the funeral home.
Marvin was born May 17th, 1922 to Joseph Edward and Bertha Ona (Morse) Rutland in Oplin. He graduated from Oplin High School in 1939. He attended Abilene Christian College before serving in the Army Air Force during World War II. He served from 1942 through 1946 as a flight engineer Tech Sergeant in Okinawa, Manila, the Phillipines, and Tinian, Marianas. He resumed his education at Abilene Christian College in 1946.
Marvin met Doris Runyan while at Abilene Christian College and they were married on November 16, 1947 in McAlister, New Mexico. Marvin loved his wife of almost 66 years. She was his true love. He also loved his children, grandchildren, relatives, friends and church family.
He farmed and ranched his entire life in Taylor and Callahan counties keeping the farm in continuous operation since 1908 as a legacy for his descendents. He received the Centennial Family Land Heritage award from the Texas State Legislature in 2010. He enjoyed the challenge of tilling the soil and working with cattle. He was a good and generous neighbor, sharing with those in need. His word was his true bond.
Marvin attended the Oplin Church of Christ in his early years and later became a member of the Lawn Church of Christ where he was active as an elder for several years. Marvin was a member of the Texas Farm Bureau and served as president for many years. He also served on the Jim Ned School Board for 15 years.
He is survived by his wife, Doris and his children: daughter, Janie Runyan and husband, Larry of Mansfield; son, Steve and wife, Marsha of Oplin; son, Gary and wife, Tik of Thailand, and daughter, Becky Peschell and husband, Sam, of North Richland Hills. They have 12 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
Preceding him in death, includes an infant brother, his daughter, Winona Gail, and his parents.

Forrest Lee Jennings, 88, passed away on Sunday, September 15, 2013 at his home in Ovalo. Funeral service will be held at 10:30am Wednesday, September 18, 2013 at the Lawn Church of Christ, Lawn, directed by Fry~Bartlett Funeral Home, Tuscola. Visitation was held Tuesday, September 17, 6 to 8pm at the funeral home. Burial will be at McBee Cemetery.
Lee was born to Alvie and Ercel (Powers) Jennings on August 28, 1925 in Hamby. He graduated from Leuders High School in 1943, and enlisted in the Navy in 1944. Lee served in the Pacific Theater in WWII; he was stationed in Hawaii, Marshall Islands, Mariana Islands, and the Philippines.
Lee Married Betty Jo Beene on August 9, 1947 in Cisco. He was employed by Halliburton Oil Well for 20 years, but always desired to be around livestock, especially horses. They moved to their present home north of Lawn 43 years ago. There, Lee became a full time farmer-rancher.
He was a lifetime member of the Church of Christ, and attended the Lawn Church of Christ. Before moving to the Lawn area, Lee was an elder at the Baker Heights Church of Christ in Abilene.
Lee was a member of the Texas Farm Bureau, Taylor Electric and former member of the Jim Ned School Board.
He is survived by his wife Betty, son Russell, daughters, Patsy Shero and her husband Paul, and Nancy Suson and her husband Dwight, and sister Hazel Fillmon. Lee and Betty have five grandchildren, and seven great grand children.
Lee's parents, brother, Lawrence, and sister, Jimmie Collum preceded him in death.
Lee was a friendly man, and has friends all around this area. We will all miss him.

Update 9/20/13: Kimberly Lou Rogholt, 50, born March 3, 1963 to Benny D. and Virginia Martin Singletary in Abilene, Texas, passed away on Wednesday, September 18, 2013 in Denton. Arrangements are under the direction of Denton Funeral Home.
Praying for the Singletary family and Kim's children and grandchildren. Kim Singletary went to Jim Ned during the school year 1979-1980 in the class of 1981. Her brother Jeff was in my class ('84) during that time. Kim's daughter Kayla, posted that Kim passed away last night at 9:19 pm 18 Sep 2013, I believe in the Bedford, Texas area. I pray for strength and peace during this time.
Kim Singletary Rogholt passed away today. She was in my One Act play at Jim Ned. She is survived by her siblings - Jeff, DeWayne and Lucy Bortt and daughters Amber and Kayla. Please pray for them as they deal with their loss.

Joretta Jean Boozer Pogue, 82, passed from this life into the arms of Jesus Saturday night, September 14, 2013.
A graveside service will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 17, 2013, in Elmwood Memorial Park Cemetery, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory, Abilene. Serving as pallbearers are Rick Cason, Joe Snow, David Morris, Phil Sims, Sid Saverance, and Allen Lamb. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 a.m. at Pioneer Drive Baptist Church, with Dr. Jeff Reid and Reverend Jack Ridlehoover officiating. The family will receive friends at a visitation 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Devoted to her faith, her family, and her friends, Joretta served as a Registered Nurse and was known for her passion in caring for her patients. She was born in Ovalo, Texas, December 18, 1930, to A.D. and Nell Boozer and was raised there, along with her three sisters and two brothers, where her father owned the local barbershop. After graduating from Jim Ned High School, Joretta went on to complete her nursing degree at Good Samaritan School of Nursing in Phoenix, Arizona. As a Head Nurse for Hendrick Hospital, a representative for the City Health Department, and later as a school nurse for AISD, she invested her whole heart in her profession.
In 1958, Joretta married James M. Pogue, and they made their home for fifty years at 318 Hawthorne, Abilene, Texas, where they raised their two children, Sarah and Jimmy. Together, Joretta and James built a strong and loving foundation that continues to bless our families. After joining Pioneer Drive Baptist Church in its founding year, she began a lifelong commitment of service and fellowship by teaching third grade Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and later her beloved Ladies Class, the Love Class. She was also part of a medical mission's team that travelled to Venezuela.
Joretta's life was centered around her daughter and son, and she was overjoyed to become a grandmother to her four grandchildren.
Joretta leaves behind a family blessed by her memory: her daughter and son-in-law, Sarah and Tom Beebe of Midland; her son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Laura Pogue of Abilene; her grandchildren, Jamie, Tommy, Kathryn, and David; her sister, Su Swindle and her brother and sister-in-law, Van and Melba Boozer, all of Abilene; as well as a host of nieces and nephews.
Grateful for Joretta's legacy of faith and service, we rejoice that she is now forever in the presence of the Lord and reunited with loved ones she has missed for so long.

Murlee Moore, 88, passed away Tuesday September 3, 2013, at a local nursing facility. The funeral service is scheduled for 3:00pm Saturday, September 7, 2013, at North Park Baptist Church, Rev. Louis Johnson officiating, directed by Fry~Bartlett Funeral Home, Tuscola. Burial will be in the Tuscola cemetery at 5:00pm. A visitation for Murlee will be at North Park Baptist Church from 4 to 6pm Friday, September 6, 2013.
Murlee was born to Robert Clarence and Della Anne (Kinney) Satterwhite on September 20, 1924, in northern Runnels County. She attended Lawn High School where she graduated at age 16.
During WW II Murlee worked for Consolidated Vultee Aircraft Corporation in Fort Worth. She married Carlton Casey Moore in 1945. They first live in the Lawn area until 1949 when they moved to Abilene. She was a stay at home mother who raise their three children. In 1958 Murlee rejoined the work force as a watch assembly worker at the Timex Corp. In 1978 she went to work for Rita Barber where she was a seamstress 10 years. Murlee retired in 1987 to become a fulltime housewife, grandmother, and great grandmother.
She was very active in her community as an adult leader in the Hamby 4-H club. She was also Hamby Home Demonstration Club and the Abilene Aggie Mom's Club. She has been a member of the North Park Baptist Church since 1950.
She is survived by her three children, daughters Carolyn Griffith and husband Stanley of Abilene, and Jo Anne Hill and husband Orvel of La Grange, and son Randall Moore and wife Jan of Kula, Hawaii, sister Fae Ola Zimmerlee of Lawn, and brother Bobby Satterwhite and wife Peggy of Lawn. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters Elva Mae Barbee and Erma Sutton Wilder, and two brothers Orval Satterwhite and Granvalle Satterwhite.

Jack W. Hancock, 98, passed away Wednesday August 22, 2013 at his ranch in Ovalo. A funeral service will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, August 24, 2013 at the First Baptist Church, Tuscola, with burial to follow in the Tuscola Cemetery. Pastor Dewayne Bush officiating, directed by Fry~Bartlett Funeral Home, Tuscola. A visitation will be held from 5 to 7pm Friday August 24, 2013 at the funeral home.
Jack was born November 12, 1914 in Sherman, Texas. His parents were Sarah Katherine (Riley) and Louis Norman Hancock. There were seven children in the family: Muriel, Ruth, Eugene, George, Jack, Katherine and Billy. Shortly after Jack was born, the family moved to a farm bordered by Chateau Creek six miles outside of Sherman. There he learned his love for agriculture.
Jack began school in a one-room school named Providence. His teachers were his two older sisters, Muriel and Ruth Hancock. He must have been a rounder because once he crawled out the window of the school and ran home. When Ruth got home that afternoon, she told their mother that she had to make Jack mind at school. Who would know at that time that he too would become a teacher?
By the time he was 10 years old, the family had moved to West Texas in search of a new beginning. His family lived first in Redwine, but soon moved to New Home where he worked on his dads farm. He graduated from New Home high school in 1933.
Jack attended and graduated from Texas Tech University in Lubbock with a degree in Agriculture. While there he worked at the Tech dairy, rising at 4:30 am to milk 15 cows before going to school. His senior year he became the student assistant to Dr. Harbough, Professor of Veterinary Medicine.
After graduation, Jack became the manager and butcher for the New Home Coop Cold-storage Locker Plant. He met and married Frankie Lee Straley on June 8, 1941. She was teaching at New Home at the time. They had two girls: Joy Kay and Jackie Sue.
When Jack left the locker plant, he was appointed instructor in the National Youth Association Program as Instructor of Farm Equipment at Tech. He taught agriculture and science for public school as well as to GIs after WWII. He taught Sunday School and regular schools for approximately 60 years.
Jack served his country as a Naval Officer during World War II. He received his commission at Columbia University in New York. He joined the Navy V6 Program and taught Recognition (of ships and aircraft) to new recruits at Bitter Creek, VA and Green Bay, WI. Later he served on the APA5 Barnett during the Battle of Okinawa as recognition and assistant gunnery officer. He was discharged in New Orleans on December 15, 1945, having served his country three years.
When WW II was over, Jack returned to teaching, farming and ranching. For the rest of his life, he had a hand in agriculture and was a banker with Production Credit for several years.
After the death of his first wife, Frankie, Jack met and married the second love of his life: Keva Lou Hays Holley on January 6, 1967. For seven years they ranched, while serving God at home and abroad.
Besides his teaching and military service, he was a Mason for almost 50 years and member of the Lions Club 50 yrs. As a member of the Taylor County Farm Bureau Association, he served as president. As Co-chairman he worked to establish the benefits program for farmers. In Taylor County, he served on the Livestock Show committee when the Coliseum was built and was General Superintendent of the Show and Lamb division at various times. As a School Board member of Jim Ned ISD, he served as president and secretary at the time Jim Ned was established through consolidation of South Taylor and Lawn.
A countless number of young Girl Scouts knew him as Ranger Jack at Camp Booth Oaks where he served as camp manager for the West Texas Girl Scout Council. In 1997 in Forsan, he was appointed to the Forsan City Council for a short time. He served as deacon in the Baptist Church for over 60 years.
As a world traveler, he saw 44 states and traveled to the Philippines, China, Japan, Israel, Egypt, Switzerland, Italy, Mexico, Greece, Canada, and Brazil.
He lived a long and healthy life, never losing his ability to speak publicly with humor and intelligence. He shared his war experiences with the students of Forsan High School when he was 92, and received the Veteran of the Month award on his 93rd birthday in Big Spring, where he spoke over an hour about his life, the war, and his God.
He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, counselor, and a real friend to man. Most importantly, he loved his God. He has said again and again, "I met the greatest man who ever lived when I was 12 years old, and I have always tried to follow His footsteps; that man is Jesus Christ."
He was an exceptional man who knew how to live. His family and friends will miss him greatly and will be challenged to match his example.
Jack was preceded in death by parents, wife, Frankie Lee Straley Hancock, wife, Keva Lou Hays Holley Hancock, is six siblings and his son-in-law Tommie Wayne Henry.
He is survived by his three daughters, Joy Kay Vazquez and husband Ernesto Vazquez of Laredo, Glen Dena Ivie and husband Charles Ivie of Tatum, NM, Jackie Sue Henry of Ovalo, six grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren, Tim Griffin and wife Dina, and children Bailey, Emma, and Seaver Hancock of Abilene, Kim Turner and husband Chris, and children Jordan and Hunter Jack of Topeka, KS, Carlos Ernesto Vazquez, and sons Carlos and Andres of Rio Gordo, Spain, Sam Griffin and wife Stacy, and children Isabel and Hays of Levelland, Mandi Lewis and husband Eric, and son Hadley of Sherman, John Paul Vazquez and wife Esther of Sacramento, CA

I (Debbie Stewart) had the privilege of visiting with and interviewing Mr. Jack W. Hancock earlier this year and what a blessing those 3 hours were. He was a proud Jim Ned Community member and loved being on his mountain overlooking the Jim Ned Valley. He taught Vocational Agriculture at South Taylor High School in Tuscola from 1950-1957 and judged many a livestock show. Jack passed away peacefully in his home ...with his daughter Jackie by his side. Jack W. Hancock was just less than 3 months shy of his 99th birthday. (12 Nov 1914-21 Aug 2013) Please keep the Hancock family in your prayers. The funeral is pending, but under the care of Fry-Bartlett Funeral Home in Tuscola and the service will be at the First Baptist Church in Tuscola, Texas.

Gilbert Paul Copeland passed away Aug 18 at the age of 88. Funeral Services will be held 2:00 PM Wed Aug 21 at the First Baptist Church in Cisco, with visitation at Kimbrough Funeral Home Tue Aug 20 from 5:00-7:00 PM.
Born in Lawn, Texas Dec 7, 1924, Gilbert was 17 when Pearl Harbor was bombed. Having contracted polio at age 12, Military Services were reluctant to let him to enlist, but he talked his way into the Coast Guard and spent the war guarding New York Harbor. After WW II he returned to Texas to study at Tarleton State College, Texas A&M, and received a Master's Degree from Sam Houston State Teachers College in Huntsville. Gilbert taught Vocational Ag for 30 years. In Aspermont he taught the first integrated class in the State of Texas. He taught at Olden from 1954-1970 and at Cisco from 1970-1985. After retiring he worked on the restoration of the original Conrad Hilton Hotel in Cisco, and later became known as "Mr. Gilbert" at Wal-Mart in Eastland. He firmly believed if you couldn't find it there you probably didn't need it anyway. His proudest accomplishments were the lifelong relationships he maintained with former students. He loved gospel and western music and was happiest when he was singing. For years he led the singing at the Olden Baptist church, and could be found every Monday night singing at the Cisco Nursing Home with the "Monday Night Singers."
Gilbert was preceded in death by a younger brother and sister, and a grandchild, Jarrett Stacy. He is survived by children Gary Copeland and Nancy Harris, granddaughters Shelly Wallace and Ginger Bunn, and great grandchildren Haley and Hannah Wallace. We're certain he is now happily singing full time with a celestial choir.

Nell was born on December 10, 1928 to Leona and Coldon Papasan on a ranch near Ovalo, Texas. Nell was 84.
Nell married the late Conda O. Richards on May 1, 1949. They were married for 49 years. She and Conda were members of the GMC Travel Club and traveled nationwide in their GMC motorhome for many years. She lived on the Chadbourne Ranch near Bronte, Texas and in Ballinger, Texas.
Nell was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Bronte. She was also a proud member of the Coke County Red Hat Society and was an avid supporter of the Fort Chadbourne Foundation.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brother Jimmy Papasan, and her grandson Michael Thornhill.
Nell is survived by her three children; two sons, Brian Richards and wife, Cynthia of Lubbock, Garland Richards and wife, Lana of Fort Chadbourne, and one daughter, Sallie Richards of San Antonio. She is also survived by her sister, Patsy Fort, brothers Bobie Papasan and David Papasan. Grandchildren include Conda Richards and wife Tami, Chuck Boecking and wife Monique, Alisa Plumley and husband Steve, Brent Boecking and wife Anna, Sharla Littlefield and husband Les, Neil Boecking and wife Melanie, Michelle Kiser and husband Beau, Sarah Foster and husband Chuck, Jade Angel and husband Kenneth, and Cody Moore.
The family would like to thank her caregivers, Kim Kenner and Becky Watson, Odyssey Hospice and the staff at Bronte Health and Rehab Center for taking care of Nell.
Graveside services will be held at 3:00 pm on Sunday, August 18 at Fort Chadbourne Cemetery in Bronte. Memorials may be made to the Fort Chadbourne Foundation at 651 Fort Chadbourne Road, Bronte, Texas 76933. Arrangements are with Lange Funeral Home in Ballinger.

18 Aug - UPDATE ON Nick Barton:
Nick is doing wonderful today. I just left his room and he was awake and looking around the room. I asked him to squeeze my hand and he responded with a squeeze. He continues to become more coherent day by day! Thank you all for your thoughts, prayers and contributions! Provision for the family has been continued to be met. Thank you.
The talk today is possibly moving Nick out of ICU. We will keep everyone posted.
Keep the prayers coming!!!!On Saturday September 21, 2013 the Trent V.F.D. is going to have a cook off. At this cook off they will have a benefit booth set up for Nick Barton to help pay for his hospital bills. 15 Aug - UPDATE ON NICKS PROGRESS:
Talking to Nick's night nurse and she has been giving some great news that needs to be passed on. Nick is doing better and better. He continues to open his eyes and acknowledge people's presence in the room. He is moving his right side quiet a bit. His vitals have been good. They have taken him off of the Dopamine drip and IV pain medications. As of righ...t now he is just receiving antibiotics IV. The hope is to have him extubated by the end of this weekend. His chest x-ray today came back showing congestion in his right lung, so he is currently receiving CPT(chest percussion treatment) to help break up the mucus and make sure that when he wakes up fully that he will be ready to be extubated.
13 Aug - THIS IS A POST FROM SWEETWATER FIRE DEPARTMENT PAGE THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!Nick is on a cooling pad to speed the healing process, a 5 lead Cardiac monitor, he has a central line back in place after he removed the first one, he has a soft cast on his right ankle and right wrist, he is still intubated, he has a feeding tube and a inter cranial pressure sensor.
All the signs show he is young, strong, and determined to get better. He makes purposeful movements with his hand and reacts to his wife's voice. He has thousands of people praying for him and his family is by his side as often as they can be with ICU visitation policy. One of his brothers has been by his side since he arrived at the hospital and we have no plans of leaving anytime soon.
Thanks you so much for all the support and prayers for our injured brother.
All we can do now is wait patiently for him to heal and come back to us.
An update on Nick's condition this morning. Throughout the night his blood pressure dropped into the low 100's systolic. To increase the perfusion to his brain they are starting him on a Dopamine drip. This will increase his blood pressure by making his heart contract stronger. Nick pulled his arterial line which the Dr's had placed to monitor his blood pressure closer. They will be replacing this... today. Nick is going to get some blood this morning due to some lab values trending downward. These labs are not critical, the Dr's just want to give him a boost. Yesterday they started hypothermic therapy which decreases Nick's body temperature to promote healing. They are continuing this today. Lastly Nick received some medications to promoted a bowel movement. A couple of interventions today to support Nick's healing. As always please continue sending your prayers. Any note of encouragement is welcome.
12 Aug - Nick is doing well today. A couple of updates for everyone. His CT came back showing that the procedure yesterday is doing its job with relieving pressure and he has no mid line shift now. His vitals have been very good. They placed an internal ICP (inter cranial pressure) monitor that allows the nursing staff to watch his pressures closely, which they have been good thus far. Also, today they are... going to place a vest on him that vibrates to loosen some congestion that Nick has in his left lung. To help with the whole healing process they are going to try to keep his temperature at 96 degrees which allows the body to heal easier. All in all some great news today. Please send continued prayers for Nick, Chelsea and the entire family.

Ronnie Bethel age 65 of Coleman, Texas passed from this life on Monday, July 8, 2013 at 10:30am at his residence in Coleman.
Services will be Thursday at 2:00pm at Henderson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. James Teel officiating. Interment will be at the Dewey Cemetery. Family visitation will be Wednesday from 6:00 till 7:00 pm at Henderson Funeral Home.
He was born Ronald Harold Bethel on February 26, 1948 in East Chicago, Indiana to the late Lonnie and Myrtie Howard Bethel. Ronnie was raised in Jim Ned where he graduated from Jim Ned High School. He has been a resident of Coleman for 25 years moving here from Winters. On February 24, 2003 Ronnie married Beckey Stewart in Coleman, Texas and they celebrated ten years of marriage. He served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Ronnie was a member of the Baptist church and was a carpenter and also worked for the City of Coleman.

FORT WORTH -- Leonard "Clark" McDonald, 71, passed away Saturday, July 6, 2013.
Service: 3:30 p.m. Thursday in Greenwood Chapel. Interment: 2:30 p.m. Friday in Evergreen Bundrant Cemetery, Purmela, Texas. Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Greenwood Funeral Home.
Clark was born May 16, 1942 in San Antonio. He graduated from Jim Ned High School in Tuscola, Texas in 1960, and attended Tarleton State University where he met his wife, Bonnie. He and Bonnie were married one year and one day when they received their biggest blessing, daughter Melody. He joined the Carpenter's Union in 1963 and was a member of Carpenter's Local Union #1822 now known as Carpenter's Local Union #429. He served numerous positions within the union including that of Business Agent. He earned his fifty year pin in April 2013.
Clark lived life to the fullest and enjoyed his many friendships. He loved his three grandchildren and could often be seen at his grandchildren's sporting and other special events. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Survivors: Wife of 50 years, Bonnie; daughter, Judge Melody (Edward "Chip") Wilkinson; grandchildren, Edward "Ned," Elizabeth and Emily Wilkinson; brother, Marlen McDonald (Maureen) of Indian Wells, Calif.; sister, Marilyn (Ray) Brown of Grand Saline, Texas; sister, Jeanette Flowers of Dallas; and numerous other family and friends.

Josie Hicks, 89, passed away on Tuesday July 2, 2013 at a local nursing facility. A funeral service is scheduled for 1:30pm Friday, July 5, 2013 at the Ovalo Baptist Church, with Marcy Grun officiating. Funeral services directed by Fry~Bartlett Funeral Home, Tuscola. Josie's family will receive friends from 4 to 6pm Thursday, July 4, 2013 at the funeral home.
Josie was born on May 16, 1924 in Moro to Earnest and Minnie (Shaffer) Reid. She grew up in the Moro and southern Taylor county area. She graduated high school in 1941. She married Bud Hicks in January 17, 1942. They were married for 64 years until his death in 2006.
Josie and Bud settled in the Tuscola area where he worked as a barber and she worked as a stay at home mother and later worked for Timex and Dry manufacturing in Winters.
Josie loved to work, sitting idle was not in her daily vocabulary, from working at her daily job, to working in her yard and garden, Josie was always on the move. When she was not working in her garden she was often found visiting friends, writing and sending cards to family and friends or teaching Sunday School.
Josie was the oldest of the six children in her family and she was always taking care of her family, and it was her family that was the dearest to her.
She is survived by a daughter, Paula Josey and husband Colin of Dallas, son Gary Hicks of Abilene, daughter in law Cynthia Hicks of Smith's Station, Alabama, sisters Ellen Walters and husband Cal of Moro, Ethel Grun and husband Russell of Moro, and Leola Allmand and husband J. W. of Ovalo, brother Verlon and wife Doris of Abilene, sister in law Ada Reid of Winters, grand children Avel and Monica Hicks, great-grand children Addilynn and Dominic.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Clyde Reid.
The family would like to express gratitude for the loving care that Josie received at Covenant Place and at Northern Oaks.

Travis Ruben Box, 80, passed away Saturday, June 8, 2013 at Hendrick Medical Center. Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at the Abilene Funeral Home Chapel of Hope, 3349 N. 12th Street with Elder Hulan Bass officiating. Burial will follow at the Tuscola Cemetery in Tuscola directed by Abilene Funeral Home.
Travis Ruben Box was born February 14, 1933 in Shep, Texas and was the fourth of five sons born to Robert and Nellie Box. Travis married his high school sweetheart, Mary Lou Brewer, on December 6, 1953. To this union were born three children, Ronnie Wayne, Sherry Lynn and Cathy Elaine. Travis was a dedicated and loving husband and father.
He joined the Army in January 1954 and honorably served his country as a Private First Class in the US Army Artillery, Battery D of the 93rd Artillery Battalion during the Korean War. During his service, Travis was involved in secret atomic explosives testing in White Sands, New Mexico. And he completed his service in Alaska in 1956.
Travis was a plumber by trade. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and gardening. But above all, he loved his family and his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He was a member of the Abilene Primitive Baptist Church.
Travis left this world of sin and sorrow on June 8, 2013 to go home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Bobby Wayne, S. V. and Troy Box.
Travis is survived by his loving wife, Mary Lou; his son Ronnie Wayne; his daughters Sherry Lynn and husband Barry Brown, and Cathy Elaine and husband Jim Singleton; and four grandchildren Samantha Demetra Singleton, James John Singleton, Courtney Arisha Brown and Rachel Charis Brown; and his brother Sammy Box.

J.C. McKee, 96, of Abilene, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, May 25, 2013 at his home. Graveside services will be at held 3:30 pm on Sunday, May 26, 2013, in the McBee Cemetery. Rev. Louis Johnson will officiate. The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 3:00 pm, prior to the graveside, at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road.
J.C. was born August 14, 1916 in the Merkel Community, the son of the late Jim and Lucy McKee. He grew up and graduated from school in Ovalo, Texas where he met and married Melba Cochran on July 4, 1937. During World War II, he served in the Merchant Marines and was a Ham radio operator. After the war he worked for Sears where he managed the service department until his retirement at the age of 55. He and Melba traveled extensively after his retirement.
J.C. was a member of North Park Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Lucy McKee; his wife, Melba McKee; and one sister, Margaret Nelson.
J.C. is survived by one sister, Lois Campbell; one son, Billy McKee and wife Jo Ann; one granddaughter, Lessa Wahlenmaier and husband Jim; two great-granddaughters, Dr. Lacey Clawson and husband James Clawson, Jr. and their daughter Aspen; Kandise Willingham and husband Chris and their daughters, Lilly Harbin, Tatum and son Ryder Willingham; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to North Park Baptist Church, 1525 Anson Ave., Abilene, TX 79601.

The last class of Tuscola Tigers, graduating class of 1947, held a reunion at Al's Bar-B-Que in Abilene, April 27th. Betty Sue Hammonds Allison is their class President and she did a wonderful job getting things together. Evelyn Hill Voelkel from this class, moved to Abilene and she had five generations with her. The Tuscola class of 1947 opens their reunions for anyone who attended school with them during the Tuscola School District era. What a great alumni celebration!!

Venita J. Brewer Gaston, 76, of San Angelo, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family and friends on March 23, 2013 in San Angelo.
Funeral services will be held 11:00am Saturday April 27, 2013 at West Angelo Church of Christ with Alvis Fisher of West Angelo Church of Christ, officiating. Burial will follow at 3:00pm at Shep Cemetery. Arrangements are by Robert Massie Funeral Home.
Venita J. Brewer Gaston was born in Abilene, TX to John Newton and Ima Elva Brewer on January 27, 1937. She went to school at Tuscola, TX. She married Kenneth Bob Gaston, her childhood sweetheart, on August 16, 1956, in Abilene, TX. She graduated from South Taylor High School now known as Jim Ned High School. She worked her way up in the banking industry and retired as a Vice-President for Wells Fargo Bank. She was a member of West Angelo Church of Christ, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the United Daughters of the Confederacy. She spent much of her time traveling and doing genealogy research. She has spent summers in Alaska visiting, sight seeing and working in one of the resort hotel gift shops near Denali National Park. Genealogy research has taken her through Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia and even Alaska where she has met previously unknown relatives and made countless new friends.
Venita J. Brewer Gaston is preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Kenneth Bob Gaston.
Venita J. Brewer Gaston is survived by Brenda Watts and husband Jerry of Hylton, TX, Belinda Hogan and husband Don of Seminole, TX, Robert Gaston of Soldotna, AK Rebecca Dewbre and husband Jim of Breckenridge, seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and friends.

I plan on arranging some type of reunion for those of us who graduated between 1980-1984 etc. Particularly for those of us who knew Ricky Adams. for those who did not know, he passed away Friday, April 5th. It will be a time to see each other and reflect on the times we all shared and as a memorial for Ricky. This will not be a formal organized event... we may just all meet up at the Bar BQ Barn or something and it probably won't happen until sometime in June. Shirley Jean Hudson, 82, passed away on Sunday, April 14, 2013, at a local medical center in Abilene. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., today, Tuesday, April 16, 2013 at Tuscola Baptist Church, Tuscola, Texas with Brother DeWayne Bush officiating, under the direction of Community Memorial Funeral Home, 1443 North 2nd Street, Abilene, Texas.
Shirley was born on February 13, 1931 in Doland, South Dakota to John and Annetta Scovell Jansen. She was employed as Lawn city secretary. Shirley volunteered for the Granny Squad, Red Cross, Abilene Independent School District, and worked as a librarian at Jim Ned School.
She was preceded in death by a son, John Hudson; a daughter, Pamela Butner; a brother, Roland Jansen; a grandson, Travis Hudson; and a granddaughter, Katherine Terrell.
Survivors include a son, Gary Hudson and wife, Elaine; two daughters, Suzanne Bradshaw and husband, Steve, and Annetta Hudson; two brothers, John Jansen and Veryl Jansen; three sisters, Linda Thiesen, Vallerie Abernathy, and Cheryl VanZee; grandchildren, Sharlena Page, Christina Hudson, Joseph Butner Jr., Sharon Bartolo, Eric Bradshaw, Zachery Bradshaw, Sara Boyles, and David O'Shields; and nineteen great-grandchildren.
Our sweet mama and grandmother, Shirley Hudson, has gone to be with the Lord.

James Oran Egger, 81, passed from this life on Friday, April 12, 2013 to be with his Lord, family and friends. A funeral service is scheduled for 2:00pm Sunday, April 14th, 2013 at the Lawn Baptist Church with Price Mathieson and Kenneth Jordan officiating, directed by Fry~Bartlett Funeral Home. A visitation was held Saturday evening, April 13th, 2013 at the funeral home.
Oran was born in Brownwood, on December 25, 1931 to Ben and Ruby (Jeffery) Egger. Before the age of one he and his family moved to the Nolan Community where his family operated a dairy and beef cattle stock farm. He graduated from Divide High School in 1951. He married his high school sweetheart and lifelong love of 58 years, Gloria Jean Ensminger on May 25, 1951 at Nolan.
Oran continued his education becoming a Texas Tech Red Raider receiving his BS Degree of Education in 1954 and a Master's degree in 1959. Upon graduating in 1954, Oran applied at only one school for his Vocational Agricultural teaching job, which was at Lawn ISD. He taught at Lawn for three years until consolidation with Tuscola in 1957. He became the Jim Ned Vocational AG teacher for the next thirty years, then became the elementary principal at the Jim Ned Buffalo Gap Campus for the following 10 years. During his teaching career, he taught his son, daughter, daughter-in-law, and two of his four grandchildren, along with hundreds of other students in the Jim Ned District.
Oran was an active member of the Lawn Baptist church for 58 years; serving as a deacon for 50 years, and a Sunday school teacher for many of those years.
Oran enjoyed traveling with his family, friends, and especially his grandchildren. Oran and Gloria enjoyed pulling their camper all over the United States. Of course he enjoyed anything that was outdoors including fishing, farming, and ranching. He was always happiest when Gloria was right alongside.
Oran was preceded in death by his wife Gloria (2010), and his parents. He is survived by his son Stan Egger and wife Nan of Tuscola, daughter Ora Jean Lee and husband Jimmie of Seymour, brother R.B. Egger of Atlanta, Georgia, sister Glenda Davis of Gallup, New Mexico, grandchildren, Cole Egger of Dallas, Jessica Baldwin and husband Scott of Dallas, Jill Stewart and husband Cody of Saint Jo, and Jacie Lee Abney of Lewisville. He is also survived by two great grandchildren, Paylin Grace Stewart and Croix Alexander Baldwin.
Pallbearers for Oran are the Deacons of Lawn Baptist Church, J.W. Allmand, Clay Shott, Randy Doan, Doug Jones, Rodney Davis, Keith Whitehurst, Jerry Adams, Randal Brown, Ricky Walker, Joel Terry, and Steve Stogsdill. Honorary pallbearers are, Amos Aldridge, Leo Dennis, Lee Hamilton, and Bill Thornton.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First State Bank in Tuscola, designating either to Lawn Baptist Church or the Oran Egger Agricultural Scholarship Fund for Jim Ned Students.

Update 4/12/13 afternoon: The family will have a private service in Gatesville where they will spread Ricky's ashes. Ricky battled colon cancer for about two years and his mother Betty, took care of him in her home in Abilene for the last 10 months of his life.

Oleta M. Whitaker, 81, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 4, 2013 in Abilene.
Services will be at The Hamil Family Funeral Home Chapel, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road in Abilene at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April 6, with Rev. Stan Allcorn officiating. Burial will follow in McBee Cemetery in South Taylor County. Visitation will be 6 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
She was born in Jones County, Texas on August 9, 1931 to Emmett and Lillie Whitaker. Oleta was a small child when her family moved to rural South Taylor County where she grew up and graduated from South Taylor County High School in 1948. Oleta attended Hardin-Simmons University for three years.
Oleta began work at Western Cotton Oil Company which became Paymaster Feeds, and later became Cargill Industries. She was a dedicated employee for 39 years. She was a member of Pioneer Drive Baptist Church in Abilene.
Oleta was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Joe Ray Whitaker. She is survived by cousins, Betty Marsh and family and Ruby Kinnard and family, many distant cousins, and nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her close childhood friends, Mitzy and Don Hart.
Oleta requested that any memorial donations be made to The Salvation Army, 1726 Butternut St., Abilene, TX 79602, or the donor's favorite charity.

James David McClure, 78, of Ovalo, Texas, died Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at an Abilene care center.
David was born in Caps, Texas on September 10, 1934. He graduated from Eula High School in 1953 and received his Bachelor of Education from McMurry University. He married Rosa Lee Brock on March 5, 1955 in Eula, Texas. He was a member of Tuscola United Methodist Church and had been a teacher and coach in Jim Ned Schools for 29 years.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Austin Earl McClure and Ella Virginia "Virgie" McClure, and brother, Buck McClure.
Survivors include his wife, Rosa Lee McClure of Ovalo; four children and their spouses, Mikey McClure and Cleone, Rick McClure and Donna, Jeff McClure and Robbi, and Melinda Ikeler and Rick all of Ovalo; sisters, Mildred Warren of Eula, and Nancy Rogers and husband Bill of Cedar Gap, Texas; 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 30, at Tuscola United Methodist Church with Marcy Grun and Ryan Goodwin officiating. Don Foster, 83, passed away Friday, March 22, 2013 in Buffalo Gap, Texas.
The son of Cary Virginia (Gardner) and Sollie Foster, Don was born on November 28, 1929 in Happy Valley, Texas near Wingate. He served in the U. S. Army in Korea with the 45th Infantry Division. He was the recipient of three Bronze Service Stars, the National Defense Service Medal and the Combat Infantry Badge. In 1977 Don moved from Gardner, Illinois to Buffalo Gap, Texas where he retired from the City of Buffalo Gap Water Department. He was a member of First Baptist Church - Buffalo Gap.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Comer Foster, in 2008; parents, Sollie and Cary Foster; and four brothers.
Don is survived by his son, Jerry Don Foster and wife Andrea of Buffalo Gap; daughter, Donna Jean Schick and husband Roy of Joliet, Illinois; five grandchildren, Tanner Kaleb Foster, Dillon Kyle Foster, Jenna Nicole Foster, Christy Lynn Lynch and Brian Jeffery Schick; three great-grandchildren, Jordon Schick, Alyssa Schick and Liam Gabriel Foster; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Roy W. Peoples, 86, passed away on Thursday, March 14, 2013. A graveside service will be held at 2:00pm Sunday, March 17, 2013 at McBee Cemetery on C. R. 614 in southern Taylor County. Mike Greenfield will officiate. A visitation will be held on Saturday, March 16, 2013 from 4 to 6 in the afternoon at the funeral home, directed by Fry~Bartlett Funeral Home, Tuscola.
Roy was the son of James and Iva Mae Peoples. He was born on November 11, 1926 in the Rogers community. He started school in Lawn and graduated from Ovalo High School in 1944. Immediately after graduation Roy joined the United States Navy and served in the Philippines on P.T. Boat 1132 as a radio/sonar operator.
He married Patsy Marshall in June of 1946. They raised a son and two daughters in Abilene while he worked in sales for Delta Solvents, retiring as general manager in 1991.
He married Iva Early, in 1999 and for several years they enjoyed traveling the United States in their RV.
Roy was a member of the American Legion and of the VFW. He loved his family, the Texas Rangers, Dallas Cowboys, and golf. He loved the casinos and a "good meal."
He is survived by his wife Iva Peoples of Abilene, son Ronnie Peoples and wife Beverly of Abilene, daughters Sandy West and husband Jim of Abilene, Karen Choat and husband John of Tuscola, sister-in-law Lota Marshall of Abilene, eight grandchildren, Jeff and Eric Peoples, Mandy Benedix, Tammy Tyler, Angela Toomer, Tracy Bowermaster, Amber McMullen, and Andy Choat, nine great-grandchildren Maegan, Alex, Zach, Madison, Mackenzie, Kaitlyn, Garrett, Katie and Brady, and one great great-grandaughter Kendalyn Jae, born on the same hour Roy passed.
He is also survived by his step-son Troy Early and wife Mona of Richmond, Texas, step-grandchildren Tricia Davis, Nicole Waggoner, Desiree Bourgue, two step-great-grandchildren Noah and Maya Waggoner, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife Patsy in 1994, adopted parents, and his birth parents Robert and Samathia Williams, seven brothers and three sisters.

Elsie Leona Carpenter passed away Sunday, February 24, 2013 at a local nursing home at the age of 105 years, after a long illness. Visitation will be Tuesday, February 26th from 5 - 7 p.m. in North's Memorial Chapel, 242 Orange St. A funeral service will be Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. in Southern Hills Church of Christ Chapel, 3666 Buffalo Gap Rd. with Phil Ware, Richard Melton, Joe McKissick and Manley Borden officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Memorial Park, 5750 Hwy. 277 South, under the direction of North's Funeral Home.
The daughter of Robert E. and Josie Cheek, Elsie was born on November 15, 1907 in Fordyce, Arkansas where she was raised and graduated from High School where she later taught school there. She moved to Abilene, Texas in 1928. She married Owen Carpenter December 23, 1931 in Abilene, Texas. She was a Charter member of Southern Hills Church of Christ. Elsie was a devoted church member who loved her church family. She worked for the Western Union in Arkansas and in Texas. She also worked for the Abilene Public Schools in the lunch room at Lincoln Middle School for three years. Her last job was with Hendrick Hospital for fifteen years, caring for the new born babies until her retirement at age 70. She loved crocheting and other hand work. She loved to work outside in her flower garden and loved to cook for her family and most of all she loved to spoil her grandchildren.
Elsie was preceded in death by her parents; Robert E. and Josie Cheek. Her husband, Owen Carpenter. One grandson, Wayne Douglas Carpenter. One great-grandson Lucas Michael Carpenter . Two great-grandchildren, Christopher Wood and Valerie Croy. Five brothers, Sam, Albert, Archie, Bill and Herbert Cheek. One sister, Val King.
Survivors include; three sons, Jack D. of Abilene, Larry D., Doug and wife Theda of Buffalo Gap. One daughter, Jean Wood of Abilene. Grandchildren; Pattie Vallery and husband Bobbie, Greg Wood and wife Sherry, Mark Wood and wife Jennifer, Dennis Carpenter and wife Marie, Joe, Mike and Tracy Carpenter, Don Carpenter and wife Twyla, Dwain Carpenter and wife Lalena, Thomas Carpenter and wife Cortnie, Owen Carpenter and BJ Blosser and wife Jodi. Legendary football coach Bill Anderson passed peacefully from this life on February 20, 2013 at the age of 87.
Billy Joe was born in Smith Springs, Texas in Erath County on July 20, 1925 to Madera Maude (Crunk) and Fred Anderson. His early years were shaped by life on a family farm during the Great Depression. His father worked to subsidize the farm at a feed mill in Stephenville, and, after his father bought the mill, the family moved into town where Billy Joe ("Blub") attended high school and played football. Joining countless other young kids from farms, small towns, and cities across America in the war effort, Blub enlisted as soon as he was eligible in 1943. The war ended before "Tex" was sent overseas, but those years in the Army Air Corps - training in West Virginia, Wisconsin, Florida, and finally California as a tail gunner on the B-29 - were some of his most memorable. After the war, Bill came home with his new wife to attend Tarleton Junior College. Offered a chance to play football at what was then George Pepperdine College in Los Angeles, Bill was happy to return to California and renew many of his war time friendships. In his first season, the fledging Pepperdine team, composed largely of ex-GI's, was named the 1947 National Small College Champions.
After three seasons and his graduation in 1950, Bill brought his family back to Texas and began a coaching career that spanned more than half a century. Greatly loved and highly respected, Coach molded young lives with tenures at Stamford, Rising Star, South Taylor, Graham, Palestine, Riviera, and Hereford. In his eleven years as a high school head coach, he coached four district champions and three runner-up teams. People knew him as a superb educator, mentor, motivator, role model, and coach. He especially loved the people of Stamford and his beloved Bulldogs. Big Bill Anderson was a major force in Stamford's four state championships and multi playoff wins in the '50s and '60s. Colleges recruited him, and he coached at Abilene Christian, West Texas State, Cisco Junior College, Howard Payne, and Tarleton. At Howard Payne, he was blessed to be able to coach with his son, Bobby.
Bill won numerous teaching and coaching awards, but the two that meant the most to him were the dedication of the Stamford football stadium as the Bill Anderson Stadium and his induction into the Texas High School Coaches Hall of Honor.
While Bill loved football, nothing was more important to him than his family. Family gatherings at his place on the Colorado River near the Suspension Bridge at Regency were his greatest pleasure. Playing in the river and the waterfalls, walking together across the bridge, and canoeing trips are etched in our minds and hearts forever. He would always say, "Let's go make some memories!" We did...thanks Papaw.
Bill is preceded in death by his son Charles (Chuck) Anderson, wife and mother of his children, Rosalie (Raino) Anderson, wife Peggy (Gamblin) Anderson, his sister Martha LaRue, brothers Robert Hicks and Arris, and his parents.
Survivors include his wife Helen, as well as his daughter Kathleen Barnett and husband Jerry of Austin, son Bobby Anderson and wife Orinda of Bangs, daughter-in-law Terri Anderson of China Springs. His grandchildren include Chloe Barnett of Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, Ryan Anderson of Cisco, Robert Anderson and Richard Anderson of Bangs, Lorianna Anderson of Austin, Charlcie and husband B.J. Eythe of China Springs, and Matthew Anderson of China Springs. Bill was especially proud to have known his great grandson, Jaxon Charles Eythe of China Springs. Bill's extended family includes his brother-in-law, Bobby Gamblin and wife Martha of Arlington, and his wife Helen's children, Larry Benningfield and Vicki Moraw.
The funeral will be held at 3:00 p.m. Monday, February 25, 2013 at the St. John's United Methodist Church in Stamford with Eugene Weldon officiating. Burial will follow at the Highland Memorial Cemetery in Stamford under the direction of Tankersley Funeral Home of Stamford. The family will be receiving friends at the church on Monday from 1:00 p.m. until service time.

Mrs. Johnnie Duncan, age 87, of Colorado City and formerly of Odessa, died Sunday night in a local hospital. Graveside services will be at 2:00 PM Friday in the Sunset Memorial Gardens in Odessa with Rev. Paul Smith officiating. Services are under the care and direction of Kiker-Seale Funeral Home.
Mrs. Duncan was born November 11, 1925 in Winters, Texas to Arnett and Marie Hudson Weeks and had lived in Colorado City for the past 6 years. She married Weldon Wesley Duncan on September 19, 1947 in Lawn, Texas. He preceded her in death on July 6, 1997. She was a retired assistant post master in Penwell, Texas for many years.
She is survived by 2 daughters: Sandra and husband, William Wood of Murfreesboro, TN and Rita and husband, Richard McKinney of Colorado City; a sister, Peggy and husband, Bobby Satterwhite of Lawn, Texas; a sister-in-law, Patsy Weeks of Bangs, Texas; 6 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews.
She is also preceded in death by her parents, a son, Dale Duncan and a brother, Arnett Weeks.
The family will receive friends 6-8 PM Thursday at Kiker-Seale Funeral Home in Colorado City.

Patsy Estelle Warford, 76, passed away on Thursday February 7, 2013 in Austin. A graveside service is scheduled 2:00pm Saturday, February, 16, 2013, at McBee Cemetery. Directed by Fry~Bartlett Funeral Home, Tuscola. A visitation will be held at the funeral home from 12:00pm until 1:45pm Saturday.
Pasty was born in Brown County to Howard Clay and Tennie Marie (Wilson) Rountree on May 23, 1936, the eldest of four "Rountree Girls". Both the Wilsons and Rountrees were long time Brown County residents. Patsy attended various schools around Brownwood before her family moved to Lawn in 1951. She met Charles Warford, and they became engaged while in high school. They were married in 1955, as college students of Howard Payne University. Patsy graduated from Howard Payne University in 1957 and moved back to Lawn. She began teaching in 1959 in Lawn, after the birth of her children Jeffory Loy on Christmas Day 1957, and Patti Jo on March 14, 1961. Patsy continued to teach next in Merkel, then at Abilene State School, and one year in Amarillo. The next twenty-seven years she taught at the Round Rock School District in the Special Education Department. Patsy had a strong belief that every child has potential, and she did everything she could to see that her students reached that potential. She retired in 1998 and spent the remaining years enjoying her grandchildren.
Patsy is survived by her husband Charles of Austin, children Jeffory Warford of Miami, Florida, Patti Jo Cole and husband Jayson of Austin, grandchildren Audrey, Ben, Hannah, Natalie, William, and Sophia Cole all of Austin, Justin Michael Warford of Florida, sisters Coleta Reed of Abilene, Ann Hearn of Midland, and Kathleen Taylor of Granbury, numerous nephews and nieces, grand nephews and grand nieces.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Patsy wanted to thank all of the people that have been a part of her life especially her ex-students and their parents. Various doctors have helped Patsy through difficult times which included: Drs. B. K. Morrison, George Williford Jr. and Thomas Blevins.

Please keep Charles Warford and family in your prayers at this time. A tragic accident took the life of Patsy Warford, Thursday evening during a fire at their home in Williamson Co., TX. Patsy Rountree Warford was a Science teacher at Jim Ned in 1959-1960. Charles is a 1954 Lawn Longhorns graduate.
There will not be a funeral service for Patsy...A Life Celebration will be conducted tomorrow, Feb. 12th, 5-8 pm. at the Rattan Creek Community Center, 7617 Elkhorn Mountain Trail, Jollyville, TX 78729. A seperate Life Celebration will be held in Tuscola on Saturday, Feb. 16th...more information to come.
Charles shared his Lawn yearbooks (1947-1954) with me so I could scan them for the Preservation. We have been missing each other with our timing for the yearbooks to be returned to him. He lost his most precious wife and most everything in this fire. I will attend Patsy's life celebration tomorrow and will return these special memories to him. Please pray a prayer for comfort and peace.

Bertie Mae (Nancy) Hancock Fleming, 96, passed away on Monday, January 28 at a long term care facility in Cedar Hill. A graveside service is scheduled for 3:00 pm Saturday, February 2, 2013 at Rogers Cemetery in Southern Taylor County, Directed by Fry~Bartlett Funeral Home, Tuscola. A visitation for family and friends will be held prior to the graveside service starting at 1:00 pm in the funeral home.
Nancy Fleming was born on March 28, 1916 to Andrew and Sudie (Northington) Hancock at home in southern Taylor County. She attended school in Rogers. She married James Fleming on May 15, 1941 in Ardmore Ok.
During World War II she worked in Grand Prairie as an instrument inspector for North American Aviation and later worked at Abilene State School. She was a member of the Tuscola Methodist Church.
Survivors include daughter Linda Stottlemire and husband Tim of Maypearl, grandchildren, Sheri Miskimon and husband Rick, Jason Stottlmire and wife Jill, all of Maypearl, great-grandchildren R.J. and Elizabeth Miskimon, Cole and Marissa Stottlemire, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband James William Fleming (1976), seven sisters, and three brothers.
The family will be meeting at the old Hawkins Homestead following the service.

Mary Ravinell Mayfield, 89, passed way Tuesday, January 17, 2013 at a local medical facility. A funeral service is scheduled for 11:00am, Monday, January 21, 2013 at the Tuscola Baptist Church, directed by Fry~Bartlett Funeral Home, Tuscola. A visitation for family and friends will be held on Sunday January 20, 2013 from 5:00pm to 8:00pm at the funeral home.
Ravinell was born on March 9, 1923 to Gorden and Pauline (Davis) Smith in Anson. She attended Anson schools, graduating from Anson High School. She married C. D. Mayfield, Jr. on March 22, 1941 in Anson.
Ravinell held two things equally close to her heart, her relationship with the Lord and her family, A devout woman of God, it was a rare Sunday that you did not find her fellowshiping with what she considered her second family, the other congregants at her church, of which there where many. She devoted her life to her family, raising two children and in many ways her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She always offered a loving home, there was always a home cooked meal and all the love she could give no matter the hour. She filled each of one in her family with warmth, love and kindness that will endure and give us a lasting memory in each of the our hearts.
She was a lifetime member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary in Abilene and a was a member of the Brownwood Primitive Baptist Church.
Ravinell is survived by her son Dave Mayfield and wife Marilyn of Tuscola, daughter Christene Funderburg and husband Roland of Abilene, sisters Doris Neill of Irving, and Fay Burleson of San Angelo, grand children Andrea Bailey, Marcus Mayfield, Melissa Mayfield, and Sheri Thomason.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband C.D. Mayfield Jr. (1988), brothers C.G. and Clifford Smith, and sister Gardenia Pilley.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to her great grandson Christopher Crouse and his wife Lydia for the love and care they gave Ravinell for the past ten years. Words can never say how much it means to us

Edna Benoist Taylor, 91, went Home on the morning train January 15, 2013. Visitation will be at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 19, at Jim Ned Valley Church of Christ in Tuscola, with service to follow at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Lakeview Cemetery in Winters.
Known affectionately as MiMi or MawMaw, Edna was born on November 13, 1921, in Lampasas. She married Morris Harold Taylor on December 22, 1940. She lived and worked as a beautician in Abilene while Harold was in the Army. After living in Wilmer and Pampa, they moved to the Jim Ned area and settled in Ovalo in 1965. She worked for Sunshine Advertising as a secretary for about 32 years. During some of that time she helped her husband by making pies for Taylor's Cafe; in Lawn. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Betty Jane Price on March 19, 1979, and her husband, Morris Harold Taylor on June 30, 1991. Her survivors include one son, Doug Taylor and wife Jane of Oplin; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one step-grandchild; one great-great-grandchild; nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews, and countless friends.

Veda Joyce Jones Bynum was born on September 30, 1925 in Tuscola, Texas to Marvin Augusta and Linnie Laura Jones. She graduated from Tuscola High School in 1943 and served her country during the Second World War by working at Camp Barkley outside of Abilene.
Veda married Raymond Hoyt Bynum of Potosi on October 12, 1946. They lived in Potosi, Texas where they were both active members of the Potosi United Methodist Church. She worked for twenty years at the Abilene State School as a nursing assistant. She also worked as an elementary cafeteria monitor for the Abilene Independent School District for eight years. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, and canning fresh fruits and vegetables and spending time with family.
She is preceded in death by her beloved husband of fifty years, Hoyt, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. M.A. Jones, four brothers, Rex Jones, Burl Jones, Westal Jones, and Garland Jones, and one sister, Modelle Powell. She is also preceded in death by close family friend, Chelsa Holder of Weatherford.
She is survived by two daughters, Laura Bynum of Weatherford, and Toni Blanchard and her husband, Gerald, of Potosi.She is also survived by four grandchildren: Gerald Blanchard, Jr. of Syracuse, New York, Jennifer Blanchard Connors and her husband, Shawn, of Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey, Ashley Blanchard Stewart and her husband, Harper, of Graham, and Aryn Blanchard Standeford and her husband, Richard, of New Braunfels. The lights of her life were her great-grandchildren: Grace Stewart, Sydney Blanchard, Faith Stewart, Elisabeth Connors, and Harrison Standeford.She is survived by one sister, Nelda Lockley of Abilene, and two sisters-in-law, Mamie Bynum Gray and Pat Bynum, both of Abilene, as well as several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by close family friend, Bev Hogg of Weatherford.
Visitation will be Saturday, December 22, 2012 from 5:00 to 6:30 at North's Funeral Home in Abilene. Funeral services will be held Sunday, December 23, 2012 at 3 p.m. at Potosi United Methodist Church in Potosi, Texas. Internment will follow immediately after the service at the Potosi Cemetery. Pallbearers for the service include Gerald Blanchard, Bill Keys, Patrick Lloyd, Eric Rogers, Richard Standeford, and Harper Stewart. Honorary pallbearers include Gary Jones, Cleve Powell, Morris Wiltrout, Pete Bynum, and Tom Rigsby.

Royce Tonnie "Griff" Griffin, 75, passed away, at a local hospital, on January 7, 2013. Funeral Services will be held 10:00 a.m. Thursday, January 10, 2013 at Southwest Park Baptist Church, 2901 South 20th Street with Reverend Paul Matta, Reverend Mike Woodard and Chaplin Chris Hale officiating. Burial will follow in the Dewey Cemetery, directed by Abilene Funeral Home. A Visitation will be held from 6:00 until 8:00 Wednesday at Abilene Funeral Home, 3349 N. 12th Street.
Mr. Griffin was born January 17, 1937 on a farm in Ovalo, Texas to the late Tonnie and Gillie Griffin. He and his family moved to Abilene in 1946, where he graduated from Abilene High School, Class of 1955. He joined the U.S Army in 1956 and was stationed in Germany for two years. Royce then joined the Abilene Fire Department in November of 1958 and retired in January of 1987. Royce also installed drapes, mini blinds and custom window treatments. He married the love of his life Pat E. Casey Griffin on June 2, 1961. Royce touched the hearts of everyone he knew and will be greatly missed by all who were lucky enough to know him.
Survivors include, his wife of 51 years, Pat Griffin; two sons, Rick Griffin and wife, Lori of Blackwell, and Greg Griffin and wife, Casie of Abilene; three grandchildren, Darren and Marissa Griffin of Blackwell, and Harley Griffin of Abilene.
Royce was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Natha Kidd Townsend.
Pallbearers will be members of the Abilene Fire Department Color Guard.

Royann (Anne) Rogers, 74, went home to her Lord and Savior on December 17, 2012. She was known to many as Mother and Granny. The funeral service for Anne is scheduled for 2:00pm Friday, December 21, 2012 at the Ovalo Baptist Church in Ovalo, with Bro. Patrick Voce officiating, directed by Fry~Bartlett Funeral Home, Tuscola. A visitation for family and friends will be held on Thursday, December 20, 2012 from 5:00 to 7:00pm at the funeral home, 502 Kent Ave, Tuscola.
Anne was born August 18, 1938, to Roy and Kate Lee, in Crews, Texas. Anne married Gene Rogers on September 7, 1963. They raised a blended family of seven children. She was a remarkable woman who showered her husband, children and grandchildren with unconditional love.
Anne worked in the floral and gift industry owning From the Heart Country Florist and Ceramics in Tuscola, she retired in early 2000.
Anne welcomed everyone into her home, and that was the focal point for so many families. She was a gifted artist and her home was a direct reflection of her passion for creativity. It was always decorated in immaculate detail. Her home was always open and was a place of gathering and celebration for family and friends. Anne loved collecting antiques, dolls and other items, and her favorite was to collect Precious Moments figurines. Each of us will always have our own memories of Anne, Mother, or Granny that will live on in us. The Precious Moments figurines are sure to be a unifying bond for us and she will be forever loved by those that were blessed enough to be touched by her life.
She was preceded in death by her parents Roy and Kate Lee.
Anne is survived by her husband Gene. They were married 49 years.
She is also survived by a son Jody Lin Weaver and wife Amandry of Iraan, daughters Theresa Anne Kennemer and husband Steve of Winters, Dena Marie Souder of Omaha, Nebraska, Louanne Stanley and husband Micki of Brownwood, three step-daughters Tanna Jaquess of San Angelo, Lisa Marks and husband Ricky of Brownwood, and Gena King and husband Robert of Ballinger, a brother Freddie Lee of Ballinger, sisters Carolyn Martin and husband Billy Joe of Millersview, Donna Hedrick of Tuscola, twenty two grandchildren and twenty four great grandchildren.

Carl Dwain Bradshaw, 76, died Wednesday, November 21, 2012 at an Abilene medical center.
Born in the community of Guion near Bradshaw in Taylor County, Texas, Carl was the son of Nettie Aline (Overby) and Ernest Bradshaw, and attended school at South Taylor High School (now Jim Ned). For 17 years he was employed by Wylie ISD and was the heating and air conditioning technician. He was a Baptist.
A hardworking man, Carl always had a smile and was a sweet, kind person. He was a great "Papaw" and loved his grandchildren.
His mother, Nettie Aline Bradshaw, and two sisters, Janie Sorrell and Rita Remington, preceded him in death.
Carl is survived by his son, Carl Wayne Bradshaw and wife Dwana of Abilene; daughter, Kim McMillan and husband Mark of Abilene; sister, Linda Smith and husband Smitty of San Antonio; six grandchildren, Luke McMillan and wife Emily, Cole McMillan, Guy McMillan, Whitney Ice and husband Estebaan, Kelbie Bradshaw and Carlee Bradshaw; great-granddaughter, Tenley McMillan; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be 10 a.m. until 12 noon Saturday, November 24, 2012 at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road in Abilene. A graveside service will follow at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Potosi Cemetery with John Fanning officiating.

David Rann Reddell, 81, passed away Tuesday, December 4, 2012, at a local nursing center in Abilene. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, December 6, 2012, at Southwest Park Baptist Church with Mike Woodard officiating. Burial will follow in the Elliott-Hamil Garden of Memories Cemetery, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory Street, Abilene. The family will receive friends at a visitation from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home located at 542 Hickory Street.
David was born on July 9, 1931 to Arthur Rann and Viola Alice Zellner Reddell in Tuscola, TX. He was a lifelong resident of the big country and married Kathleen Carson on August 22, 1953 in the Elliott's Chapel which is now Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home on Hickory St. David was employed by the city of Abilene, dedicated to serving his community as a Fireman. He retired after 35 years of devoted service.
David was an avid outdoorsman and loved taking his kids and grandkids hunting and fishing. He was the type of man that could do anything. David was a member of Southwest Park Baptist Church and also served in the National Guard.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Kathleen; one son, Russell Alan Reddell; two sisters, Delores Woodson and Elwynn Roderick; and one brother, Mikey D. Reddell.
Survivors include two sons, Randy Reddell and wife, Karla of Abilene and Dennis Reddell and wife, Alicia, also of Abilene; one daughter-in-law, Sherry Reddell of Abilene; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

James Milton Tatum, 79, passed away Saturday, December 1, 2012 at Hendrick Medical Center. Services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at the Abilene Funeral Home Chapel of Hope, 3349 N. 12th Street. Pastor Paul Billiet of Ranchhouse Fellowship Cowboy Church in Merkel, where Milton and his family attended, will officiate. Burial will follow in Tuscola Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Milton was born November 2, 1933, in Tuscola to the late, Curtis Milton and Olivia Tatum. He graduated from South Taylor High School (Jim Ned) and joined the Abilene Fire Department in 1952, then retired in 1984, after 32 years of service.
Milton is survived by his wife of 60 years Shirley Ann; two sons, James Randall and Larry (wife Ramona); one daughter, Tracey Harvey, all of Abilene; two brothers, Don Curtis Tatum and Floyd Alton Tatum; seven grandsons and two granddaughters; twelve great grandchildren; and his two constant companions (dogs) J. R. and Charlie.

J.L. Edwards, Jr., of Abilene, Texas passed away on Friday, November 9, 2012 in Tulsa, Oklahoma after a courageous 17 year fight with Parkinson's disease.
Visitation will be from 5:00 - 7:00 PM on Tuesday, November 13, 2012 at Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road in Abilene.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, November 14, 2012 at First Baptist Church of Abilene. A private burial will follow at McBee Cemetery near Lawn.
J.L. was born in Lawn, TX to Jessel and Mary Edwards on February 15, 1935. He graduated Lawn High School in 1953 and then attended Hardin Simmons University, earning a BBA in 1957. He was drafted into the Army, stationed at Fort Bliss in El Paso, TX for 2 years where he served as Manager of Officer Records. J.L. returned to Abilene in 1960 beginning his 32 year career at West Texas Utilities. J.L served as Manager of Employee Benefits before retiring in 1992.
J.L. renewed old friendships and married Sue Ann Jacob at First Baptist Church on February 4, 1961 in Abilene, TX. J.L and Sue raised 3 children and recently celebrated 51 years of marriage.
J.L. was an active member of First Baptist Church for 51 years, serving on numerous committees and ministry teams including teaching of Pre-School and Sunday school classes. His fondest involvement was teaching 2 and 3 year olds for 20 years. J.L had a heart for volunteerism and was involved in many civic organizations. Community involvement included serving as President, Zone Chairman and Deputy District Governor of the Cactus Lions Club, President and Lifetime Member of Abilene Jaycees and JCI Senator, Abilene Convention & Visitors Bureau, Abilene Chamber of Commerce, Abilene State School, Hardin Simmons University Board of Young Associates, Hardin Simmons Ex-Students Association, West Texas Rehabilitation Center Telethon, Western Little League and was Outstanding Lunch Buddy of the Year for Big Brothers, Big Sisters.
J.L. enjoyed going to family and class reunions, attending many grandchildren's school and sport activities. He was fiercely loyal and faithful to his family and loved them dearly. He was an avid fan of the Dallas Cowboys and enjoyed travel around the U.S. and Europe, most recently a trip to Branson, Missouri. He loved to read and play volleyball and enjoyed history of all kinds. He was an attentive care giver for his parents and in-laws and had a passion for caring for those in need. He was an active and supportive member of the Big Country Parkinson's Support Group.
J.L. was preceded in death by parents Jessel and Mary Edwards and brother Gerald Elton Edwards.
J.L. is survived by wife, Sue Edwards, two sons Mark Edwards (Courtney) of Abilene, Matt Edwards (Vicki) of Amarillo, one daughter Mindi Curnutt (Casey) of Abilene, one brother Deral Edwards of Bangs, seven grandchildren; Elizabeth and Robert Riggins , Dallas and Reese Brown, Mackenzie and Kyle Curnutt, and Cooper, Cole and Madison Edwards.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Cactus Lions Club.
Memorials may be given to West Texas Rehabilitation Center, 4601 Hartford, Abilene, TX 79605; Big Country Parkinson's Association; and City Light Ministry of First Baptist Church, P O Box 85, Abilene, TX 79604.

Leah Jan Hirtzel Stonebarger was born in Abilene, Texas March 29th, 1970 and died October 6th, 2012. She graduated from Abilene High in 1988, 50 years after her Grandfather George Truett Black. She married Tony Stonebarger on May 16th, 1992 after meeting on a blind date a year earlier. Together they have 2 boys, Jake born September 9, 1993 and Truett born February 14, 1995, and she was a mom to all who came into her house or under her watch. Her family, friends, and church were the center of her life; she connected to lifelong friends at a young age and touched the heart of everyone she met. She displayed a love of life and her smile was infectious. Leah opened and managed Truly Texas stores for the owners in Midland and San Angelo when she was 20 years old and was trusted in business throughout her life even though personal success was never her goal. She only wanted to do whatever she could to help YOU. Outside of business she was "The Cruise Director" planning family vacations, Church Bus Trips, and anything else YOU wanted her to do. She taught in Mother's Day out programs, was the PTA president and a Den Mother. Leah loved and trusted in her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She was a member of the Valley Church of Christ in Gunter, TX.
Leah's life was cut short by cancer, but she faced that terrible diagnosis as she did everything else in her life: with Strength and a Smile. Through her battle she made more friends and inspired more people (old friends, Dr.'s and nurses, or casual meetings). She too was inspired by her friends, receiving dividends on the love she had given throughout her life. She was overwhelmed by the support of all of those who joined the battle with her.
Leah is survived by her loving husband Tony, her two sons Jake and Truett, parents Terry and Jo Ann Hirtzel, sister Teresa Pendell and her husband Kevin, brother Scott Hirtzel and his wife Roseanne, father and mother in law Carl and Rita Stonebarger.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, October 10, 2012 at Allen Family Funeral Options from 6-8:00 PM. A funeral service to celebrate Leah's life will be held on Thursday, October 11, 2012 at 1:00 PM at The First Baptist Church of Celina, 841 North Preston Rd., Celina, Texas 75009 with Deacon Tom Boelens officiating.
There will also be a memorial service held on Saturday, October 13, 2012 at 10:00 AM at Calvary Baptist, 1165 Minter Lane Abilene, TX 79603 with Christopher Leissner officiating.

Thank you so much for your message regarding the class ring of 1961 for Jim Ned. I believe it may belong to Lynda Roye Kendrick. She was with the class of 1961 as a Junior and I believe she ended up graduating with the class of 1960 according to some newspaper clippings. I will get in contact with some of her old classmates to see if they know how to get in touch with her.
My family went on a camping trip a while back and we found a class ring. There is a ruby in the middle and the ring has an open back. Jim Ned high school is around the outside of the stone (which is how I got to this site.) It has the Indian mascot on both sides o the ring with the word Indian on either side as well. I'm assuming it ostensibly a woman's ring because of the size and we'd love to return it however when we looked at the list of names of students who graduated in 1961 we didn't find anyone with the initials L.R.K. or L.E.K. which is the initials the are engraved on the inside of the band. (We are unsure of the middle initial do to lack of polishing and the fact that it was outside for who knows how many years) If anyone could get back to me about the ring I would love to return it to the rightful owner. Taylor County man dies from injuries in two-vehicle crash Monday night

A Tuscola man died late Monday night from injuries sustained in a two-vehicle crash north of Bradshaw on U.S. Highway 83 in Taylor County.
Jason Earl Winegeart, 20, was pronounced dead at Hendrick Medical Center at 9:47 p.m., just over an hour after the accident. Injured were Angela Marie Anderson, 40, of Winters and Randy Jacob Burnsed, 21 of Ovalo. Both were taken to Hendrick.
According to the Department of Public Safety, Winegeart was driving a 2006 Volkswagen Jetta northbound on U.S. 83 in southwest Taylor County. Anderson was driving a 2007 GMC Yukon southbound on the highway.
DPS reported Winegeart's vehicle drifted into the southbound lane and struck the Yukon near the highway intersection with County Road 205 about 8:40 p.m.
Andersons sustained a broken ankle while Burnsed had minor abrasions. Both were wearing a seat belt. DPS reported Winegeart was not wearing a seat belt.
Road conditions were dry and weather clear.
Trooper Jarrod Hubbard is investigating.

Virgil Lee Fulfer, 71, passed away Sunday, September 30, 2012 at a local medical center. A graveside service is scheduled for 11:00 am Wednesday October 3, 2012 at the Buffalo Gap Cemetery, with Weldon Gann officiating, directed by Fry~Bartlett Funeral Home, Tuscola. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 pm on Tuesday October 2, 2012 at the funeral home.
He married Edna Lynn June 4, 1956 in Girard, Texas. They had three sons. Virgil was employed by Central Texas Iron Works until his retirement. He was a welder by profession.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Ruth Fulfer Kidd, a nephew, Chris Kidd, several uncles, aunts, and cousins.
He is survived by his wife, Edna of the home, three sons Ricky, Dean, Randy and wife Tammy, and his precious grandchildren who were the light of his life, Dalyce, Jarrett, Brooklynn, London and Aspen. He is also survived by many relatives and friends.

Dorothy Marion Standard, 95, passed away Friday, September 28, 2012 at Wesley Court nursing facility. A graveside service will be held 2:00 p.m. on Monday, October 1, 2012 in the Tuscola Cemetery, Ryan Goodwin officiating, directed by Fry~Bartlett Funeral Home, Tuscola. A visitation will be held on Sunday, September 30, 2012 from 6 to 7:30pm at the funeral home.
Dorothy was born on June 29, 1917 to Aaron and Lela Hare in Amarillo. After the death of her father, Dorothy moved to Abilene where she graduated from Abilene High School in 1936. She then attended West Texas State Teachers College in Canyon.
Dorothy met Billy Lee Standard while in high school and they married on May 24, 1941 in Abilene. Dorothy and Billy settled in Tuscola where she was a stay at home mother raising their two children.
She is survived by her daughter, Jeanne Standard of Tuscola, a sister Lucille Justice of Dallas, two nieces and two nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Billy (2002), and a son, David Neal Standard (1970).

Ralph LaVaughn Adams, 86, passed away Saturday, September 22, 2012 in Abilene. His funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, September 25th in the Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel, 5750 HWY 277 South. Visitation is from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Monday at Elmwood.
Ralph was born on September 8, 1926 in South Taylor County the son of Chester T. Adams and Wilma McMillen Adams. He married Jane Allen of Ovala on January 1, 1949. They were married for 64 years. In January of 1945 when Ralph was a senior in High School, he was drafted to serve his country during WWII. He served in the 11th Airborne Paratroopers until 1947. Ralph worked for Cabot Gas Supply from 1948 until 1988, starting out as an office clerk in Kermit, Texas and ending his career as Area Manager Superintendent in Monahans, Texas.
Survivors include his wife Jane of Abilene; his children, Randy Adams and wife Myra, Rusty Adams, Rodney Adams and wife Denise, and Rhonda Nash and husband Kenny; three grandchildren, Justin Adams, Lance Adams and wife Line, and Ashley Adams; and two great grandchildren; one brother, Jerry Adams and wife Donna; two sisters, Mary Phipps, and Patty Rosson and husband Ken; and brother-in-law, Jake Popnoe.
His parents and three sisters, Fern Adams Wood Beaver, Janie Adams Smith Thompson and Willa Glyn "Bitty" Adams Popnoe preceded him in death.

Frankie Ora Thomas Mayfield, 78, passed away Saturday, September 22, 2012. Frankie was born on May 24, 1934 to Acel and Cleo (Corley) Moffitt in Wilson, Texas. She attended school in Wolfforth where she graduated from Friendship High school in 1952.
Frankie, for 21 years, worked as a cosmetologist. She retired in 1980 to become a stay at home mother and raise her children. She loved to sew, garden, and crochet. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Tuscola, Lions Club, Tuscola City Council, the Tuscola Senior Citizens, and the Old Crows Dominos Group.
Frankie married Gene Thomas in 1954, and then after his death in 1965 she met and married Glenn Mayfield in 1975.
She is survived by four daughters Kathy Coats and husband Mark of Midland, Carol Gomez and husband Ruben of Abilene, Connie Sanders and husband Buster of Claude, Dawn Kahlden and husband, Jeff of Weatherford, two brothers, Stanley and Johnny Moffitt, and a sister Shelba Nelson, ten grandchildren, Josh Coats, Jake and Sissy Gomez, Natasha and Brice Sanders, Hudson and Quinn Kahlden, Jessica Allen, Heather Bretlinger, and Randy Mayfield, and four great-grandchildren, Destiny and Blake Gomez, and Vivica and Andru Villa.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands Gene Thomas (1965), and Glenn Mayfield (1993), son Harley Thomas, granddaughter Krystal Coats and a brother A.J. Moffitt.

Survivors include her daughter, Meredith Tate of Abilene; her father, Josh Parks and wife, Tonya of Abilene; her mother, Karen Evans and husband, Milton of Abilene; her brother, Josh Parks II of Abilene; her step-brother, Damon Rose and wife, Abby of Abilene; her step-sister, Sara Borowicz of Indiana, and Nicole Barbieri, who she loved as a step-sister of Tuscola; her grandparents, Carl & Karen Dingler of Buffalo Gap; her great-grandmother, Alice Johnson of Arkansas; several aunts, uncles, cousins, one nephew, and one niece.

Iona was born August 19, 1939 in Ovalo, TX to Harold and Mildred Gill Blankenship. She attended South Taylor High School and married D.R. Earnest in 1956. They moved to El Paso, TX where D.R. was stationed in the United States Air Force. After being stationed in Japan, they moved back to Abilene where she worked as a cosmetologist. She worked most of her career at Arties Cameo and Leggett Salon. She served as a Deacon at Brookhollow Christian Church, enjoyed sewing, cooking, and gardening. Spending time with and taking care of her family was the thing that brought her the most joy.
Iona is survived by her husband of 56 years, Dinzel Ray Earnest; three children, Gale Barnhill and husband Ken of Lake Dallas, Diana Walker and husband Steve of Tuscola, Danny Earnest and wife Debbie of Frisco; ten grandchildren, Iona Shaye Robinson, Kenneth Barnhill, Robert Barnhill, Rebecca Barnhill, Kari Barnhill, Jeremy Walker, Lyndi Manning, Lacey Gaffney, Ryan Earnest, Garrett Earnest; eight great grandchildren, Kenneth Robinson Jr., Iona Keeley Robinson, Kealey Barnhill, Kenneth Barnhill III, Andrew Ryan Barnhill, Hannah Walker, Maggie Walker, Madelynn Manning; one sister, Anita Evans; one brother, Don Blankenship; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Rose Marie Hans Helser, 71, an avid traveler, made her final trip home on Saturday August 25, 2012. Rose filled her days on earth with faith and family. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, doting grandmother and loyal friend to all who met her.
Christian was not a label to Rose, but the actions she took to serve God. She made sure that every crust of bread was used to nourish one of God's creatures.

Joyce Henry Glasgow, 79, died Thursday, August 16, 2012 at an Abilene medical center.
Born in Buffalo Gap, Texas on April 26, 1933, she was born a twin to Ella Mae (Harrison) and Glen E. Johnson. Joyce worked as a watchmaker with Timex for ten years. She previously worked at Bob's Ice Cream Shop in the Mall of Abilene for ten years. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Buffalo Gap.
She was preceded in death by two husbands, A.C. Henry on April 9, 1982, and Joe Tom Glasgow on September 19, 2010; her father, Glen E. Johnson; her mother, Ella Mae Johnson; and two sisters, Peggy Brolls and Glena Hailey.
Joyce is survived by her son, Charlie Henry of Fort Worth; daughter, Della Henry of Buffalo Gap, Texas; nephew/son, Larry Brookerson of Buffalo Gap; twin sister, Dolly Loyce Campbell of Klamath Falls, Oregon; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 20, at First Baptist Church of Buffalo Gap with Joe De Angelis officiating. Lucille C. Zimmerle, 79, of Abilene passed away August 6, 2012. The family will be receiving guests for a visitation, Friday, August 10, 2012, at 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. at North's Memorial Chapel, 242 Orange Street. A funeral service will be Saturday, August 11, 2012, 10:00 a.m. at University Church of Christ with Bill Young, officiating. Burial will follow at Dewey Cemetery in Lawn under the direction of North's Funeral Home.
Lucille was born January 17, 1933 in Crowell, Texas to Hubert and Gracie Carroll. She married Earl Zimmerle on August 10, 1951 in Crowell, Texas; they had 61 wonderful years together. She was a member of University Church of Christ.
Lucille was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Marshall.
She is survived by her husband, Earl; son, Jamie Zimmerle; daughter, Dianna Zugai and husband, Jay; three granddaughters, Shauna, Whitney, and Lauren Zugai; and sister, Teresa Harbaugh.

Thressa Ann Phariss, 54, left this world Monday, August 6, 2012 to be with her soul mate and husband Danny Phariss. A funeral service will be held at 10:00am, Friday, August 10, 2012, at First Baptist Church, Tuscola, directed by Fry~Bartlett Funeral Home, Tuscola. A visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00pm Thursday, August 9, 2012 at the Funeral Home.
Thressa was born on December 9, 1957 to Jack and Patsy (Blue) Williams in Spur, Texas.
Thressa married Danny Phariss on June 3, 1976 in Tuscola. They made Tuscola their home for the next thirty six years, where they raised their family.
Thressa worked for the Abilene State School as a computer specialist until 1986. She then became a stay at home mother for her three boys. Thressa was very active in the life of her family during this time. Her love and care continued for her family and grew with the arrival of each grandchild. Thressa loved each and every one of her grand children and enjoyed spoiling them.
Besides being a active grandmother she loved quilting, playing cards, bingo, and babysitting grandkids.
Thressa is survived by her three sons, Joshawa of Mingus, Jack and wife Malinda of Clyde, Jacob and wife Kari of Tuscola, three sisters, Patti Phariss of Tuscola, Betty Jean Snow of Mingus, and Nancy Chambers of Conroe, six grandchildren, Devin, Alex, Aliyah, Danny, Jacky, Joey, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was proceeded in death by, her husband Danny in 2011, her parents, and grandparents, niece Rhonda Lee Snow, great niece Lanie Jean Kimbrell, and brother Billy Jack Slaughter .

Elizabeth Ann Hughes Selvidge was born in Bradshaw, TX on August 8, 1926 to Eugene Hughes and Minnie Mae Page, and entered eternal rest on August 7, 2012 in San Antonio, TX. She graduated from Bradshaw High School in 1944. Ann was a loving mother and grandmother, dedicated to her family. She loved gardening and her cats, Chipper and Callie. She was preceded in death by her parents. Surviving are her daughter, Judi Dye, son, Michael Selvidge and wife, Sandra, and her daughter, Traci Ruiz and husband, Marty; grandchildren, Brent and Ross Dye, Jessica, Cody, Kelsey and Scott Selvidge. William "Bill" Turner, 81, passed away Wednesday, July 11, 2012 at his home in Abilene. Graveside funeral service will be 2 PM, Friday, July 13, 2012 at Elmwood Memorial Park, 5750 Hwy 277 South.
Bill was born in Lawn, TX on November 2, 1930 to Boyd and Lucille Shores Turner. He graduated from Lawn High School in 1948. Shortly after high school he married Pearl McMillin and they lived in Sweetwater. Bill worked for the Santa Fe Railroad for several years before relocating to Abilene and beginning work with Morton's Food. After Pearl's passing in 1988 he married Cynthia McCubbins in 1991. He worked for Dillard's for 14 years until his retirement in December of 2011. He was a lifelong member of the Baptist Church and attended Trinity Baptist Church in Abilene. Bill was a hard worker and enjoyed spending time with his family.
Bill is survived by his wife of 21 years, Cynthia Turner; one daughter, Vivian Brannon and husband Lawrence; one son, Mack Thomas and wife Sue; grandchildren, Jett Brannon and wife Becky, Wayne Brannon and wife Brenda, Kendall Thomas, Crystal Thomas; three great grandchildren, Sean Freeman, Stormy Brannon, Lindsey Brannon; three sisters, Betty Landers, Barbara Gillit and husband Wiley, and Bonnie Smith.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 40 years, Pearl.

 ODESSA Frances Rose Meise died Thursday, July 12, 2012 following a sudden and brief illness.
Rose was born November 2, 1937 in Lawn, Texas to Bill and Rufina Frymire. She was the youngest of five children and the only girl. She married Carl W. Meise, Jr. on August 4, 1957. They soon moved to Odessa, Texas where they settled and raised 3 boys: Kerry, Darrell and Adam. She was a devoted mother, never missing a ball game, half-time performance, band concert, or anything else her boys were involved in. She had an open-door policy around the house and many of her boy's friends also lovingly called her "mom".
Rose had a 40+ year career in banking. After retiring, she devoted much of her time to her church where she held numerous offices and served on countless committees. She also served on many Presbytery committees through Women of the Church. She was loved and respected by everyone who ever served or worked with her. She had a way of always getting things done, usually to perfection.
Rose loved to have her family around and often attended track meets, soccer, T-ball, softball, volleyball and basketball games of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved to take care of her family and hosted almost every family gathering, cooking all their favorite meals and treats. She was a care-giver to the end, always willing to help someone in need.
Rose was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers: G.W. "Dub" Frymire and Carl Lee Frymire.
Rose is survived by her husband Carl, to whom she was married for almost 55 years, three sons and their wives: Kerry and Donna, Darrell and Terri, Adam and Joanna (all of Odessa); six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, two brothers and their wives: Pete and Jo Frymire of Sweetwater, TX and Harold and Lettie Frymire of Abilene, TX; along with a large extended family.
Rose will be missed by all and forgotten by none. She will always be loved and cherished. Her family takes great comfort in knowing that she is one of God's newest angels and can now help everyone. Heaven will have a real treat if they ask her to make a batch of banana pudding.
The family will host visitation at Sunset Funeral Home on Tuesday, July 17, 2012 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 18, 2012 at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Odessa. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Obituary for Randell D. Lusk
Randell Dudley "Randy" Lusk, 74, of Emory, Texas and former, long-time Abilene resident, passed away Monday, July 9, 2012 at Senior Suite Care & Rehab of Emory.
He was born September 29, 1937 in Winters, Texas to Joe D. and LaVerne (Denson) Lusk. His parents lived in Bradshaw, and Randy, as he was known to family and friends, grew up in that community. He graduated from South Taylor High School in Tuscola.
Randy joined the US Air Force in 1954 where he served 21 months in the Philippine Islands. In the summer of 1958 he was honorably discharged and returned home to the "love of his life," Patricia Ann Wiley. They were married in the fall of that year.
Randy spent the majority of his adult life working as a buyer for Texas Hide and Metal Company in Abilene. He also worked several years for the State of Texas Prison System in Abilene, was a professional installer for Interior Designs in Abilene, and drove a route part-time for transporting the U.S. mail.
He loved vacationing in the mountains of Colorado and New Mexico and enjoyed his back yard and watching programs on the History, Discovery, and Weather channels. He loved to watch his grandchildren play and hear about their lives and milestones. Randy was a serious, hard-working man who was very dedicated and dependable in every aspect. He never lost his dreams and always encouraged others to dream big, to work hard for what they believed in, and to trust the Lord!
Randy and his family attended church and fellowshipped at Word of Emmanuel Family Church of Abilene, later called Fountaingate. He was a member of the Full Gospel Businessmen's Fellowship International through the late 1960's and 70's. A favorite of his to sing was "This is the day; this is the day that the Lord hath made!"
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife; and all his siblings, John Harris, Bobbie Harris Nicholas, Oleta Harris Harlow, and Shirley Jo Lusk Branham.
Randy is survived by his daughter, Melissa Ann Goodwin and husband, Brent, of Katy; and son, Randell Scott Lusk and wife, Lisa, of Emory. Also surviving are grandchildren, Victoria Caitlin and Colton Brent Goodwin of Katy; Preston Scott and Olivia Nicole Lusk of Emory, and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to express thanks to Hospice Plus of Emory, Greenville and Dallas for their devoted and constant care for Randy during the last six months of his life.
There will be a memorial service on Tuesday, July 17 at 11:00 a.m. at Lange Funeral Home Chapel in Ballinger. Interment will be that afternoon at Old Runnels Cemetery.

David Cheatheam, 39, Grand Junction, died July 5, 2012, at his home. Services will be at 4:30 p.m. Monday at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary. Mr. Cheatheam was a senior district manager for bit service at Halliburton. Survivors include one son, Garrison of San Angelo, Texas; his parents, Mike and Jean of Vancouver, Wash.; and one brother, Justin of Los Angeles. Memorial contributions to The Salvation Army, 1235 N. Monday, June 25, 2012, Dorothy Hefley, 87, went to be with her soulmate, Doyle, to walk hand in hand through eternity as they did here. He preceded her in death in 2010.
She was born 10/30/1924 in Tuledo, Texas, youngest child of James Wesley and Elizabeth Stansbury Mullins.
She graduated from Brady High School during World War II and started to work for the Santa Fe Railroad as the first female train telegrapher in central Texas. She worked many years during that time 7 days a week. She worked in several surrounding towns, finally coming to work at Lawn where she met Doyle after he came home from 3 years of fierce fighting in the Pacific Theatre. She often told how she could "feel" when he walked into the store or cafe where she was sitting. They married in 1949. The 50's drought forced them to leave his beloved Lawn where he farmed. He went to work for the railroad until they moved back to Lawn in 1958. He worked then for over 30 years for Taylor County and she worked as well as Lawn city secretary, secretary for Walker Well Service and then the Jim Ned School where she retired.
They have one daughter, Sherry Havins Gilmore of Lawn, three grandsons, Clint Dee and Adriana Havins from San Angelo, Clinton and Melanie Gilmore from Alamogordo, New Mexico, and Clayton Gilmore of Cross Plains. She was the last of her generation in the family, but leaves a positive strength of character as a legacy to her nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:30 to 8:00 at Fry-Bartlett Funeral Home in Tuscola and graveside service will be Thursday at 10:00 at Dewey Cemetery 3 miles south of Lawn. The family wishes to thank the staff at The Oaks at Radford Hills Skilled Nursing Facility and Hendrick Hospice Care.
Sherry Gilmore...Thank you all soooo much for being there for me. We will have visitation Wednesday 5:30 - 8:00 at Fry-Bartlett Funeral Home in Tuscola and the graveside will be 10 am on Thursday at Dewey cemetery 3 miles south of Lawn. I asked them a few years ago when we were at the cemetry if they wanted services and they said, "no, graveside is just fine as all our friends are out here". Please know that I love you and thank you for your being there for me. I just couldn't make it without knowing you are there! I hope to see all of you at happy times to come.

Robert O. Yown, 77, passed away May 20, 2012. A graveside service, with military honors, is scheduled for 10:00 am Friday, May 25, 2012, at the Buffalo Gap Cemetery, directed by Fry~Bartlett Funeral Home, Tuscola. A visitation will be held from 5 to 7 Pm on Thursday May 24, 2012 at the funeral home.
Bob was born on March 28, 1935 in Cross City, Florida to Judson and Elizabeth (Jones) Yown, and he was a long time resident of Tuscola. He married Peggy Stephens at Dyess Air Force Base on December 21, 1956.
Bob was a man of detail, this coming from his 24 years of service to our country in the United State Air Force and his 31 years with the Abilene Independent School District. The ultimate project manager, if he told you he was going to do something he did it. He would say " A man is only as good as his word". He was a quiet man, always a gentleman, well groomed, spit-shined, and courteous to others. In a day when we need good men, we all learned from his example.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents Judson and Elizabeth Yown and one brother J.C. Yown. He is survived by his wife Peggy Yown, two sisters, Mellodean Tarrant and Marjorie Harvey, both of Florida. Four daughters: Susan and (Philip) Roberts of Bangs, Kelly and (Richard) Meyer of Abilene, Shelly and (Tommy) Chapman of Andrews, and Robin Yown of Garland. Grandchildren Judson and (Erica) Patton, Brooke Clark, Brittany Meyer, Rae Johnson and(Rusty Glasscock), Aden Bartek, Kifer Bartek, Nikki Roberts, and Sara Haase, Great-Grandchildren Braegan Glasscock, Jonathan Mlenak, Clay Patton, Ronnie Johnson, Maddox Patton, Larkyn Glasscock, Teeghan Rose Meyer, Rylie Meyer-Archer, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Gary was born in Hendrick Hospital on December 15, 1956 to Vaughn and Ruth O'Shields.
Gary was raised in southern Taylor County always calling Lawn his home. He graduated in 1976 from Jim Ned High School.
He was a man who loved to work with his hands with carpentry being his specialty.
Gary was an avid outdoorsman, who loved to hunt and fish, always respectful to nature.
Gary was known by his friends and family as a man who was quick with a handshake, truthful to his word, and always generous
Gary is survived by his parents Vaughn and Ruth O'Shields of Lawn, brother Shannon O'Shields of Lawn, Nephew David O'Shields of Abilene, niece Sara Boyles of Abilene , nephews Macon and Ransom O'Shields of Abilene, and seven great nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by a brother Stacey O'Shields.

Winnie Lucille Monroe Ford, 89, she passed quietly from this life Friday, May 25, 2012. Funeral services are scheduled for Monday 2:00 pm at Lawn Church of Christ with burial in McBee cemetery, directed by Fry~Bartlett Funeral Home, Tuscola. A visitation from 3:00 to 5:00 pm will held Sunday May 27, 2012 at the funeral home.
Lucille was born June 18, 1922, during a tornado at Oplin, Texas, to Sebe and Mattie McKinley Monroe. Lucille attended school at Rogers and graduated from Oplin High School. She attended Draughons Business College.
Lucille married the love of her life, Harold Ford in 1941.
Lucille's work experience included Woolworth, Farmers Grocery, Lawn City Secretary, and Income Tax Accounting for over 50 years. Farming and ranching were always an active part of her life. Being a member and officer of the Taylor County Farm Bureau was an important part of her life. The Rural Taylor County Aging Service for senior citizens program was a high priority to Lucille, serving as site leader and county board of directors for many years. Lucille was a 4-H Club leader for her children and many others. For the past 22 years, Lucille was the secretary-treasurer for the McBee Cemetery Association. Lawn Church of Christ was Lucille's Church home for 65 years. Serving and loving God, community and family were her life's story.
Lucille is survived by her son, Randy Ford (and wife Beverly) of Frisco; daughter, Carolyn Atkins (and husband Chris) of Lawn; grandchildren Stacy Atkins, Jennifer (Miles) Willis, John (Teresa) Atkins, David Ford, Daniel Ford, and Aaron (Whitney) Appleby; great-grandchildren, Conner, Malia, & Maeson Willis, Hailey and Mattie Atkins; brother S.D. Monroe (and wife Goldie) of Abilene; and niece Debbie (Steve) Alexander of Granbury.
Lucille was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Ford, her parents Sebe & Mattie Monroe, sister Etna Monroe Carr, brothers Alton and Clifford Monroe.

Willie Edwards, 78, of Clyde died Tuesday, May 15, 2012 in a Clyde Care Center. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, May 18, 2012 at the Clyde Church of Christ with Jim Cox officiating and David Peterson assisting. Burial will follow in the Clyde Cemetery under the direction of Bailey Howard Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 17, 2012 at the funeral home.
Born December 6, 1933 to Charles and Willie Keller, Willie was the youngest of four children. She attended Lawn Schools and enjoyed playing basketball. She graduated from Lawn High School in 1952. She met and fell in love with James Carrol Edwards; they were married on September 30, 1953 in Clyde. During their marriage of over 58 years James and Willie were blessed with three sons, Rickey, Randy and Ronnie, whom she raised with love, faith, and compassion. Willie was an active member of the Clyde Church of Christ. She enjoyed worship gatherings alongside her church family. James and Willie enjoyed fishing and camping trips together. She loved and cherished the time spent with her grandchildren. Willie had a career working and caring for the young, elderly, and disabled at West Texas Medical Center, Clyde Nursing Home. She retired from the Abilene State Supported Living Center after over 20 years of service.
She is survived by her husband James, of Clyde; sons Rickey and wife Gail of Breckenridge, Randy and wife Elaine of Clyde, Ronnie and wife Rachel of Fulshear; eight grandchildren, Nikki Edwards-Anderson of Breckenridge, Danella Edwards of Houston, Zan Wilson and husband Ty of Baird, D'nae Edwards of Abilene, Derek Edwards and wife Tiffany of Clyde, Hunter Edwards of Breckenridge, Allison and Emily Edwards of Fulshear; three great-grandchildren, Blake and Chase Lee and Layton Anderson all of Breckenridge; sister-in-law Joyce Edwards of Clyde, along with numerous nieces, nephews and close family friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents Charles and Willie Keller, brothers Steve Keller and Wayne Keller, sister Ruth Keller, and brother-in-law Lyndon Edwards.

I know I have missed several others who have had family members pass away over the past month or so. I feel sad that I have not been able to post lately for I have been recovering from neck and back procedures. Patsy Ruth Shea, 80, quietly passed away Monday, May 14, 2012, in Abilene. Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 16, at First Baptist Church, Tuscola, under the direction of Fry-Bartlett Funeral Home, Tuscola. Burial will be Thursday, May 17, in Perry, Oklahoma.
Patsy was born October 12, 1931, in Perry, Oklahoma, to P.O. and Lauda Price. She married Bob Shea, December 23, 1948; during their married life, they made their home in Jacksboro, Iraan, Albany, Haskell, Texas, in Eunice, New Mexico, at Possum Kingdom Lake and finally in Tuscola, Texas.
Pat had a wonderful sense of humor, she loved to cook, and most of all, she loved her family; she was a member of First Baptist Church, Tuscola.
She is survived by her husband Bob, of Tuscola; son Bobby Shea and wife, Gail, of Tuscola; son Richard Shea and wife, Janet, of Mineral Wells; grandson Jason Shea, and wife, Kari; granddaughter Lindsay Jones and husband, Michael; granddaughter, Kriste Shea; granddaughter Shannon Shea; granddaughter Stacy Robinson and husband, Todd; and great grandchildren Sydnee and Ellie Shea, Bryce and Dylan Jones, and Bodie Adams.

Gene was born April 4, 1929 to Vaughn and Daisy Greer Willis in Lawn. Gene grew up in Lawn, and was a proud Lawn Longhorn, graduating in 1947.
Gene worked in and around automobiles all his life as an automotive service manager, automotive parts and paint representative, gas station owner, and full time farmer and rancher in southern Taylor County.
He married Zella Davis on June 23, 1950 in Abilene. He and Zella raised four children in their sixty-one years of marriage.
Gene loved sports and was a die-hard Texas Rangers fan. He also loved the outdoors from fishing to building birdhouses, but most of all loved watching his grandchildren play sports.
Gene is survived his wife Zella of Abilene, his sons Mike Willis and wife Chrissy of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Brian Willis and wife Kren of Abilene, Scott Willis and wife Stephanie of Lawn, his daughter, Lori West and husband Stan of Hamby. He is survived by seven grandchildren, John Willis, Eric and Evan Willis, Dusty and wife Ashley West, Lindsey West, and Daisy and Marly Willis.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Dottie Burton.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Broadview Baptist Church or to Hendrick Hospice.
A special thank you is extended to their church family, especially their Sunday School class and his Hospice caregivers Joan and Serena who cared for him in the last weeks of his life.

April 24, 2012 it was announced that Kelsey Tutt, daughter of Kevin ('85) and Marci Middleton ('86) Tutt, is the first recipient of the White-McIntyre Preservation Scholarship for Academics presented by Jim Ned Valley Heritage Preservation. The White-McIntyre scholarship was established in honor of Marceille White McIntyre for her many years of dedication to community preservation. Marceille is a 1945 graduate of the Tuscola Tigers.

Larry Dale Mitcham, 60, of San Angelo passed away Tuesday, March 6, 2012 at his residence after a brief illness.
Larry was born June 12, 1951 in Abilene, Texas to Charlie and Betty Jean (Stevens) Mitcham, growing up in the Jim Ned Valley area. He graduated from Jim Ned High School in Tuscola in 1970. While in school, he was football hero in 65-66, class favorite his sophomore year, Who's Who and in 69-70 was football hero, all-district,all-area and all-state.
Larry was well liked by many, possessing a ready smile, an affable disposition and a ready wit which brought smiles to many faces. He was well respected, being a paragon of good manners himself. He will be greatly missed by a lot of folks.
Visitation will be held on Friday, March 9,2012 at Johnson's Funeral Home from 6 to 8 pm for family and friends.
Visitation will be held in Tuscola at Fry-Bartlett Funeral Home from 10 to 11AM on Saturday the 10th with a graveside service to follow at 11:30 at the Tuscola Cemetery officiated by Rev Jack Stevens of Clyde.
Prior to moving to San Angelo he lived in Sterling City for 18 years.
Larry was currently employed with Walmart for over 10 years. Some of his favorite times were spent playing bingo and dominoes with his friends, co-workers and family.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Betty and his sister, Sandra Tennison and a very special friend, Paula Radde.
Larry is survived and deeply loved by his son, Patrick Mitcham and wife, Brittany and their son, Jacob of San Angelo, son, Larry Mitcham II and son, Tristan of Lubbock; aunts, Margie Ladner and husband, Don of Ovalo, Joy Booth and husband, Clyde of Lawn and Sue Vaughn of Abilene; uncle Jack Stevens and wife, Linda of Clyde along with numerous cousins, nephews, nieces, friends and co-workers.

Dub McMillon, 86, of Ballinger died early Saturday morning, March 3, 2012 at Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene.
He was born May 22, 1925 in Guion, TX to James Luther and Tennie (Haynie) McMillon. He attended college at Hardin-Simmons in Abilene before serving with the US Navy during WW II. He married Lanora Jo Young on January 20, 1948 in Abilene. She preceded him in death on September 18, 2006.
Dub farmed and ranched all his life and sold insurance on the side. He worked for Farm Bureau for many years, and was the Agency Manager for Runnels County Farm Bureau retiring after 16 years so he could spend more time with the love s of his life, his family and farming/ranching.
Survivors include his daughter, Mary McMillon and two sons, James McMillon and wife, Sarah and Larry McMillon and wife, Suzanne all of Abilene; four grandchildren, Shellie McMillon of Arlington, Alison McMillon of Dallas, Nick and Reyna McMillon of Abilene and Kristi and Webb Murphy also of Abilene. Five great grandchildren, Maddie McMillon, Wyatt McMillon, Doak McMillon, Carson Murphy and Mason Murphy also survive.
A visitation time for friends and family will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 6th at Lange Funeral Home. There will be a service of celebration at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 7, 2012 at the First Baptist Church in Ballinger with Rev. Ferris Akins and Bro. Bobby Broyles officiating. Burial will follow at 3:00 p.m. at the Elmwood Memorial Park Cemetery in Abilene.

Jim Ned Valley Heritage Preservation is offering a scholarship award to JN HS Senior's. The White-McIntyre Preservation Scholarship for Academics in the amount of a no less than $250.00. Applications are available at the counselor's office from March 5th-April 17th and completed application's should be returned to the counselor's office at the close of school day April 17th. Award winner will be announced April 24th and invited to attend the JNVHP Annual Membership Party, April 26th 6-8, at the First Baptist Church Tuscola Family Life Center Located on Kent St in Tuscola behind the Preservation building.
During the membership party there will be a Video Presentation of Jim Ned, Delaware Indian Chief/Captain, Kansas Infantry and His Heritage. Krystal Lynn Laramore, 35, died Tuesday, February 28, 2012 in Abilene, Texas.
Born in Abilene, Texas on February 1, 1977, Krystal graduated from Abilene High School. She received a Bachelor of Nursing degree in South Carolina. She was a R.N. working on contract. She lived in the Abilene area most of her life and attended Beltway Baptist Church.
Krystal is survived by her son, Braxton James Laramore of Allen, Texas; mother, Nita Smith of Abilene; father, Alton Smith of Abilene; three brothers, Timothy Smith and wife Pam of Abilene, and Jay Brock and John Brock both of the Metroplex Area; two sisters and spouses, Deborah Moore and John of Denver, Colorado, and Kari Giroux and Jason of Burlington, Vermont; and seven nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March 3, at Beltway Park Baptist Church Chapel, 4009 Beltway South, with Pastor Mike Hill officiating. Aaron Howard Update
Aaron is now in the maintenance phase of his leukemia treatment and, barring something unforeseen, only has to go to Cooks every three months now for treatment. This phase will last for two years, so hopefully by the end of 2013 or beginning of 2014, he will be finished with all of his treatment. His oncology doctor cleared him to return to school and he started back on Monday, January 30, 2012.
The Howard family would like to thank everyone for all the prayers, support, and generosity that came our way over the last eight months. It is incredibly humbling and encouraging to know that there are so many people out there rooting for Aaron's complete recovery. There is rarely, if ever, a day that goes by that someone does not ask us about Aaron. May God richly bless each and every one of you who helped to ease the difficult path that Aaron and his family have walked upon since his diagnosis in May 2011.
As our financial picture has greatly improved since Aaron's health is better, we respectfully ask that financial donations to the Aaron Howard Medical Fund be directed instead to those causes or families who are in much greater need. Of course we always welcome prayer and encouragement on behalf of Aaron.

Burial will follow in the Tuscola Cemetery, directed by Abilene Funeral Home. A Rosary will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Abilene Funeral Home Chapel, 3349 N. 12th Street.
Mr. Vasquez was born November 12, 1914, in Elgin, Texas to the late, Juan and Fabianita Vasquez. Mr. Vasquez had been a resident of Lawn since 1952, moving to Abilene in 1991.
Survivors include five sons, Frank Vasquez and wife, Liz of Bangs, Paul Vasquez and wife, Chavela of Michigan, Jesse Vasquez and wife, Genie of Lawn, Andrew "Andy" Vasquez and wife, Janie of Abilene, and Manuel Vasquez Jr. and wife, Pauline of Brownwood; a grandson who he raised like a son, Steve Peraza; three daughters, Beatrice "Bea" V. Olvera, Aurora "Rose" Bumgarner and Janie Vasquez, all of Abilene;a brother, Paul Vasquez of Abilene; a sister, Angelina Orta of Abilene; 16 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; 12 great-great grandchildren.
Mr. Vasquez was preceded in death by his wife, Manuela Vasquez; a brother, Antonio Vasquez; two sisters, Petra Vasquez and Lupe Vasquez.

Marjorie was born on February 8, 1925 in Content, Texas the daughter of D.D. Aldridge and Sarah McMillon Aldridge. She grew up on the family farm in Runnels County and was the youngest of 12 children. After high school she attended business school in Ft. Worth where she met Carl T. "Sonny" Wright. They were married on Valentine's Day of 1948 and enjoyed 59 wonderful years of marriage. Marjorie was a homemaker and worked in Civil Service for 25 years. She was a member of Primitive Baptist Church in Lawn for over 50 years. She enjoyed sewing, traveling and doting over her grandchildren.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Carla and Kent Finley of Coleman; she was the loving "Maw Maw" of two grandchildren, Kelley Vieth and husband Tory of Ft. Worth and Chance Finley and wife Kristi of Abilene; three great grandchildren, Payton and Lance Finley of Abilene and Jack Vieth of Ft. Worth and a fourth on the way who will be named Brett Vieth; also surviving are her brother, Amos Aldridge and wife Dorothy of Goldsboro; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Her parents, her husband and her brothers, Warren, Willie, J.D., Dalton, and Amon Aldridge and sisters, Lola Little, Lou Bailey, Alma Roberts, Lillie Rose and Lottie Rose preceded her in death.
Special thanks go to her special caregivers Lyndee Cox and Mickey New for their tender love and care.

 Billy Jack Cunningham, 76, died Saturday, January 14, 2012, at Baylor Hospital in downtown Fort Worth, Texas. He was born January 26, 1935 in Tuscola, Texas, the son of Bill and Eva Cunningham.
As a young man he went to work for Exxon service stations in Abilene. He played drums with a small band, playing the NCO clubs and Country clubs around the Abilene area.
In later years Billy Jack worked for Gooch Packing plant as a driver before a back injury caused him to retire. He lived in Aspermont, Texas for a number of years after retiring and later moved to Boyd, Texas.
He was a member of the Methodist Church at Tuscola.
Older folks may remember Billy as a red-headed, freckle-faced kid on a red bicycle with his dog in a side car and a big pet Racoon riding on the handlebars.
Billy is survived by his son, Dana Cunningham of Arlington, Texas; daughter, Debra Cunningham of the Metro-Plex area; grandson, Orlando Aguirre of Abilene; sister, Merleta Hon of Boyd, Texas; nephew, Charles Day of Tatum, New Mexico; and niece, Carol Waldrop of Boyd, Texas.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 16, in Tuscola Cemetery directed by The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road in Abilene. The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home prior to leaving for the graveside service in Tuscola.

Laura was born November 11, 1931 to Willie Hansmann and Elizabeth (Rahe) Hansmann in New Braunfels, Texas. She married Cecil H. Middleton on October 9, 1948. Laura was a member of Pioneer Drive Baptist Church. She loved her family and she was greatly loved by them. Laura had a compassionate heart and would sacrifice herself, time and resources to help meet the needs of others. She was a sincere, genuine, smart, loving Christian wife. Laura was a great mother, outstanding grandmother, super great-grandmother, and a close sister. She loved the Lord and always prayed for her family and friends. Laura always made others around her happy. She had a good sense of humor, and always liked to make other people laugh. Laura was an animal lover and will be missed by her pets, Baby and Star. Laura was a homemaker and was always there for her kids. She and her husband, Cecil, were long time small business owners in Abilene. Laura had worked for the Abilene Independent School District for many years.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
Survivors include a son, Russell Middleton and wife, Renata, of Alexandria, Virginia; three daughters, Rhonda Doan and husband, Randy, of Ovalo, Texas, Roxanne Rose and husband, Eddie, of San Angelo, Texas, and Rhene Davidson and husband, David, of Abilene; two brothers, Alex Hansmann of San Antonio, Texas and Nolan Hansmann of New Braunfels, Texas; three sisters, Darlene Rothe and Melba Weyel, both of New Braunfels, and Peggy Pape of Driftwood, Texas; grandchildren, Rachelle Grun, Ryan Doan, Justin Rose, Jordan Rose, Jared Davidson, Jaclyn Davidson, Julia Middleton, and Jonathan Middleton; great-grandchildren, Lauren Hutcherson, Callie Hutcherson, Dakota Hartness, Kaylee Hartness, and Jaxon Doan; and her pets, Baby and Star.

Maxine Stephens Pierson, 93, passed away Tuesday November 15, 2011, at her home in Tuscola. Service will be held at 2:00pm, Friday November 18, 2011 at the Tuscola Church of Christ, officiated by E.J. Chafin. Burial will follow in the Tuscola Cemetery, directed by Fry ~ Bartlett Funeral Home. A visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00pm Thursday evening November 17, 2011 at the funeral home.
Maxine was born in Choctaw County, Oklahoma on September 25, 1918 to Walter and Gladys Stephens.
She graduated from Wylie High School in1937. Maxine married Richard Pierson December 18, 1940. They resided in Tuscola where she was a homemaker and raised three daughters. She was a member of the Tuscola Church of Christ and a charter member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 664.
Maxine was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Richard, a son Stephen Pierson, grandsons Ronnie Waggoner and Adam Swaim, sister Inez Pierson and brother Whizzer Stephens.
Survivors include her three daughters, Nancy Storie of Abilene, Kathy Swaim and husband David of Tuscola, and Tommy Ann Waggoner and husband Gerald of Tuscola, six grandchildren Terry Swaim, Gary Ashwander, Bonnie Coxe, Shirley Hay, Richy Waggoner and Betty Swaim; eleven great-grandchildren, Stephanie Swaim, Tiffany Coxe, Meredith Cook, Allison Swaim, Wesley Paul, Kenan Waggoner, Lane Coxe, Aiden Waggoner, David, Leah and Sadie Barham. She is also survived by two sisters, Cora Lee Ross and Peggy Yown, brothers Tuck, Bud and Red Stephens, several nieces and nephews, and many friends.

Clyde W. Reid, 83, of Winters, passed away on Friday, November 4, 2011, at North Runnels Hospital in Winters. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, November 6, at 2:00 p.m. at the Bradshaw Baptist Church in Bradshaw, with burial in Bradshaw Cemetery, directed by Fry-Bartlett Funeral Home in Tuscola. Brother Ed Bigham will officiate.
Clyde was born on February 11, 1928 in Taylor County to Ernest and Minnie Shaffer Reid. He served in the army during World War II. He was a farmer for 35 years and then served as bus driver for the schools for 15 years. He married Ada Green in 1947 in Abilene, and they lived for over 64 years in South Taylor County.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father, and is survived by his wife of 64 years, two sons, Clifford Reid of Tuscola, and Howard Reid of Winters, and one daughter, Brenda Schrader & husband Myron of Winters. Clyde is also survived by one brother, Verlon Reid of Abilene and wife, Doris, four sisters, Josie Hicks of Abilene, Ethel Grun and husband Russell of Moro, Ellen Walters and husband Cal of Moro, Leola Allmand and husband J. W. of Ovalo; two grandsons, Terry Day and wife Sammie of Ballinger, and Myron Lynn Schrader of Winters, one granddaughter, Marcie Lemelen & husband Tim of Ellsworth, Maine, and five great-grandchildren.

David Joseph Chrz left this life for the next on Friday, October 28, 2011 suddenly and from natural causes. He was 64 years old.
Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist Church of Buffalo Gap on Tuesday, November 1, 2011 at 2:00p.m. officiated by Richard Petree.
Burial will be in the Tuscola Cemetery directed by Fry-Bartlett Funeral Home.
Visitation will be Monday, October 31, 2001 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the funeral home in Tuscola.
David was born July 15, 1947 in Austin, Minnesota to Joe and Jean Chrz. He spent his early life in Austin, MN. attending Pacelli HS and then St. Mary's College in Winona, MN. He dearly loved hunting and fishing in and around the beautiful lakes of Minnesota with his dad, grandpa and uncle. He worked in research and development at the Hormel Institute.
David moved to Texas in 1969 while serving in the United States Air Force as a weather observer for the flight crews. He met his wife Jacquie in 1971 and they were married for 30 years. David and Jacquie had 3 children, Kelley Ann, Joe and Stephanie. They built a new home in Cedar Gap during Stephanie's HS years and enjoyed watching the kids' sports at Jim Ned. In 1988 they were "home" to Daniel Kollberg, a Swedish exchange student that quickly became part of the family and has since returned to visit Texas many times.
After leaving the Air Force he enjoyed working at Bible Hardware selling guns to
customers that became lifelong friends. David worked for the last 27 years at United Oil and Grease. He was dependable and hard working and truly enjoyed his work travels and visiting with customers throughout the Big Country. Those customers became some of his very best friends and several have joined him on fishing trips to Minnesota and deer hunting here at home.
David had a passion for hunting and fishing... from the early years of duck hunting in his youth to his most recent deer camps in Oplin & Swenson. He loved researching guns and reloading his own shells for shooting trap and rifle. This last year he enjoyed spending time shooting at the Abilene Gun Club with grandson Alan and son-in-law Tim. He dedicated many hours of his life to his grandsons- reading in his lap, playing games and "just talking" to them. He always had a story or a life lesson and we were a captive audience. His friends and family were an important part of his life and he equally enjoyed both ends of a practical joke!
He recently told us that he was having the time of his life and that he was doing exactly what he had always wanted.
David was preceded in death by his father Joe Chrz, infant daughter Kelley Ann Chrz, ten year old son Joe Chrz, grandson Wade Knox and son-in-law Greg Knox.
Survivors include his wife Jacquie of Abilene, his mother Jean Heise and two sisters
Marj Torgerson and Cyd Oswald, all of Minnesota. His daughter and son-in-law,
Stephanie and Tim Gallagher of Tuscola, and lastly the grandsons Alan and Adam
Knox - the "supreme joys of his life"...
Pallbears are some of his great friends: Del Jones, Eddy Allyn, Mark Reeder, Mike Forrester, Cody Forrester, Don Landers, Larry Scott and Tom Carson.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made in David's name to the Tuscola Cemetery Association or the Abilene Gun Club where he had recently begun working on building up the 4H Youth Shooting Sports with his grandson Alan.

Nathan D. "Nate" Hooper, 28, of Junction, passed from this life following a job related accident in Georgia on October 6, 2011.
Born in Abilene, TX on June 18, 1983, he was the son of Troy Hooper and Holly Tautenhahn. He had lived in Junction for the past 4 years.
On June 25, 2010, he married Robin Z. Hornsby in Junction, TX.
Nate worked for IRBY Construction as a journeyman lineman for the past 3 years. This was a job that he truly loved.
A man with a big heart, Nate loved to make all smile and loved to be loved.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting and anything to do with the outdoors.
He always loved to make a statement, either with his blue Mohawk or his pink motorcycle, you always knew where he stood.
Those left to honor and cherish his memory are his wife, Robin Hooper of Junction; a step-son, Jaden Hardesty of Junction; 2 step-daughters, Elyssa Bode and Kylie Burney both of Junction; his mother, Holly Tautenhahn of Abilene; his father and step-mother, Troy and Stacey Hooper of Abilene; his step-father and wife, Donnie and Stacey Lamb of Oklahoma; a brother and sister-in-law, Aaron and Whitney Hooper of Abilene; his maternal grandparents, Douglas and Georgia Tautenhahn of Garland, TX; his in-laws, Jimmy and Sarah Hornsby of Junction; and his brothers-in-law, Jimmy H. Katri Elaine Sharp Chmielewski of Tuscola passed away at home on Thursday, October 13, 2011, after a 9 ½ year battle with breast cancer.
Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 18, 2011 at the Tuscola United Methodist Church with Reverends Michael Berry and Jack Stephens officiating. Services are under the direction of Walker Funeral Home of Coleman, Texas.
Katri was born on September 29, 1958 in Seattle, Washington. She was the daughter of the late Leonard and Barbara Sharp. Katri was a graduate of Jim Ned High School, class of 1977. On May 23, 1981 she married Joseph Andrew Chmielewski of Orlando, Florida. Katri served as a Special Education Aid for Jim Ned ISD for the last 13 years. For those that knew Katri she was a kind, gentle, caring woman with one of the biggest hearts you've ever seen. To those closest to her she was a rock, best friend, hero and a role model. She lived her life to its fullest, even through the toughest of struggles, one day at a time.
Left behind to cherish her memory of thirty (plus) years is: her husband, Joseph Chmielewski; a daughter, Tiffany Nichole and husband Jonathan Davis of Canyon, Texas; a son, Michael Chmielewski of Tuscola, Texas; a son, Joseph Andrew and wife Charity Chmielewski of Tuscola, Texas; a daughter, Taji and husband Eric Sperber of Elk Grove, California; five grandchildren Eriq Chmielewski, Ryden Davis, Carson Sperber, Presley Sperber, and Karley Sperber; one brother, Larry and wife Suzann Sharp of Tuscola, Texas; two nieces, Monica Sharp and Karli Sharp; and one nephew, Jared Sharp; one aunt, Rosiland Fuller of Flower Branch, Georgia; one uncle, Paul Bradham of Longview, Texas; as well as numerous cousins.

Seabron (Sonny) Cornealious Tilly, 72, passed away Monday, August 29, 2011, at an Abilene medical center. Graveside services will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, September 2, 2011, at Fort Phantom Hill Cemetery under the direction of Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory St. The family will receive friends at a visitation from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Sonny was born June 26, 1939 in Jacksonville, Florida. He moved to Texas in 1958 and has lived in Hawley, for the past 45 years. Sonny married Betty Nell Morris almost 52 years ago on October 3, 1959.
He served in the U.S. Air Force and was a member of the National Guard. Sonny was self-employed most of his life involved in service station equipment sales and service and owned and operated a gas station in his later years. He enjoyed his family, fishing, movies and his little dog Pebbles.
Preceding him in death are his parents, a brother and a sister.
Survivors include his wife Betty Tilly; two daughters Debbie Smith and husband Hoss and Mona Trojcak and husband Guy; a son Seabron (Ronnie) Tilly, IV and wife Teri all of Hawley; a brother Richard Tilly of Illinois; several nieces and nephews; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Rummage Sale-Building Campaign Kick-Off
Friday & Saturday, September 16th & 17th · 8:30am - 5:30pm
JNVHP Building - 510 Graham Street - Tuscola, Texas
Linda Stockton, Doyle Dacus and J.W. Allmand have been volunteering some of their time on working in the building over the past few days preparing for our up coming Building Campaign Kick-Off Fundraiser Garage Sale during Homecoming weekend September 16th and 17th from 8:30-5:30. First Campaign Goal by the end of 2011 is $35,000.00 for Phase I of interior cleaning, dismantle, and clearing in preparation for interior restructure /restoration during Phase II in 2012.
Your participation in many different areas would be grately appreciated and well received.
Saturday 9/10 the building will be open for donated item drop off between 10-1; Tuesday 9/13 between 6-8 p.m.; Thursday 9/15 between 8-11 a.m. and 5-8 p.m.
All members and volunteers sack supper gathering 9/13 at 6:30 p.m. at the building. Bring your own food or eat before you come. General update about the building possibilities and membership involvement for 9/15 garage sale preparations. Committees for other projects will be discussion.
Since the inception of JNVHP we have collected and scanned school yearbooks (soon to be added to the web site) and supported the Jim Ned Alumni web site at www.jimnedalumni.com ; located, photographed and documented over 20 small and large cemeteries as well as producing a 2-Volume Book set combined 725+ pages with detailed representation of community loved ones; scanned over 100 family history/community collections and conducted over 100 interviews for the Traveling Tales and Whispering Walls Family Reflections Collection 375+ pages. Presently working on updating the Restful Peace Cemetery Collection and adding histories of each cemetery for 2012 publication. Also, collecting information/photos/news articles/journals/deeds, etc. regarding histories and datelines of schools, churches, towns/communities, businesses and associations/societies in our focus area for future publications.
Join us in preparing our collective communites for an opportunity that can build strong relationships and nurture a community atmosphere that will encourage active communication and participation between generations.

Henry Franklin Miller, 75, died August 12, 2011 at a local care facility in Abilene. A service is scheduled for 10:00am Tuesday, August 16, 2011 at the Tuscola Methodist Church, Tuscola, Texas, officiating by Michael Berry. Directed by Fry ~ Bartlett Funeral Home, Tuscola, Texas. A visitation will be held Monday August 15, 2011 from 5 to 7pm at the funeral home. Interment will be at Dewey Cemetery, Lawn.
Henry was born to Henry and Ruby (Hudson) Miller on March 20, 1936 in Lawn. He spent his life in Southern Taylor County. Henry was well known in both Lawn and in Tuscola for his service to the older generation in the community. He was often called upon do various house and yard chores for them. He was well liked by all and was always in a good mood and ready to greet you with a smile.
Henry did not miss a single Dallas Cowboy's football game and was a staunch fan. After a loss he would often promise to not watch them the next Sunday, but when it came time he could be found in front of the television ready for kick off.
He loved his time at the Abilene Adult Day Care Center and he would never miss day to visit his many friends at the center.
Henry is survived by his sister Ozella Fish of Tuscola, niece Eva Dodson of San Angelo, and Nephew Freddie Cosper of Fort Hood, Killen. He has two great nieces and four great nephews.
Henry is preceded in death by his parents and a baby sister Betty May Miller.

FORT MCKAVETT Salya Ann Hicks Swindall of Fort McKavett, formerly of San Angelo, passed away Wednesday, June 15, 2011. She was born on July 18, 1946, to Bradley and Lillian Hicks. She graduated from Jim Ned High School and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Tuscola. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, friend and will be missed by many. She was preceded in death by her father, Bradley; her brother, Tommy; and her beloved son, Jake Wade Swindall. She is survived by her mother, Lillian Hicks Fuqua; son and his wife, Kirk and Kyra Swindall; grandchildren Jake Tyler and Kaylee Brooke Swindall; and her brother and his wife, Ronnie and Jacky Hicks.

Helen Lee Curtis, age 87, passed away Saturday, June 18, 2011, in Hendrick Medical Center. Services will be held at 10:30 AM Monday, June 20, 2011, at the First Baptist Church of Baird, Texas, with Pastor Jimmy Hatcher officiating. Interment will follow in Ross Cemetery Annex. Parker Funeral Home of Baird is in charge of arrangements.
Helen was born in Tuscola, Texas, on November 11, 1923, to Arthur Burleson and Mattie Maschek Burleson. She attended schools in Tuscola and moved to Baird in the late 1930's. Helen and A. V. Curtis married in May of 1940. Over the years she had worked at both Miller's Grocery and Black's Grocery in Baird, as well as being a homemaker. Helen was a member of First Baptist Church of Baird where she had served as the Sunday School Secretary for 35 years. She and A. V. were among the first memberships in Shady Oaks Recreation Association in Baird where she was a member and a Past President of the Ladies Golf Association.
She is survived by her son, Bobby Curtis and his wife Ann; her daughter Beverly Shelton and her husband Ed; and her brother Sonny Burleson, all of Baird, Texas; along with 8 grandchildren, 5 step-grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, 8 great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
The family suggests memorials to the donor's favorite charity in Helen's memory.

Mona Derington, 91, passed away Tuesday, June 14, 2011 at her daughter's house in Tivoli, Texas. Her funeral will be held at 10:00am Thursday June 23, 2011 at Baker Height Church of Christ. Officiating by Bill Basket and Gayle Potter. Directed by Fry~Bartlett Funeral Home, Tuscola. A visitation will be at the funeral home Wednesday June 22, 2011 from 6 to 8.
Monnie (Mona) Marie (Whetsel) Derington was born to R. C. and Mary Etta (Gregory) Whetsel in Alverado, Johnson Co. TX on May 12, 1920. Her family was living in the Mt. Pleasant (View) community when she met the love of her life, Arthur D. Derington. They married Oct. 31, 1937 in Merkel, TX.
They lived in Merkel, Chandler, AZ, and Abilene while raising their family. On retirement, they bought a small acreage at Bradshaw, TX. Here Mona had acres to plant flowers, trees, and a large garden. Later, deciding to travel, they sold the farm, moved to Tuscola and spent time traveling, fishing, and visiting family. They spent their winters in Zapata, TX where it was warm. Many mission trips were taken to Mexico where they helped churches, their preachers, and the people of the villages. They also worked with Cherokee Children's Home. They took children in for the holidays and during the summer.
When illness slowed them down, they moved to Winters, TX. After the death of her husband, she continued to live in Winters, until moving into a retirement home in Abilene. Later she moved into the home of her youngest daughter, and lived in Waco and Tivoli, TX.
Mona was a member of the church of Christ. She felt both Baker Heights' church of Christ and the Winters church of Christ were her home churches.
She loved to cook, sew and fish. A. D. and Mona enjoyed traveling, and were members of the Abilene Wildcat Good Sam's RV Club. They also were part of the State Highway Patrol Special Olympics' Run. They traveled from Lubbock to the Austin area each year, furnishing a resting place in the RV and feeding the patrolmen who were running.
Survivors include: Her children, Larry Derington of Hobbs, NM, Wanda Brewer (Charles) of Winters, Robert Derington (Carla) of San Antonio, and Michelle Lewis (Terry) of Tivoli. There are 8 grandchildren, many great grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Jeannette Hammock (J.W.) of Kalispell, MT and Dorothy Giles (Billy) of Dumas, and a childhood friend, Katie Holman of Longview.
Those preceding her include, her husband, Arthur; her parents; and brothers: Roy, Martin, Richard, Grimes, and Billy Joe Whetsel; sister: Johnnie Marshall.

 Robert Lee "Bob" Brown
Abilene
Bob Brown, 81, of Abilene, passed away early Friday morning, June 17, 2011 at his home in Abilene. Graveside service will be held Sunday afternoon, June 19, 2011 at 2:00 pm at Iberis Cemetery, south of Abilene.
Bob was born on March 18, 1930 in Oklahoma. He was the son of Arthur and Opal Brown. Bob served his country in the Korean War. He worked at Mrs. Bairds Bakery for over 40 years before retiring in 1990. Bob also farmed, ranched and was an avid sports fan.
He married the love of his life Bobby Joyce Brown in November of 1951. Bobby preceded him in death in 2008 after 57 years of marriage. They spent their happiest times following and guiding their four children through life. Later, they enjoyed the same duties with their beloved grandchildren. Bob never missed a game that any of his children, or grandchildren were involved in. His competitive nature came out every time his grandchildren participated in any event.
Through his life Bob enjoyed baseball, hunting and fishing. He passed that love to both of his sons. His daughters were not only his angels, but his best friends. They spent hours with each other on the phone nearly every day, discussing the latest reality show, grandchildren, or both.
Bob is survived by two sons, two daughters, nine grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. His children and their spouses include, Guy and Kathy Brown of Abilene, Art and Lou Ann Brown of Ovalo, Terry and Donald Keith of Abilene, Laurie and Jimmy Spivey of Lampasas. Survivors also included Bob's sister Gypsy Besent of Round Rock and two nieces and a nephew. Bob's treasured grandchildren are Caleb Brown and wife Kristy, Dusty Kinslow and husband Adam, Zackry Brown and wife Tonia, Jerrod Brown and wife Julia, Levi Keith and wife Kim, Amber Keith, Sara Wilfong and husband Tate, Ethan Brown and wife Sara, and Allie Spivey. These grandchildren gave Bob 13 great-grandchildren that were the light of his life in his later years. Great-grandchildren included Bryce, Jordyn, Anna, Blaydon, Dreighton, Hagen, Mia, Augustus, Reese, Jesse, Sam, Miller, and one on the way. His constant companion and pet Mattie will also miss him dearly.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife. Linda graduated from Jim Ned High School in 1962. She married Stanley Boulter on August 18, 1962 in Tuscola, Texas. Linda retired from U.S. Postal Service after serving for 29 years as the Postmaster of Ovalo, Texas.
Linda never missed an activity her children or grandchildren were involved in. Linda always made everyone welcome in her home and her community. She had a gift of hospitality and a heart of gold.
Linda is survived by her husband of 48 years, Stanley Boulter of Ovalo, son Scott Boulter, daughter Lanita Roden, daughter in law Trina Boulter, mother in law Dorothy Boulter, grandchildren: Cortnie & Thomas Carpenter, Janae McCrary, Parker Boulter, Will Roden, Latham Roden & their father Jeff Roden, great grandchildren: Brody, Skylar, & Boston Carpenter, brother Jerry Van Cleave & his wife Jonell, nieces & nephews, Janie & Jay Van Zandt, Mark & Shana Boulter, Karen Morris and many close friends.
Linda was preceded in death by her parents, Hurshel & Virginia Van Cleave and her father in law, Gordon Boulter.

Olan Tally, 97, died Thursday, June 23, 2011, at an Abilene nursing center.
The son of Maude Ethel (Sprouls) and A.B. Tally, Olan was born on April 4, 1914 in Comanche County, Texas. In 1920 he moved to Buffalo Gap where he attended school. He was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II. Olan worked for Taylor County, Precinct 3 as a heavy equipment operator. He had been a resident of Abilene since 2000. He was a Baptist.
Olan was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Ardell Tally in 2001; parents; son, Gerald Dale McCraw; two sisters; five brothers and five great-grandchildren.
Survivors include a son, Gary Kirt McCraw of Abilene; daughter, Jeanne Ann Williams of Humble, Texas; 11 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 27, at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road with Rev. Rodney Watson officiating. Interment will follow in Buffalo Gap Cemetery with Military Honors. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

James Thompson, 83, passed from this life on April 4, 2011 with his boots and work gloves on, while cutting wood at his home. Funeral services will be held at the Lawn Church of Christ at 10:00am Thursday April 7th 2011, officiated by Mike Hardaway and Roy Meyer. Funeral arrangements directed by Fry~Bartlett Funeral Home, Tuscola. A visitation will be held from 6 to 8:00pm Wednesday April 6th, 2011 at the funeral home.
James was born on July 21, 1927 in Potter County, Texas to Roy and Cora Moore Thompson. James moved to Harrah, Oklahoma where he lived until his graduation from high school. After high school graduation James enlisted in the United States Navy toward the end of World War II. He was then discharged in 1946 at the end of the war.
James married Ruby Fay Crew in July 1948, and for the next 62 years they lived around the Abilene area. The last 31 years they lived in Content. During this time James and Ruby raised a family and James worked 50 years in the grocery industry.
James was manager for several grocery stores in the area starting with Thornton's then Super Duper stores. James moved to the wholesale food side when he went to work for Independent Groceries, Wholesale Foods, and retired from C. D. Hartnett.
James enjoyed gardening and loved sharing its bounty with family and friends, but most of all he loved to cut wood, which many considered a rather odd hobby. He deeply loved his wife, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
James was a long time member of the Southside Church of Christ in Abilene and then later became a member of the Lawn Church of Christ. He was a devoted Christian man.
James was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Homer Thompson.
James in survived by his wife Ruby of Content, daughter Sherry Aldridge and husband Lanny of Goldsboro, son Tony Thompson and wife Diane of Denton Valley, one sister Georgie McNabb and husband Dan of Robert Lee, three grandsons Curry Aldridge and wife Shana of Arlington, Ryan Aldridge and wife Liz of Columbus Ohio, and Seth Thompson of Denton Valley, two great granddaughters Reese Aldridge of Arlington and Abigail Aldridge of Columbus Ohio, and one "soon to be" Colton Aldridge in June.
James will be missed by many because he was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and a caring and considerate friend.

Luda Fern Dean Cooke, 76, of Elgin, Texas, passed away February 28, 2011 in an Austin Hospital. Luda was born January 17, 1935 to Lonnie Lee Dean and Lottie Bell Carter in Bradshaw, Texas.
Luda loved for the whole family to get together. She loved taking care of her kids, grandkids and her plants. Her family and friends were her life.
She is preceded in death by her parents; sons Lonnie Daniel Cooke and Ricky Douglas Cooke; brothers Jimmy Dean and Vaden Dean.
Luda is survived by sons Gary Neil Cooke and wife Belinda and James Ronald Cooke; brothers Johnny and Reba Dean of Midland and Buddy Dean of Midland; sisters Norma and Willard Akeman of Rankin, Sue and Ronnie Raper of Lawn and Shirley Hayden of Anchorage, Alaska; 12 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Thursday, March 3, 2022 from 6-8 p.m. at Providence-Jones Family Funeral Home, 604 Hwy 95 N., Elgin. Graveside services will be Friday, March 4, 2011 at 11 a.m. at Pleasant Grove Cemetery.

Dee Langston, 45, of Winters passed away Wednesday, February 16, 2011. She was born September 16, 1965 in Winters and lived in Valley Creek, Grand Prairie, Tuscola, Bradshaw and Hamlin. She returned to Winters in 2008. She graduated from Jim Ned High School in 1985. She was proud to be a Jim Ned Indian. She was an avid fan of the Jim Ned Indians, Dallas Mavericks and Dallas Cowboys.
She is survived by 3 sisters: Margie and Clinton Wheeler of Ovalo, Brenda Kanode of Grand Prairie and Vickie Langston and Richard Branson of Schertz; and 4 brothers: Lowrie "Larry" and Judy Langston of Hamlin, Roger "Buster" and Pam Langston of Ferris, Billy and Sheila Langston of Grand Prairie and Jesse and Sandi Langston of Grand Prairie.
The family will be receiving friends at the Winters Funeral Home on Friday, February 18, 2011 at 4:00 p.m. Graveside services will be held at Pendergrass Cemetery in Sidney, Texas, Saturday, February 19, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. R.C. Jones officiating under the direction of the Winters Funeral Home.
Dee Ella passed away, February 16, 2011 in the afternoon. Funeral arrangements are being made at the Funeral Home in Winters. Burial will probably be in Sydney, Texas. More as it becomes known.
Update on Dee Ella Langston ('85): Please keep Dee Ella and her family in your prayers. Her sister, Margie Wheeler let me know the morning of Feb. 16th that Dee Ella was in the Shannon Hospital in San Angelo and not expected to live much longer. The doctors gave her 24-48 hours. She had Tuberous Sclerosis all of her life but it completely took to her lungs and kidneys.
Tuberous sclerosis or tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a rare, multi-system genetic disease that causes non-malignant tumors to grow in the brain and on other vital organs such as the kidneys, heart, eyes, lungs, and skin. A combination of symptoms may include seizures, developmental delay, behavioral problems, skin abnormalities, lung and kidney disease.

Aubrey L. "Sonny" Carlton, 67, of Ovalo, passed away on Saturday February 5, 2011 at his son's home in Krugerville. He was born on April 21, 1943 in Friona to Aubrey L. and Elmina (Crow) Carlton Sr.. He married Saundra Gray Lappe on March 4, 2005 in Liberty Hill. Sonny was a retired truck driver and a veteran of the U.S. Navy.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, February 11, 2011 at 2PM at the Piersall-Benton Funeral Home in Abilene, Rev. Chris Walden will officiate. Visitation will be held at 1PM prior to the service at the funeral home.
Sonny is survived by his wife Saundra Lappe of Ovalo; seven sons, Terry Carlton and wife LeeAnn of Krugerville, Tracy Carlton and wife Jenny of Corinth, Gene Lappe and wife Leslie of Abilene, Shannon Jones and wife Annie of San Angelo, Douglas Lappe and wife Laura of Lubbock, Stephen Jones of Beaumont and Kurtis Lappe of Lubbock; and two daughters, Sharon Wright of Ovalo and Kim Bustos and husband Victor of San Marcos. Sonny is also survived by four brothers: Jerry Carlton and wife Liz of Clovis, NM, Walter Carlton and wife Renda of Weatherford, Jessie Carlton and wife Sandi of Round Rock, and David Carlton and wife Patti of Plano; along with three sisters, Margie Rexrode and husband Joe of Lockney, Donnette Sabins and husband Rocky and Debbie Carlton all of Plainview. He is also survived by two aunts; Sue Inman and Zula Carlton and 17 Grandchildren and 5 Great-Grandchildren.
Sonny was a member of the Abilene VFW Motorcycle Group and an honorary member of the Abilene American Legion Riders Group.

The following was written by Keva Hancock.
Keva Lou Hays Holley Hancock was born in Borden County March 24, 1927, to C. B. (Blair) and Gladdie (Hardegree) Hays. She attended schools at O'Donnell and Ballinger, TX, then continued with college courses for a number of years while working full-time. In 1946 she married Eldon Holley of Ballinger, TX. For 17 years, she was employed by churches as a secretary, youth director, or educational director in Childress, Wellington, and Ballinger, TX. During the late 1950s, she received Woman of the Year award for her work with youth in the community and also was granted a life-time membership in the Methodist WSCS organization.
After moving to Abilene, TX in 1965, she began working for Hardin-Simmons University and soon became Director of Student Financial Aid. In this position, she was a member of the state, regional, and national associations of Student Financial Aid Directors. After retiring from HSU, she became a member of the Fellowship of Former Faculty and Staff of Hardin-Simmons. Mrs. Hancock was also a member of the Abilene Woman's Club for 20 years, the Gideon's Auxiliary, the 33 Study Club, the Self-Culture Club, the Highland Garden Club, and three dinner clubs. She served for several years as a Texas Ombudsman.
In 1966, two HSU students introduced Keva to their dad, Jack Hancock of Tuscola, TX. She quickly discovered Mr. Hancock was even greater than his daughters had said, for he was a Christian gentleman and a good man. They were married on January 6, 1967 and were blessed with 44 wonderful years together. For many years the Hancocks lived on a farm/ranch near Tuscola. Her favorite task on the ranch was going to the cattle auctions and to buy calves to put in the feed lots or on their ranch. The Hancocks later lived in Abilene, Sweetwater, Forsan, and Big Spring, TX. While in Abilene they traveled to Brazil with a group from Abilene First Baptist Church on a fact-finding mission trip. Mrs. Hancock went as an educational missionary and Mr. Hancock as an agricultural missionary. While living in Sweetwater, the Hancocks resided at Camp Booth Oaks, working with the West Texas Girl Scouts. Mrs. Hancock's favorite part of this was the summer resident camps for the girls. The Hancocks received the Thanks Badge, the highest award given, for their work at Camp Booth Oaks. Mrs. Hancock's husband, children, grandchildren, and grandchildren meant so much to her, as did her siblings and their families. She loved family gatherings and cooking for everyone. Her grandchildren loved spending time with their Mema and Poppa.
In her latter years, she was a member of the Forsan Baptist Church where she was a member of the Dorcas Sunday Class and served on the Benevolence Committee. She taught Sunday School classes for 50 years in the churches she attended and was a dedicated prayer warrior. She was also an avid reader before losing her eye-sight. The Hancocks traveled world-wide, visiting Africa, Greece, South America, Mexico, Canada, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Japan, China, Israel, Egypt, Switzerland, and 42 of the 50 United States.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Bill and Dr. John Hays, sister Peggy Hays Robertson, and son-in-law Tom Henry.
Surviving her are husband Jack Hancock; daughters Dena Ivie and husband Charles of Tatum, NM; Joy Vazquez and husband Ernesto of Laredo, TX; and Jackie Henry of Big Spring, TX; brother Gordon Hays and wife Lenell of Ballinger, TX; sister-in-law Dorothy Hays of Ballinger, TX; brother-in-law Dr. Eugene Robertson of Arlington, TX. Also surviving are six grandchildren and nine great-children: Tim Griffin, wife Dina and their children Bailey, Emma, and Seaver Hancock Griffin of Abilene, TX; Kim Turner, husband Chris and their sons Jordan and Hunter Jack Turner of Topeka, KS; Sam Griffin, wife Stacy and their daughter Isabel Griffin of Levelland, TX; Mandi Lewis, husband Eric and their son Hadley of Sherman, TX; Carlos Vazquez of Laredo, TX and his sons Carlos and Andres of Spain; and John Paul Vazquez of Sacramento, CA; also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews who were all very special to her.

Please pray for the Featherston family during this time of loss. Kenneth ('84) Roberson's wife Teri, has lost her grandmother. Jo was also a teacher at Lawn.
Jo was born August 7, 1917 to early Coleman County pioneers, Will and Bettie Wright Mathews on the Mathews Ranch at Atoka. She graduated from Novice High School and attended McMurry College for two years, majoring in art. On November 18, 1937 she married Baxter (Sonny) Featherston, also a Novice graduate, and a student at Texas A & M. They made their home on the Mathews farm at Goldsboro. Jo taught school and coached girls basketball at Lawn, and Sonny worked for the Texas Co., (now Texaco). In 1948 the family moved to Abilene and Sonny stared Featherston Well Service. Jo entered into retail sales at downtown department stores, Margas, Waddingtons, Minters and Grissoms. During this time she also opened Jo's Porcelain Art Studio where she taught the art of porcelain doll draping and her good friend Gladys Pressley taught China Painting.
Following the untimely death of her husband in 1984, she took over the operation of the Well Service Company and also continued the restoration and the running of the Homeplace Ranch in Novice, which the couple had assumed ownership of after the deaths of Sonny's parents. During this time Jo traveled extensively in the United States and Europe. She was actively engaged in ranching well into her eighties, when her son David retired from British Petroleum in Alaska and took over the day to day operations of the ranch.
She was a member of art several guilds, The Texas Cattlemen's Association and the Cowbelles. Jo was a tireless volunteer for the Salvation Army and a supporter of many charitable organizations.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three brothers, Sam, Walter and Carl Mathews, one sister Della West, and her sons-in-law, Mike Miller and Terry J. Northcutt.
Jo is survived by two daughters, Sara Goldsmith and husband Warren, and Carolyn Northcutt, both of Abilene; her son, David Featherston and wife Pat, of the Homeplace Ranch in Novice; six grandchildren, Cindy Hood and husband Howard of Spring, Randall Miller of Abilene, Teri Ann Roberson and husband Kenneth of Tuscola, Clay Northcutt of Abilene, D'Shay McLean of Boise, Idaho and Shawn Gaskins of Cincinnati, Ohio; eleven great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the administration and staff at Windcrest Alzheimer's Care Center and Hendrick Hospice for their loving and compassionate care of their mother.

Pamila Haynes Baker ('70) sent me this information regarding her husband Billy Paul Baker, Jr. ('68). Please be thinking of and praying for this family during their time of loss.
Billy Paul Baker, Jr, 61, passed away peacefully in his home on Thursday, November 4, 2010.
Services will be held at the First Baptist Church in Glen Rose at 10:00am on Monday, November 8th. His burial will follow at 3:00pm at Oplin Cemetery in Oplin, Tx. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Billy was born in Batesville, Arkansas on July 6, 1949.
He is remembered for an exceptionally meritorious career with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department as the Park Superintendent at Dinosaur Valley State Park in Glen Rose. This service of over 37 years has included respected roles in law-enforcement, search and rescue, and numerous community organizations. His dedication to the citizens of Glen Rose and the State of Texas was second only to his love for his wife and family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Aileen Dickson and Billy Baker Sr., and his sister, Martha Smith, and brother, Michael Welch.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Pam Baker of Glen Rose, his son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Credence Baker of Stephenville, his sister and brother-in-law, Debra and Pete Higgins of Dublin, and his sister-in-law, Paula Baugus of Abilene.

Like the dinosaurs that once roamed around Glen Rose, Billy Paul Baker Jr. left some big footprints behind.
The longtime park superintendent of Dinosaur Valley State Park passed away peacefully in his home last Thursday after a long illness. He was 61.

A.D. was born November 14, 1916 in Ovalo, TX to Henry & Maggie Copeland. He married Opal Zimmerlee in 1936 in Lawn, TX. They had one son Richard Copeland & 1 daughter Janice Kite. A.D. & Opal moved to Sweetwater in 1943. A.D. worked as a mechanic @ the Dodge Dealership from 1943 to 1971. A.D. won numerous awards while at the Dodge Dealership. After his employment there, he was owner of the Texaco Service Station on Lamar from 1971 to 1979. He then opened a garage on Broadway Street for 3 yrs. After his retirement, he continued to work on cars until age 80. He & Opal owned a lake lot in Brownwood for several years where all the family came, made memories, and enjoyed riding go-carts, fishing, swimming and camping. A.D. & Opal moved to Abilene in 2001.
Preceding A.D. in death was his wife Opal, who passed away earlier this year in March; his parents, 4 brothers and 4 sisters, his daughter Janice Kite, and one great-grandson, Trevor Bond Copeland.
Survivors include one son, Richard Copeland and wife Janice; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren and numerous other family members and friends.
The family would like to thank Hendrick Hospice for all their kindness and compassion.

Funeral services for Merbeth "Mary" Elizabeth Hallford, age 87, of Bangs will be held at 11:00 am Tuesday December 28, 2010 at the Davis Morris Funeral Home Chapel, interment to follow at 2:00 p.m. in Bradshaw Cemetery in Taylor County under the direction of Davis Morris Funeral Home of Brownwood. Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Monday evening at the funeral home. Mrs. Hallford passed away December 24, 2010 in Brownwood.
Mary was born February 16, 1923 in Bradshaw, Texas to Landon Hickland Turnbow and Clara LaVada (Bagwell) Turnbow. She married Jasper Harold Hallford on November 27, 1946 in Odessa,Tx and she was a member of the Bangs First Baptist Church.
She is survived by her children, Elizabeth Ann Earles of Bangs, Robert Perry Hallford and wife Cindy of Bangs, Freddie Hallford of Bangs, and Jimmy Hallford and wife Melanie of Bangs; grandchildren, Elizabeth Haynes and fiance Eldon Jones of Merkel Tx, Johnny Hallford and wife Lisa of Wheelock Tx, Clinton and Michelle Hallford of Dora, AL, and Jacob Hallford of Bangs; great grandchildren, Jaylon, Haley, Payton, and Layne Hallford; Kristyn and Kacie Haynes; and Kaitlyn and Miranda Mcculley; brothers, Harven Turnbow of Midland,Jim Turnbow of Hereford, Harold Turnbow of San Antonio, and Wayne Turnbow of Abilene; Sisters, Faye Rendon of Waco, Margie Berry of Scott City KS, Betty Morris of Andrews TX, Laverne Nethercutt of Odessa, and Claradean Walsh of Abilene.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harold Hallford; a brother, Earl Andrew Turnbow; and a sister, Ann Lee Roberts.

The Cleveland Browns have made a move that will warm up the hearts of Cleveland, which has been dealing with temperatures in the teens along with on and off blizzard-like conditions the past week-plus.
Browns head coach Eric Mangini has named rookie quarterback sensation, Colt McCoy, the starter for the remainder of the season.
President Mike Holmgren has sent a few quotes out to the media the past few weeks, since McCoy went down with a high ankle sprain, saying that he really hoped McCoy would heal quickly in order to see how the young quarterback faces the cold, wind and snow in Cleveland this time of the year.
McCoy does not possess a Brett Favre-like cannon for an arm, but what is similar to Favre is the fact they both grew up in the South playing in warm weather before landing on a cold weather NFL team to start their professional careers.
Favre was able to rocket the ball through the cold Green Bay winters for the Packers, but McCoy has the accuracy to his advantage and a big, bruising running back behind him who is built to run on cold weather in Peyton Hillis.
With many Browns fans still on the fence about McCoy and if he really is the future of the franchise, those are the same fans who are questioning McCoy's ability to throw the ball in the Cleveland weather.
Those fans need to take a step back in time and look at two previous Browns quarterbacks who did not have the biggest arms in the NFL during their respective times, but they both had the ability to be accurate enough to manage in bad weather

Those quarterbacks are Brian Sipe and Bernie Kosar.
In 10 seasons with the Browns, Sipe managed a 56.5 completion percentage which may not be a jaw-dropping percentage, but Sipe did managed to be the NFL MVP in 1980.
In his nine seasons with Cleveland, Kosar managed a 58.8 completion percentage in terrible weather and he took the Browns to two AFC Championship games.
Both quarterbacks were not gunslingers the likes of a Favre, but the point is that their arm strength didn't matter because they were highly intelligent quarterbacks who successfully played in Cleveland weather.
McCoy brings with him a moxie that has not been seen behind center since the days of Kosar and he too is highly intelligent and has already shown that he can read NFL defenses and make adjustments to put the Browns in a position to move the ball.
This will not change in cold weather and McCoy will get Browns fans excited as the 2010 season closes out since he will be starting against all three AFC North division rivals.
Browns fans will see that McCoy could very well be the next incarnate of Sipe or Kosar or whoever you want to compare him to, but what is most important is that he has the winning attitude and that is something that is tough to find in a fresh rookie straight out of college.

Patricia Ann Burleson, 52, of Abilene passed away Saturday, December 11, 2010 at her home. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 14, 2010 at Hillcrest Church of Christ. Ray Ferguson will officiate. Burial will follow in the McBee Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday, December 13, 2010 from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road.
Patricia was born July 22, 1958 in Hopewell, Virginia to Andrew Baugus and Juanita (Benson) Baugus. She married Don Burleson in Las Vegas, Nevada. Abilene has been Patricia's home for the past 42 years. She worked for Condley and Company as their receptionist. Patricia was a Baptist.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister Wanda Baugus, one brother Andy Baugus, and one step-son Daryl Burleson. Patricia is survived by her husband, Don Burleson of Abilene; three sons, John David Vaughn and wife Katrina of Boys Ranch, TX, Marty Burleson and wife Susie, Boyd Burleson and wife Michelle, and one daughter, Heather Dickson and husband Jason, all of Abilene. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Kade, Kaylee and Karson Dickson, Justin, Martin, Jared and Kelsie Burleson; five brothers, Bobby, Bruce, Ronald, James and Michael Baugus; one sister, Carolyn Baugus; as well as several nieces and nephews and many friends and loved ones.
Martin Burleson, Justin Burleson, Brian Young, Jesse Ochoa, Jarrod Ochoa and Paul Valdez will serve as pallbearers.

The question has been asked "Why are there are so many graduating classes listed but only the classes of 1983, 1984, 1985 and 1986 have names listed?"
My focus at present is on the combined class reunion coming up in June. After June, a much larger project will begin and that is to compile all the graduating classes of Jim Ned Indians in one location. This web site is strictly for Jim Ned Alumni and will not have the clutter of other schools or ads wanting something from you. This site is free to you, the Jim Ned Alumni. That way we can communicate and stay in touch with those that we have lost contact with or those we wish to connect with again, or to simply enjoy seeing how our families have grown and knowing what we may have in common with now than when we were growing up together. Believe me, it could surprise you as to how much you may have in common now. Your messages sent to each other are completely private and will stay that way. We have had a lot of interest from other Alumni about wanting to visit with our classes when we have our 25th Reunion. We have decided that the best way to do this would be to open up the Evening Dance to Jim Ned Alumni and Faculty. There will be no food or refreshments served for the Evening Dance so if you want anything to munch on or drink, you will need to bring your own.

50-Year Class Reunion was a great success - over 75 attended from the classes of 1958, 1959, 1960 and a few from 1961. Several of these classmates had not seen each other since they graduated and were very glad they attended. Teachers that attended were Oran Egger and Frank Hibler. I got there a little late so I am not sure at the moment what the activities were before lunch but before the end of the Reunion there was a time of sharing. Stories that went on for over an hour. Remembering the good old days, appologies of less than kind treatment during school, kudos to those putting the reunion together and some very special speeches from Coach Kibler and Mr. Egger and a few others that brought tears to my eyes. This is family, a common bond, no matter how many years shared or how many miles apart.
